I love that Captain Harris! Somehow, he showed up on our sunny shores here, in Singapore, at only one store ever, despite being a US only release. As an adult, I sold my Police Academy collection including the Precinct! I regret it 5 years later🤣😭
About 5 of my 1980s MLP Ponies are Horseshoe Points. Tux and Tails, Wedding Day, and Repunzil. These were rare and also my mom was more a fan than I was. FYI the mail away Ponies were the only way you could get European releases. Minty and Baby Tic-Tac were pretty hard hard to get. I am still mad my Baby Tic-Tac was stolen.
I can't recall if we did any mail-aways when I was a kid, but I do have that baby Stocking MLP from when I used to collect g1s. As for favorite cereal as a kid-probably Count Chocula, although I was a fan of a lot of those marshmallow cereals in general. I would eat all the grainy pieces first, saving the marshmallows for last. Best part of the whole cereal, if you ask me!
Cool video about cereal mail in offers! The Rice Crispies Muppet/Sesame mini stuffed animals were unique. Recently, Cap'n Crunch had an offer for very detailed Cap'n statues to choose from 3 designs. Highest quality mail in toy I've ever seen so far.
I never got to obtain any of the mini sesame street plushes legitimately (I think the promotion ran a few years before my time anyway) but I've managed to find Oscar and Bert at my local flea market! They're surprisingly good quality for cereal box prizes, and are absolutely adorable. I think if I ever find more of the set, I'll get those too. I'm not sure what their actual value is today, but I got both of mine for less than five dollars. Either they're not very valuable, or the people selling them didn't know what they had.
When they ran out of Cpt Harris figures, they sent a carded Sweetchuck in a regular mailer envelope. That’s why you can find one with a mint card. Gi Joe Ninja Viper and Super Powers Clark Kent will always be my 2 favorite mail away exclusives.
Mail-away figures are a great way for manufacturers to test how certain figures will do, like with Clark Kent in the Super Powers line. Too bad the series was discontinued before he could get a mass retail release though.
I only recently got into the Earthworm Jim figures (nearly completed what I want for my collection), but when I first saw the green and black Jim, my first thought was that they'd done a Green Lantern crossover for some reason 😅
Oh my gosh this is one of my fave videos in the toy history series so far! Mail away things were always the best I know a few companies that still do it. Thank you for mentioning ponies too!! I love collecting the mail away ponies, never had a chance to get them originally. They also had some where you could pick the color you wanted. Fun fact, another type of toy promotion hasbro did for my little pony back in the day was have an exclusive baby pony at Chuck E Cheese, a pizza place, that you had to play games for enough tickets to exchange for the pony. I always thought it was cool, I cant remember ever seeing branded toys as prizes at those types of places. The pony had the logo on its hip. Ps: Hooray for getting a sponsor!! Such a good one too, I wondered about that cereal but i might actually consider it now haha
@@EdsRetroGeekOut Its pretty cool 😃 It was three colors to pick from! Blue, pink, and purple. They were also the only ponies to have no symbols on their hips. They made an adult Stockings pony that baby stockings was later based on too! Pretty sure the birthflower ponies were mail away too, each pony represents a birthday month, so youd send for the one matching your birthday!!
I always loved mail-away exclusives when I was a kid. It was such a long wait (felt like forever when you're a kid), but very rewarding when it finally arrived in the mail. I would have to say that the most illusive exclusive figure ever made, and one I've yet to see in person or posted by other collectors, was the Mail-Away Mattel Simpsons Bart Simpson figure that had a white shirt with Blinky the fish on it. That figure is a white whale in terms of rarity. Another great video!
oh wow, thank so much for reminding me about the Transformers mail-away! I had that and remember having the poster on my wall for what seemed like years (probably only a few months in reality). I played with the base until it fell apart and held onto the membership card so long I may possibly still have it somewhere! Man I loved playtime back then.
I think the only mail-aways I ever got were Clark Kent and the box of army men out of the back of a comic book. Wow, what a letdown that was!😂😂 "Over 100 Pcs.!" Yeah, sure, because they're paper thin and all stuffed inside like an index card box! 😂😂
Awesome video Ed Always ignored mail aways, even though the concept was great, don’t think my mother could’ve taken it on top of every thing else I pestered her for🤣
This was a really fun one- so thanks for doing this! I so miss the quality mail away toys & fast food stuff you could get at many places back in the day! It made the collecting more fun & I would send away for as much as I could w/ the Joes & Tfs being my favorites as my grandmother got me most of the SW ones. Once when I was very young, I dumped a whole box of cereal out looking for the prize- you know the mail away one. Honestly I wish companies would bring back these programs again! Anyway great video & keep up the excellent work!
"G1" for TF is a fan term. The brand was not actually called that. Fans started using it to distinguish the original toys from later relaunches of the brand etc. Same with ponies and most things that use it 😀
I collected a ton of the AvP toys, so I had a few of the Ambush Predators. They used the same mold as the "Jungle Hunter" from the AvP two-pack, but - unusually for mail-away promos - the accessory tools were unique to the Ambusg figure, and if I recall they were never used by any other later figures in the line.
Well researched. I have hundreds of G1 ponies and I hadn't even realized that Stockings was the last mail order promo pony. There were so many cool mail order offers for various toylines in the 80s and 90s! Fav? I don't have it but I would say the set of twice as fancy baby ponies. They are super expensive now even without their packaging.
It wasn't a mail away but,I remember winning a ton of Ben 10: Alien Force stuff at my local Toys R Us. I'm pretty sure it included a special edition translucent sparkly Alien X figure that looked so cool! The best cereal has always been Nesquick!
I actually ordered the S.T.A.R.S. membership pack as a kid. I used the command center as a stand-in Teletraan 1 for the Autobots. That was the most fun I had with cardboard!
Yeah, it's the only Feral we have gotten, so I can say I have a full X-Force. Hopefully, since they have done the Wolfsbane head, we might finally get a new Feral. I can also claim 74 Avengers on my Earth 616.
I didn't remember the Cpt. Harris figure being a mail-away. My brother and I both had one (I guess our parents got two so we wouldn't fight over it, but we kind of hated when they got us identical figures).
I still have my mail in clear Predator with accessories and the bags and white box it came in. The figures arms and legs have yellowed, but still cool.
I sent away for PinPal Moe from the Simpsons Playmates line back in early 00's (a Toyfare exclusive) unfortunately my order form was returned to me and marked the product had been sold out. I never recovered and never mailed away for anything again 😥
I remember saving to get the Police Academy Capt. Harris “exclusive” figure. After patiently waiting for around 3 months, I got my package. I opened it only to find a Completely different figure! It was a Snack Attack House figure! I was devastated, and confused. It was a new figure in the new series, and on the back. It showed the figure I ordered in the new line, Capt. Harris!! So much for “exclusive”!!! A true letdown.
Super Trooper, The Fridge, and the hooded Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe. I gotta admit the Captain Harris click bait pulled in on this one. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work.
I was sooo not paying attention to saving all my proof of purchases… I missed out on all these cool Mail always.. too bad these were awesome.! Come on hasbro let’s bring back the cereal Mail always with marvel legends and transformers!! A galactus in every cereal box!
That is a fantastic idea. With my luck and the way shipments are packed though, it'd be a blind box 'build a figure' and I'd end up with three left arms, two right legs, lower torso half...

I remember I sent off for the Police Academy free figure and they were out of Captain Harris so I was sent an “Under Cover” Sweet Chuck. The other figure I got in the mail was a Luke Skywalker figure that was dressed as a Storm Trooper with removable helmet.
The Earthworm Jim mailaway figure's color scheme makes me want to nickname it "Green Lantern Earthworm Jim". Just put the Green Lantern emblem on the chest of his power suit and replace the fun with a power ring and it makes sense.

So I received an apology letter and they gave me a Sweetchuck figurine well ahead of its release date. As a child that made me ecstatic. As an adult I wish I had the Captain Harris figure. Wouldn't have really mattered anyway though, none of my Police Academy figures ended up staying in their packaging.
I actually did the Capt. Harris mail-away back in the day. I didn't receive Harris, but actually a Sweetchuck figure in a fire hydrant costume. Disappointing, but it was still kinda cool.

You should look it up and perhaps do a video about it :)
I still have my Mail away POTF* Han Solo in Disguise Stormtrooper from kenner, I think was corn pops promotion or just a kellogs cereal promo. *(POTF means Power of the Force)
The 1st thing I ever sent to wait for was absolutely the mailaway Boba Fett. I swear it took 8 months to get that damn thing but it was so exciting when I finally did. I think a lot of these mailaway premiums can be found complete because by the time a kid that ordered them received them he had discovered girls And just left the toys up in the attic unopened!
Great content as usual Ed. I see that Clambo from Street Sharks has finally gotten released. I wonder if your video on him helped make the project a thing.
I still remember checking the mail and finding a box addressed to me and asking my mom if I could open it. She let me since she didn't know what it was, but once she saw the Night Fighter Robo-Cop inside she remembered she had secretly ordered it for my birthday several weeks prior. Oops
Me and my twin brother did the police academy mail away my brother never got one. I got one but not what I was supposed to get, but I did get a newer figure I had not seen in stores yet. They were supposedly out of the one I was supposed to get.
All I got was from the mail Order was.I had most of the 84 autobot cars. I had about $20 from Xmas one year & I had some robot points. My parents helped me filled out the order form.I finally Got a G1 wheeljack Ordered $8 Plus I went for the Mini bot 3 pack Warpath,Cosmos & Cliffjumper. Which they used the hubcap toy in place of him. back then it took forevern to get that stuff like Months.
Back-in-the-day the Anakin Skywalker mail away was a solid disappointment. Although the translucent Predator was amazing. Still have both in my collection luckily.
I actually got the Kenner clear predator I really wanted it as a kid I lost mine but Lucky for me n websites I bought one for cheap n it's one of my hoilygrails

This took me back to a mail away order from Capri Sun, (in the UK) I got a bendy sid the sloth and Alex from Madagascar 😂
I still have my Mail away POTF* Han Solo in Disguise Stormtrooper from kenner, I think was corn pops promotion or just a kellogs cereal promo. *(POTF means Power of the Force)
He’s a cool mail away 🤘
The 1st thing I ever sent to wait for was absolutely the mailaway Boba Fett. I swear it took 8 months to get that damn thing but it was so exciting when I finally did.
I think a lot of these mailaway premiums can be found complete because by the time a kid that ordered them received them he had discovered girls And just left the toys up in the attic unopened!
Great Video Ed.
I sent away for the Captain Harris (Police Academy), but they sent me Sweetchuck. :P
Everybody seems to have had that happened to them 🤔
I remember the mail away stormtrooper han solo think it was froot loops that did it
Awesome 🥳
Great content as usual Ed.
I see that Clambo from Street Sharks has finally gotten released.
I wonder if your video on him helped make the project a thing.
I don’t think I had an effect on that but its cool to see him finally made 🤠

Well I give you full credit to making me aware of his existence thanks to your highly entertaining toy history videos.
Thanks 🤓
I always wanted the Autobot base
Another awesome episode!
I want that lifeline action figure. 😀👍
Dang, the translucent Predator and glow in the dark Robocop figures are Cool !?
I had Lego mailaways a got a few Lego's from cereal boxes.
Awesome 🤘
I still remember checking the mail and finding a box addressed to me and asking my mom if I could open it. She let me since she didn't know what it was, but once she saw the Night Fighter Robo-Cop inside she remembered she had secretly ordered it for my birthday several weeks prior. Oops
Awesome 🤩
sent in for many a toy myself. very cool
I've been eating that cereal for 3 weeks and I've gained 30 lb thanks Ed!
He’s back 🥲🥳 missed ya
I picked up a sealed Earthworm Jim mail-a-way. I just pretend that he is Evil Jim from the cartoon since he's green.
Groovy 😎
Aaaaand now I own a mailaway Earthworm Jim. Ha.
Allow 10 to 14 weeks for delivery was an eternity when you were a child. Even 4 to 6, or 6 to 8 weeks was. Now as an adult it seems to fly by.
Now everything is a mailaway preorder it seems 😵💫
Another great video! Very interesting!
Thanks buddy 🤓
Me and my twin brother did the police academy mail away my brother never got one. I got one but not what I was supposed to get, but I did get a newer figure I had not seen in stores yet. They were supposedly out of the one I was supposed to get.
That sucks, i heard they uncovered 200 capt harris toys a couple years ago somewhere in a storage
@@EdsRetroGeekOut They should send us one they still owe my brother a toy.😊
All I got was from the mail Order was.I had most of the 84 autobot cars. I had about $20 from Xmas one year & I had some robot points. My parents helped me filled out the order form.I finally Got a G1 wheeljack Ordered $8 Plus I went for the Mini bot 3 pack Warpath,Cosmos & Cliffjumper. Which they used the hubcap toy in place of him. back then it took forevern to get that stuff like Months.
By the way, when will the mail-away Ed action figure be out? :D I could see it coming with a toy room backdrop and a TMNT t-shirt ;)
🤣👌 yes
Almost 55K 🥳
+30 years later and I'm still waiting for my Kelloggs G1 Prowl Transformer in the mail.
Back-in-the-day the Anakin Skywalker mail away was a solid disappointment. Although the translucent Predator was amazing. Still have both in my collection luckily.
For anyone interested, there's an earthworm jim toy moc on ebay atm. I would buy it but it's like £150. Lol
Nice vid dude. Love the predator
Thanks buddy 😁
I still have my star wars mailaway mace windu.

The mail away batman with translucent blue cape
I should still have my coolaid points, was aiming for a gameboy

Great Video. Topp
I mailed away for Captain Harris and I didn’t get him. I got the guy who shoots a sandwich with a note that they ran out. I was bummed and never was able to get him.
