To this day, I still wonder how many of the mail-away Bart figures actually made it into circulation. I've never seen one in person at any collectible store or convention. This is one figure I wish I would have mailed away for when the Simpson figures were released. I had most of the set and enough proofs of purchase to get one, but never took advantage of the offer. Oh well. Great video as always!
Yeah from what i’ve read 3 were known to exist but this was from a forum a couple years ago. Ebay shows a couple being sold over the years but not a lot
Seeing old footage of the Star Wars figures on pegs makes me seriously emotional and nostalgic. Those really were the only toys I was into back then and not having a lot of money, I’d spend a lot of time thumbing through the pegs and making my choice.
When I was a little kid we went to visit my Grandparents in another state and their neighbor was having a yard sale. They had a couple Super Powers Mail Away Role Play Capes. I wish we had bought one.
I love toy history especially when it comes to classic-vintage toys lines! Some or maybe many special promo toys with coupons might be really rare now,and while back in the day wasn't so popular this might be their time to shine through online markets etc! As always a nice trip to memory lane man thanks for the good times!
@@EdsRetroGeekOut palitoy had 2 mail away actiom force figures..the 1st was the action force "commander" from wave 1 (1982) when action force was just generic military figures...it was baiscly the figure that would be released as the "Black Major" in 1983 but painted in an olive green British Army barracks dress unifiorm complete with the officers peaked cap.
The Predator toys from the mid 90s had a mail away toy that was the “camouflage” or “cloaked” version of the main Predator toy just made with clear plastic. It was cool as hell!
Being a big fangirl of all things Kryptonian I was so happy when they made adult sized supergirl shirts with detachable capes. I'm honestly considering a supergirl cape for my power wheelchair and finding a super shirt and some leggings to complete the look
How cool would that be? Me going forward at full speed with my cape on my chair flowing behind me? I should see if i can get one made or find one online
Still regret not mailing in that coupon for the Han Solo in Stormtrooper gear off the back of Fruit Loops when I was like 9. Cut it out, filled out the envelope, and never enclosed the 3 (?) dollars or whatever it was. Just sat there until my mom threw it away. Really bums me out thinking about it.
I missed out on Super Powers Darkseid as a kid. Wish I would have picked him up when I saw him at Toys R Us all those decades ago. Argh. Oh and I never got the mail away Clark Kent figure, either. Now that I think of it, I don't think I got any mail away toys. There were some cool ones like the G.I. Joe Super Trooper and the figure based on you if you joined the team. Ah well. Fun video man, I enjoyed it.
I remember the best mail a way from Star Wars when I was a kid - Boba Fett! It must’ve been 1981. A buddy of mine mailed a way and got 2 of them. I paid him $5 and got his 2nd one. Worth every penny and I still have him! Nice topic man!
Mail away figures were always interesting. I had the Predator mail away, which was the AvP 2 pack Predator mold cast in transparent plastic, but with newly tooled chrome accessories that were only available with that figure.
Bonkers was one of the greatest candies ever made, especially the chocolate kind. I recently found a candy called HI-CHEW at Dollar Tree that looks like the same thing, but haven't tried it yet, so here's hoping! As far as other mail away toys go, the Transformers Powedashers are one of the forgotten ones I can think of.
If you want another rabbit hole to go down, you should explore the food based mail-aways for Barbie as there was not only the Kool-Aid you mentioned but Little Debbie and Cheese-A-Saurus Rex ones with Kraft Mac & Cheese. Blue Box style, of course!
i remember as a kid the transformers & my little ponies used to do a mail away for a figure or two. If you collect x amount of points & you have to send an x amount of money plus shipping & handling.
Monster Cereal's Cardboard Castle seems amazing, I have the Kaws special edition from those cereals, but that giant playset is just beyond!!! Saludos, Ed!
I was lucky to snag Air Raiders Emperor Aerozar from eBay last year. Never thought I'd get my hands on one. Btw...you'll get to see him and my entire Air Raiders collection in person on June 24th :)
My mom did a mail away for me as a kid. I don't recall how much it was or how many upc ect. but it was for the invisible predator from the 90's predator toys. He was awesome lol! One of my favorite figures as a kid.
@@EdsRetroGeekOut I also has the alien queen with the whipping tail and soft headback you squeeze and the little mouth popped out. She was awesome lol!
Man making my year this year with these awesome toy history videos. Keep them coming. Man would love to find that mutant gobot in the wild. Maybe the attic invaders can find one on there next adventure
Awesome video!!! 😎 My mail-away story is about the Emperor from Return of the Jedi.. After mom saved up 5 upc codes for me, I sent away for it and thus began the excruciating wait for the Emperor to arrive!! I remember having a Death Star hangar type display in my room w/stormtroopers, biker scouts, tie pilots, commanders and Darth Vader himself all awaiting the Emperors arrival but no luck so far!! Well, long story short a few months later me and my family went on a 2 week vacation and when we returned home I remembered my dad going through the big pile of mail that had accumulated during our absence, he called me over with a BIG smile on his face and a small box in his hands.. I began to hear the Imperial March song in my head!!!😆😆😆😆
FYI, the story "Chains of Doom" was first published in 2016 under Hasbro's ownership of GoBots. The story retroactively justified all the recolored GoBots, but this was 31 years after the green Creepy toy was released!
Another fantastic video and a reminder of how cool it was to grow up in the 80’s. Well researched. Great visuals, brilliant editing makes for a very satisfying watch 👏
I miss the little comics, toys and holograms that used to be in the cereal packets. It was the highlight of breakfast to open a new box and see what was inside. Do any brands still do gifts in cereal packets or is that not allowed these days? I am in the UK.
Great video, Ed! Transformers had quite a few mail-away figures in the 80's. They were available via "robot points" (which were kind of like proof of purchase of a retail figure) plus X amount. For example, Reflector was $10 USD + 2 robot points and the Omnibots were $5 USD + 2 robot points each. Anyway, thanks again for another entertaining and informative video!
The only three toys I remember getting through mail away were; Anikan Skywalker {old guy from Return of the Jedi, series of toys}, Clark Kent from Super Powers, and Reflector from Transformers.
Man, I remember being able to buy as many of those Congo mailaways as you wanted for 75 cents each when I first started selling stuff. They clearly overestimated how many of those toys they would be sending out!
The classic 'Star Wars empty box/I.O.U.' ended my parents involvement with any mail -away items. Later , i myself would send off Kool-aid points , or later those send away for a free figure deals. As a young Man , i sent off for everything Wizard offered.
I still have a STARCOM pyramid shaped space ship that was a mail away for...i think Frosted Flakes. also, some NONLego blocks from cereal (Tente Blocks??) and from Koolaid, i got Kool-Aid Man the video games for both my Atari 2600 and my Intellivision.
When Kenner brought back Star Wars in the 90's, Froot Loops had a promotion where you could get a Storm Trooper Han Solo. Heck yeah I wanted it. I waited so long I forgot about it. (Like 6 months) it finally came in a little white box about the size of the figure. 😬 But it was awesome. And then the same figure came in a 3 pack with Luke and Chewbacca. Lol
Bro 😎 you just brought me so many memories with this video especially with the Sky commanders and Air raiders I loved those toys and still have some from my childhood much respect to you sir for what you do 🫡🦾❤️from Robstown Texas

Hey Ed you missed out on the legendary WWF Hasbro mail away figs. Hulk Hogan, Undertaker & Bret Hart all fetch a pretty penny when still sealed in their baggies
Hi Ed, could you do a video on the mail away toys from star wars? I seem to recall (51 years old now) that you had to cut out the Names of the figures of the cardbacks and the first figure you could get was boba fett. However after that other figures were announced as well but i cant remember which ones. Greetings from Ghent, might come over to Kalken on the 6th of May, Gert
Sure, Raiders of the Lost Ark had Belloq in Ceremonial Outfit. Star Wars had Boba Fett, Bossk, 4-LOM, Admiral Ackbar, Nien Nunb, The Emperor, and Anakin Skywalker. Starcom had Emperor Dark. GI Joe had Cobra Commander, Major Bludd, Duke, Hooded Cobra Commander, Sgt. Slaughter, Fridge, and Super Trooper. Super Powers had Steppenwolf and Clark Kent. GI Joe Sgt. Savage had Desert Sgt. Savage. Thundercats had Mumm-ra.
