    Yes, they're def beautiful, but my XT (I use 165mm cranks) are way cheaper and on par for weight if a full alloy chainring is used ( i doubt my XT chainring will wear out any time soon for me to get one though.) But thanks for showing us something different from the usual fare.

    Wanted the 5Dev raw cranks the moment I saw them. Reminded me of all of the custom cranks that were available in the 90's but better made. I can't afford them and would rather spend the money on some carbon hoops/onyx hubs but definitely in the want category and just can't justify the price.

    Great Video, Last year I bought a pair of the black 5Dev cranks (165mm) A smaller chain ring (two teeth smaller) to offset the shorter cranks in order to maintain similar power output in the same gear, (previous cranks 170mm) and some one up aluminum pedals, so I didn’t have to adjust my saddle 5mm higher. The pedals being close to 5mm thinner then the DMR vaults. Unfortunately I didn’t get around to installing the new parts until the winter season so I can’t comment if I notice any difference. Finally thanks for taking the time sharing your knowledge and experience with new products. Almost forgot I was also a little concerned with stack height of the bars so hopefully with the changes I made I will notice no difference as that was my goal when I went down the rabbit hole of shorter cranks.

    i prefer shimano cranks because you can install them with an allen key... the 54 nm for the sram cranks requires a breaker bar to get off

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 Год назад

      They don't require a break tbar, you don't need to use crazy high torque, 40 NM is fine, but a big hex key should loosen it, if its stuck you can do it by stepping on the key and having one foot on the other crank, or pedal, but if you have a rubber mat you can do it with a frame only, by doing the same. But not tried it on Sram but on Raceface. I add a bit of Loctite 243 to keep them extra secure for longer, but don't overdo it. 40nm is max my arms can do. I used the 8mm hex key from Parktool HXS-1.2 It's 20cm from centew of short end to tip.

    If I had the money to buy any cranks I wanted, no question, Cane Creek E-Wings.
    Hope the 5 Devs are forged/ cold forged.
    AC Components made some very similar cranks back in the late 80's. Very similar geometry shapes cnc milled into the surface, not all the way through.
    I still have a set. They are a warranty replacements for a set that snapped clean in half...after hitting a pretty moderate (by today's standards) 30 mph tree stump driveway gap jump. Amazingly I didn't crash as I watched half my crank arm and pedal tumbling down the sidewalk in front of me.
    Guess my point was....they were intricately machined from CAST billet and Hella weak.
    And precisely why everything nowadays is cold forged.

    I pedal on these, reason for me was mainly two factors. Made in USA, I just wanted to support something local (and I LIVE in San Diego) as one reason. The other reason is because it was a higher quality crank product that I could find that offered 160mm length. Took them to Mammoth last year and after many months riding on them, I still love them. I would not pay so much money for them if I didn't have the budget for the upgrade though. So unless 160mm length cranks are over flowing out on the market, this is a nice item to have. I own the black and they haven't peeled on me yet, but I haven't smashed them on to rocks even after a couple falls. Or maybe they have hit the ground a couple times, but not hard enough to do any damage that I can see. Recommended if you have the budget!

      Define “looks weak”. It’s a trellis design and combining triangles has held up bridges that we drive on. Ducati has used trellis style rear subframes on their motorcycles for decades, race cars use trellis in chassis and roll cage protection, the list goes on.
      I understand the lack of visual heft makes it appear less substantial, but there’s a good chance that pound-for-pound this crank arm is on par with a lot of other solid cast or milled products. 👍🏽

These cranks actually seems easier to clean than Raceface cranks, as the dirt comes off in both directions. And seems like this design reduces alot of weight while keeping it stiff enough, but not tried them. But an added benefit of these cranks is being able to out a bicycle lock trough it.
