As someone who used to be in a local school up until a few months into Secondary 1 aka Grade 7, i can agree with everything you said and can confirm how shitty our workload is. Not to mention the way they teach stuff ruins everything and learning in general uninteresting. When I had to transfer to a school following an American system (which I'm currently still at), it was only then I realised how local school didn't prepare me for the real world since everything from norms, rules to even behavior was so different.
As a former HK school student I can tell you that although it is very stressful, I myself could barely keep up, getting 60-70% sometimes in the 50s (60% and above for pass on test), they really drilled what they taught me into their brains. Even five or four years from now I can still remember what they taught me. After I move to Western school I found out their level of learning was 2 or 3 years behind me, which really allowed me to relax and be very confident about my tests compared to my Australian counterparts in my class, something that would not have happened if I had not been hardened by the years of hard work at HK schools People in my school constantly compete to see who scores the highest marks on tests and they would be automatically labelled as “smart”, also you really wanted to study because the teachers were terrifying when you were on the receiving end of their screams. Of course they were not actually angry at you but they wanted to toughen you up and make a man out of you. It was this mix of competition and fear in the air that really made the students remember what they were taught very effectively. I can also connect with you about the strict school uniform rules, no hats of unnecessary accessories, also for example boys had to tuck their shirt into their pants which was really annoying and uncomfortable on a hot and humid day. One last thing, I absolutely agree, Chinese was the worst subject for me. I regularly failed, even getting 0% sometimes and I was the laughing stock of the class when it came to Chinese even though I was a native Chinese speaker. I thought getting held back after school by my Chinese teacher was bad enough but now I am actually grateful for it and regret not wanting to learn because she held me back after school to teach me herself and she went easy on me and said if I learnt a few words every day I would eventually pass the test, getting slightly higher marks on each test, I guess she felt bad for me. Also idk why I wanna mention this but I think I was the only person In the entire school with a foreign name (Charles)
Thank you for sharing your experience Charles!! Seriously studying aboard and in hk are two different worlds😭😭 For some reasons I didn’t get brainwashed as much and I didn’t care much about studying during middle school and high school (It’s not a good mindset to have either tbh). That being said I still feel like sh*t sometimes seeing all my peers have their future planned ahead and everything🥲
Hi, I find myself in a similar position, I'm horrible in Chinese, but I want to ask, is it possible to get into a uni overseas with good grades, but lacking in only Chinese? Thx
I wholeheartedly agree with you .Im a student in Hong Kong and I use to have 0 expectations for my life .Cuz of peer pressure and high expectations from parents . The Hk Society has embedded a thought In our heads is to get in uni or your trash . Students are so f*ing competitive here . I suck in Chinese .I’ve never passed a Chinese test or exam in my life( I wasn’t born in Hk so my mother tongue isn’t Chinese ). But I’ve tried my best and put my heart and soul on getting a good mark so that I could feel better about myself. Not having to be the worst at class and being look down at by others . That feeling is really degrading . I still suck at it to this day . Going to tutoring class doesn’t help either. It just puts more weight on your shoulders. I don’t think any student should go through what Hk student go through especially for younger kids. Going to school really limits what you wanna do. You can’t really find any aspirations of yourself. It’s hard to live in a place where people don’t even see hope especially now.
I suck at Chinese too and honestly a lot of what they taught at school is not even useful (e.g. classical Chinese), as long as I can speak and write properly. But either way I hope you will still stay hopeful for the future because it’s not defined by your academic performance, and uni certainly isn’t everything. Wish you a great 2022 ahead!!
Hi Cassandra! Is it possible to get into college outside of HK even without passing Chinese in DSE? But with good grades on other subjects and lots of extra curricula activities. Thx. 🙏
The DSE is meant for local Hong Kong Universities. I’ve only studied in a local school up until Secondary one (Grade 7) and I’m still in high school so I’m not that sure about the local exam but I don’t think taking the DSE alone would be enough to get into a college/ university outside of Hong Kong. Fortunately, many local schools now offer IB as an alternative. Or you can go to an international school following a western system instead.
I agree with you! Hk education are sucks and garbage. That will just ruin people's wellbeing especially the way how the fucking band 1 works. Teacher are very harsh there and scolding over small things like a little mistake in writing etc. And lots of exams and test and it will just ruin your funhood. And not getting complete As can be unacceptable there. So that's why me as a hk person moved out of hk.
am here to stay, i just turned on my bell for for videos.
That’s so sweet thank you🥺❤️

thank you so much for sharing this, but honestly I think 60-70% is not bad at all and pretty good tbh! I get a similar range of scores

As aHong Kong secondary school student everything she said is 100% percent true being a student here is not light work
