The whole concept was recycled from a series of commercials for HA! The Comedy Network (they later merged with another channel and changed their name to Comedy Central). They all had a guy doing a bunch of wacky stuff and going "Is this funny? I don't know! I had looked for this for around ten years I remember me and my dad watching it on nick on a thanksgiving marathon around 2007 or 2008, and thought it was completely lost media when I searched for gingerbread men in prison, and could not find it for around ten years even posted about it on lost media on Reddit at one point. One day a couple of years ago I told my friend the story and he found it in 5 minutes lol thank you uploading and not letting this be lost and bringing back a fun thanksgiving memory!
Fun Fact: This short was based on a series of live-action bumpers Bill Burnett wrote, scored and produced for HA! Comedy Channel, the pre-cursor of Comedy Central. Bill also gave the channel it's signature name in the first place. Fred Seibert was also in charge of producing the bumpers with his then-company Fred/Alan so it's no wonder they still have full rights to it.
I finally found this after like 10 years...This sht was TRAUMATISING. I always recognised it from the intro song and it always creeped me the f out.Whenever they would play this at night I knew I should change channels or I wouldn't sleep at night. Scariest parts for my younger self were: 1:09 , 1:40 , 2:13 , 2:53
I like the characters of Slap T. Pooch and the Tough Cookies, I just think that the concept of asking what is funny is something that you should never do when your trying to be funny. Sometimes things are funny just because they make no sense like that one Gingerbread man saying “I’m not a muffin” XD. They could’ve done this like Rocko’s Modern Life where you have this cool minded character in this crazy insane world. Also that choir with that farmer and his animals are very obnoxious, I feel like I’m gonna beat up that farmer and his friends if I hear him say “what is funny ?” one more time. Also it’s cool seeing this character appear in The Rugrats Movie in the Nickelodeon logo !!
To bad he hasn’t shown up or made series of him to also I don’t like the part he got squished by purple foot 🦶 but me I don’t like it was rude mean an gross weird to also I wish we see more of him
Seeing this now, makes me wish Cosmo (from Fairly Oddparents) were in Slap's place doing these things trying to make Poof (or anybody) laugh. XD. And cause Darren Norris voices Slap and Cosmo.
4:47-5:27 I never thought I'd enjoy hearing criminally insane gingerbread men doing a blues number while attempting a jailbreak (never thought I say that like a normal sentence either).
4:53 For anyone wondering what the lyrics are: "You can eat us with your hands Or you can flatten us in pans You can stick us in your oven, there's no heat that we can't stand Because we're... Tough cookies Tough cookies You can cook us You can bake us But you're never gonna break us Cause' we're... Tough cookies!"
i love this cartoon. the background music is so catchy and addicting, the dog and the randomness. its just completely insane its awesome. cheers to the creator thanks for the weirdness.
This was such a smart, layered cartoon; there's just so much going on. The surrealism, the nonsensical choir and almost haunting little tune, the David Attenborough-style voice, the slapstick played totally straight meshing with the meta questions about humor and craft and cartoons (especially visceral, 90s era ones in the vein of Ren and Stimpy.) You could make the argument that it's not really supposed to be funny, and yet it manages it anyway.
Brandon Panek same here I looked for it for years and couldn't find it till today. To put in to perspective I searched for 9 years and my friend found it in about ten minutes.
i've had this cartoon in the back of my head for years and years now and i was never able to pinpoint exactly what it was until now, and it holds up pretty well!
My favorite part was reading the sign of "Prison of the Criminally Insane Gingerbread Men". It was random like everything else, but one that just rolls off the tongue that even hearing it bursts into chuckles. And of course, the criminally insane gingerbread men have the personalities to match from singing to insane mantras to even "did you take a bite out of me?!"
i can see why this didn't get its own series, this is one of the most repetitive and inconsistent shorts I've ever seen all the main character does in the short is ask if anything that is happening in the short is comedic. while the singers are repeating the words what is funny like they think people will forget the title of this cartoon, i get it writers this cartoon is called what is funny. but do you really have to constantly hammer it down to the audience every second that you got? and the story completely goes from having this short be about a dog trying to ask the audience if anything he does is funny to this Gingerbread Men jail plot. either stick with one plot or the other plot guys
a question that this pilot is far from answering. also the background music sounds like it's directly from the n64 version of rayman 2. it uses samples from it

I never did and we could never find it until several years ago when it was put on a site somewhere. Of course, its here now as well. Oh, and for all those that are saying "this sucks, it wasnt funny", you're missing the point. It's not a comedy routine so much as discussion or musing on the subject of humor. It's more charming, interesting, and surreal rather than laugh-out-loud funny.

This is... really bad. No wonder it didn't get picked up, the jokes fall flat, the concept isn't great, and the show is just annoying. But I will say... I think you could have done something with the concept of someone who can just *change the reality of the cartoon,* and use cartoon logic to get out of situations. Like what if Slap was stuck in the vat, and used the thumb-tacks to launch himself out, due to pain in cartoons usually being portrayed as the character being launched in the air? You can do so much with that idea, I feel....
You can knead us with your hands. Or you can flatten us in pan's. You can stick us in your oven, there's no heat that we can damn. Because we're TOUGH COOKIES!!! 💪💪💪
To be honest this one was my least favourite. The fourth-wall breaks were overly done and the dog was trying WAY to hard if you ask me. He kept asking the audience if what he was doing was funny like every five minutes and he attempts near the beginning were rather stale like at 1:10 to 1:25. No wonder he didn't get a series.

Yes well he was first on oh yea cartons and short but someone had to put him intro he got stomp by a giant foot purple creature or human can’t tell whoever’s that is 😒
This is a much better concept than it is in practice. Nothing is more unfunny than asking if a joke is funny (nor is it at all entertaining)
The singing criminally insane ginger bread men were the only absurdly humorous bit in the entire short.
I don't know. The gags are more funnier than the dog asking what is funny alot.
