      Angering Bel Iblis was dumb. Angering him by insisting on sticking to a plan based on old intel was idiotic. For those who don't know in the Legends continuity Garm bel Iblis, Mon Mothma, and Bail Organa were the big three leaders of the early Rebel Alliance which was composed initially of three resistance groups each led by one of them.
      Each had areas they were stronger in and bel Iblis was the tactical and strategic expert of the trio.
      At some point before Alderaan was destroyed Bail Organa and Mon Mothma drew up a plan to hit an Imperial base without discussing it with bel Iblis but decided to shelve it for a while. Months after the Battle of Yavin Mon Mothma dug out the plans for the attack and decided to run with it. bel Iblis has information indicating the base is much stronger Mon Mothma thinks and Mothma basically says "Your information doesn't matter we're sticking to the plan."
      bel Iblis refuses to send his troops on what he views as a suicide mission so Mothma tells him the Alliance doesn't need him anymore. He and his loyalist leave to form their own rebel movement, and bel Iblis comes to believe Mon Mothma is planning to defeat Palpatine then to declare herself Empress though he eventually excepts that was a mistake on his part.

      (Some Legends Thrawn novel trilogy spoilers ahead)
      Garm realizes he misunderstood her motivations. He's visiting the planet when Coruscant was besieged by Thrawn (Why I don't recall and my copy of The Last Command is MIA.) so she asks him to take command of the defense and he's commissioned as a general in the New Republic military.
      He apparently exists in canon, and was allied with Bail and Mon Mothma when they began to fear Palpatine's intentions during the Clone Wars but hasn't been mentioned beyond that. He's my favorite Legends character so I would like him to get more attention in canon if its a writer that won't set out to ignore everything established about him in Legends.

    #AskEck On this topic of rebel worlds I have a lot of curiosity about Lothal, in the canon. They basically were able to defeat the empire and remain free during the entire galactic civil war, but what were they doing meanwhile? Manufacturing for the alliance? Just taking care of their business? Nothing? Is one of the things I would like to see explained in canon.

    • @AshanBhatoa
      @AshanBhatoa 9 месяцев назад +16

      Yeah, it's completely undefined within the canonical continuity. I like to personally rationalise that the Galactic Empire engaging the Alliance within open-war, only a few months or weeks after the Battle of Lothal would have diverged their attention from potentially retaking the planet. Lothal is actually far flung, according to essentially all canonical star maps and star charts. It must've been quite a substantial logistical effort to maintain supply lines and support to that region of space. That in tandem with the aforementioned would perhaps ensure a precarious safe space for Lothal.

    I've always wondered if Operation Domino was a reference to the RTS games (like Galaxy At War), given how the old policy used to be "if it's a Star Wars product, it's canon until proven otherwise". 1. If the Imperial Senate was still around by Endor, do you think they could have chosen a new Emperor and avoid the complete fracture of the Empire, least to the same degree? I know that by Yavin the Senate was just a rubber stap, but it is something I have always wondered about.
    2. What are your thoughts on Ederlathh Pallopides, the supposed grand neice of Palpatine? Shes and obscure character in legends which I find interesting, expecially since there was an attempt to make her Empress, and also of course the lore conflict since Palpatine killed on his siblings and his parents.

    Then you get stuff in canon (like the Mid Rim Offensive from the Star Wars Twilight Company novel) that seem to be not quite the same. The Rebels advance along the Mid Rim until they outrun their supply lines, then begin a fighting withdraw that seems to end with it's falling to guerilla warfare sometime before Hoth. Then the Rebellion is scattered after Hoth and the Empire is hunting down their fleets and there's barely any level of coordination until after Endor.
    The Mid Rim Offensive at least seems like it ended in a controlled fashion rather than a collapse. But (likely) in universe it gained ground in isolated areas until the Empire threw together enough forces to drive the Alliance back, whereupon they gave up most of the territory they took.

      We know the Venator was developed some time after the war began. This is clear from the 2D micro series which shows Acclimator-class ships acting as carriers in the first months of the war. It is also clear from who built it. Almost all the early GAR craft were built by the company Rothana Heavy Engineering which was the skunkworks division of Kuat Drive Yards. The Venator was built by KDY itself who took all the credit for the products Rothana because they were the parent company and all that. Before the Venator entered service, the main capital ships were smaller models such as the Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser which were built on Russan-era treaty restrictions and the largest ships they had were the Mandator-class a star dreadnought but a lumbering and poorly armed for their size because of the treaties I mention. The Venator was pretty much one of the first ships built once the Russan Refrormations were thrown out of the window.

      @@jcsmith333 one thing that always bugged me about rebels was the lack of merchant raiders and disguised carriers.
      given the rebellions size... "small" carriers with a capacity of 6-18 ships would have been prefect. different cells operating a single ship that looked like a merchent ship. say a GR-75 modified to carry 6 x-wings. operating as a mobile supply base... jumping "near" an imperial target... the fighters then launching and only having to do a short jump, engage, jump back and repair and rearm... saving the pilots from having to spend days in the cockpit for each mission.
      add to that again, medium freighters with hiden guns and/or weapons. Again picture a GR-75, how many cargo pods are open on its front... or belly... now picture each of those carrying a set of missiles and torpedoes. as an imperial ship even a star destroyer, approaches, the GR-75 opens its cargo bays and puts out dozens or even 100's of torpedoes on the star destroy then jumps out. this would quickly overwhelm the shields of even a star destroyer... and likely do serious damage across the ship.
      while it might not be a "kill" if you can keep forcing star destroyeres into drydock for months, to get repaired... you are going to quickly demoralize crew... have captains blamed... and undermine chains of command.

      @@jenniferstewarts4851 Yeah, there's a lot of references to hit and fade tactics in SW (not sure if EU or current content), and I think the rebels would have been inventive enough to use what they had to benefit from the element of surprise.
      I like the fraying at the edges strategy and the issue to do with morale affecting the Imperials.
      Again it echoes the American War in Vietnam, where the overwhelming superiority of the US military wasn't able to always be used effectively because the Vietnamese would often just disappear.
      This had a demoralising effect and maybe also led to bad decision-making and retribution against civilians, which would play into the Vietnamese hands

    • @jenniferstewarts4851
      @jenniferstewarts4851 9 месяцев назад

      @@jcsmith333 During ww1 and ww2, there was something called "Merchant raiders". These were civilian ships armed with hidden weapons.
      these ships started life as merchant ships often refrigerator ships. They were then armed with hidden weapons. 6 inch and even 8 inch guns disguised as shipping crates that would "fall open" when an enemy ship got close enough.
      many carried mines and acted as mine layers deploying mines from covert rails. and in some cases they even carried underwater torpedo tubes. mounted much like a submarines in the bow and stern, then maybe 1 or 2 launchers per side... they could wait for an enemy warship to pull close for an inspection then hit it with torps often at point blank ranges. IN in WW1 and even early ww2, 2 torps were a major threat to even battlecruisers and some battleships.
      the japanese also operated the I-400 class of subs... submersible aircraft carriers designed for covert operations. Able to surface and lauch aircraft against targets, recover them then dive and move away...
      while we see small fighter scale freighters used as fighters and attack we never really see larger ships used in this roll...
      Heck again, picture a GR-75 dumping 20-30 ion torpedo's into a star destroyer, then with its shields down guns offline, opening up with 100-200 concussion missiles across the hull targetting the big turrets, bridge, shield generators, sensors, and once fired turning and jumping out...

    This operation sounds like something you should do after the Empire blew up -it's reputation- Alderan and lost the weapon to do it. I imagine a lot of not only systems but the very Imperial units revolting en masse. But that would be a bloody and uncontrollable revolution.
    On the other hand, rebel medical frigates are supposedly constructed by the Empire, and it would be really interesting if they were run by ex-Imperials. Stormtroopers with rebel camo paintjobs are not a thing, but they really should be.

      Nah Stormtroopers are too indoctrinated to be turned. The Ex-Imperials that joined the Rebellion en masse after Alderaan were mostly generationals who served in the Clone Wars and thought of the Empire as a successor to the Republic.

      No it was an actual government. The civil side of the Alliance was also headed by Mon Mothma and you had different ministries handling different duties that often worked with other Alliance branches (For example the Ministry of Education worked with Alliance Intelligence to expose Imperial atrocities) the government positions of the cabinet changed often as it was held by the member worlds of Alliance who made the most sacrifices at the moment (except for Alderaan as Leia didn’t want to be moved out of active duty).

      They did in fact establish a full government, at least in Legends. Ifk wtf the New Republic is supposed to be doing in Disney lore, but in the old Legends lore they became the New Republic as well.
      The clue is in the name, I guess. "Rebel Alliance to Restore the Republic"
      But yeah, they essentially just take over the Imperial government, with Mon Mothma leading this laying of in-roads into government as well as other Rebel-allied political figures. They also had to restore the Republic Senate entirely anyways as Palpatine had disbanded it when it was still the Imperial Senate.
      Many of the miltary leaders in the Legends NR were just experienced Rebel fighters and commaders, obviously. Essentially they just kept upgrading Rebel technology like the Mon Cala cruisers and X-Wings for a while, sometimes making a new model like the K-Wing.

Now, obviously, the game has its controversies and the amount of lore is less currently than other sci-fi universes, however its still a pretty well fleshed out world and I was curious if you ever considered making a video or two talking about it? You may have already done that or explained why you don't want to, but I didn't see the videos on that as I am an infrequent viewer of your channel and don't see everything you post. I really like this; it shows mistakes and evolution in the military campaign.
    In theory, Dominos could've worked and wasn't terribly too stupid, just early. The galaxy at large, from the Republic to the Empire Eras is more like a coalition. Most planets have their own military forces and navy (as seen with Naboo and Geonosis), and prior to the Clone Army there was no unifying military force. Any military action would require bureaucratically gathering token forces from Senate members. So when the Grand Army came about, the Clone Wars gave the Republic the resources and tools to jumpstart it's own enforcement core.
    We know the Empire only had so many Star Destroyers and Stormtroopers; but while they weren't heavily involved on every planet everywhere, they were plenty large enough to go after a number of worlds, even simultaneously. And if the rebelling planets weren't unified, they could be systematically crushed easily (which apparently is what happened).

    It certainly makes sense the early Rebellion made some major mistakes. After coming out of the Clone Wars, the leaders were used to being on the side with overwhelming firepower. It was a very different war. It took making mistakes to realize guerrilla tactics were the only way to fight the Empire with any hope for success.

Because it would have made the republic fleet more balanced, and you wouldn't have to change much in terms of the slipways/shipyard, retrain the workforce, or development time.

      They didn’t have anyone to sign a non-aggression pact. The Separatist holdouts were small cells with no central command structure like the Alliance had. Some former Separatist did join the Alliance but they had to renounce their former allegiance to the CIS and the war crimes it committed.

    #AskEck - How did the Empire not know that leaders like Leia, Mon Mothma and Garm Bel Iblis were opposing them? And if they did, why didnt they just fully occupy/assault those planets?
    The rebels were slippery and hard to catch, but they were mobile and fast. Planets and the millions of people on them aren't. I find it hard to believe the Empire wouldn't immediately bring down the hammer on them. On Mon Cala, the oceans and durability of Mon Calamari ships and planets were good at outlasting orbital assaults, but even a powerful planetary shield on a core world like Alderaan wouldn't be able to outlast several months of bombardment from a fleet of Star Destroyers. That's also not mentioning the possibilities of blockades, special forces infiltrating the shield, or a number of other methods to bypass these shields.
    I can't imagine that the Empire would be aware of a planet supporting the rebels and letting them get away with it.

    • @emberfist8347
      @emberfist8347 9 месяцев назад

      Leia was able to get away with it because her father and her couched their critiques of the Empire as loyalists basically being the brutally honest types and Leia was too popular from her legitimate diplomatic aid missions to be on a hit list the closest they got was the Force Unleashed when they had to taken as an “observer” the Imperial occupation force on Kashyyyk to keep her father in line “it would be a shame if she was killed by a escaped Wookiee prisoner wouldn’t it bail?” And the game has not physically present at the signing of the Corellian Treaty.
      They knew about Mon Mothma and Bel Iblis and tried to arrest the former and assassinate the later. Mon Mothma was secretly warned by Bail and left the Senate before she could get arrested and Bel Iblis survived the attempt on his life and used it to fake his death.
      As for Mon Calarmari the Empire never had the time to send a battle fleet (which was the only force capable of doing that bombardment you described) because they kept trying to track the Alliance High Command and the Rebel Fleet with Mon Calamari being tertiary.
