Well done Simon! Family is indeed a great motivation driver 😊 Cannot agree more. “Embrace the suck!”: that’s exactly what I repeated to myself when I was on 100K Route 68 ultra marathon last weekend 😂
Love it - and it shows the contrast to. Like for me, I need both "positive" and "negative" drivers depending on context. Both the warm cozy positive vibe of family and all, and the 'suck it up buttercup'
Yup, exactly! And although I'd usually say "it depends on your definition of fun" - in this case...nah! Waking up at 3am to run 4 miles isn't fun no matter type 1 or 2.
I did it 2 days ago except I did 7km instead of the 4 miles so that I covered 2 full marathons. It was a stupid thing for me to do as I’m prone to injury and it doesn’t really help improve your physical performance. It does however challenge your mental fortitude and it gives me some confidence for my first ultra in a months time. As a training program, I feel that I would’ve been better to Zone-2 run a half marathon everyday for 5 days.
Congrats but sorry about the injury - hope you bounce back fast. And totally - doing this as part of training is high risk low rewards. Better stick to a well structured training plan if it's for fitness!
@@runningwithsimonFortunately I didn’t get injured doing the challenge, I’m just prone to injury and it was a big risk to take for no real physical benefit.
Most of my running are in the dark. The only reason. I feel a have the world to myself and the other plus if you can stick with less sleep I get more done 👌,@@runningwithsimon
Thanks for sharing your experience and making that video🙌!!! I did mine a few weeks ago („just“ the half one for 24 hours because of my actual training level). Really looking forward to do the „whole“ one someday. I think everybody can adjust it to their training level (like you did with the extra one). You‘re absolutely right about the injury risk. The rest of the challenge is all about sleep deprivation, mental toughness/discipline and being prepared and organized 💪 I felt like after a long rave weekend in my twenties 🤣
Love the info you provided! I will be doing this challenge toward the end of this month. It'll be my 4th year running the 4x4x48. Sucks there's no challenge shirt this year as i typically use that as an incentive. Lol
So fun to see you run in a Stockholm Midnattsloppet shirt! (I'm from Stockholm ;) )I've attempted an alternative challange: run for 1 hour every third hour during 24 hours. This will rack up 50 miles as well but during one day/night. It's tough as nails too!
During the 4x4x48 - it depended but at least milk + protein (whey). But sometimes it was more elaborate, like a smoothie (but still with the base of milk + protein). Lately (so not this video) I've been using tailwind recovery mix. Same concept. You mostly just want the protein to build back and recover faster.
Yeah I remember when I did mine. In matter fact, I think I did a 50 miler like a 12 hour race like a month or so before I found out this 48 miles throughout the two days was a lot harder and it was a lot harder in my family you know cause my wife was worried about me so she asked me to we have a treadmill she said go on the treadmill in the middle of the night and so I did that and got through it and it, I think I grew you know through it. I’ll have to do it again sometime good man enjoyed it.
My wife was also worried. But mostly worried I'd miss a night run and originally wanted me to not go in a different room for the 11 and 3am. I vetoed that however - didn't want to wake her up. (Also I know it's a random thing to say but...I should really get a treadmill...)
My wife and I took on this last year during the actual time the challenge happens (first weekend in March).....on a side note we live in upstate NY so our first 3 runs happened during a huge snow storm. I can tell you that the running wasn't that hard, but the mental part was by far the worst part. Thank you for putting this video together
I have not done this one. But each year I do a Longest Day Chellenge - Running every hour, on the hour, for 24 hours. First year was just 1.1mile each our, but being slowly increasing it and this year I want to do 2miles each hour
Once in nov. 2020 (for fun and experience) I participated in a virtual 'One more loop' challenge on your own loop (bc. of covid) which was a minimum of a 6.66km loop every hour from 5:00AM till 10:00PM. I managed 10 loops with a total of 69.3km. What a crazy challenge it was.
Yes, it's about the same. Yeah, it was intense as I jumped into this challenge a day before it started and I was far from being prepared. Getting stiffer and stiffer by the hour, getting more and more tired after a couple of loops, getting more and more bored doing another loop on your own. But, mostly it was a great experience.
13 - I think it makes more sense (otherwise when you think about it, it's more like 4 x 4 x 44.5). But to each their own. If that 13th run had bean middle of the night....maybe I would have skipped
@ali_endurance_athlete Wow that's a huge effort. I will definitely give it a go. I will do a version of it, maybe less time and more klms. I love the concept.
No boats were harmed in the making of this movie
Who’s gonna carry the boats?!
😂😂😂
And the logs....
@@SageOfEchoesyou do it be like goggins!
The Nora run is such a beautiful concept. You gave me fuel for my next run
I love to share miles with her! On trail preferably, but in this specific case, it was refreshing to have her come along :)
Would love to see you do a backyard Ultra Simon! I’m training for my first one and hope to be able to do 12 x 6.71km loops in 12 hours
Some day... If there was a small one in San Diego / SoCal in a time period I'm free, I'd give it a shot! Also, good luck on yours!
So glad you did this! Mine a couple of weeks ago is something I’ll remember for my whole life!
Congratulations :)
I did it last weekend, mentally it was just as hard as I'd expected but physically it was surprisingly easy
Congratulations! Exactly! Although I know quite a few people that got injured because they weren't really runners.
@@runningwithsimon I'm definitely a runner planning to run my first ultra later this year
Haha I panicked when I saw run #13 😂. Glad it was optional or I would of had to do it again lol
haha sorry for the scare!
So much of what you said was spot on! I did this 2022 and it was great! Watching your videos brought back good memories 🏃🌱
This video was helpful indeed! Thank you. My nephew and I are planning to do this at the end of December in beautiful Montreal weather 🎉
Oh cool! Good luck!

It didn't look like fun but I think I'm going to have to try it now. It'll make for a memorable weekend anyway!

Yes sounds much harder!
Good to see another runner using protein powder as part of their recovery care!
That was almost one of my tip - to make sure you have enough protein to build back (and sometimes that means powder/shake)
My bf packed protein powder when we hiked Mt Whitney😂
Awesome👍🙏🙏🙏. Will gv it a try recently.
Good luck!
Great job. Amazing content. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Thanks mate!
I'm early in my first 50 miler training, but am planning on hopefully doing this in July when I'm camping.
Good luck! It's a good preparation ahead of a 50 miler!

Nice job! And nice shirt! Midnattsloppet Stockholm 2013. Did you run?

I'm sure you had to wake up middle of the night plenty! And running 4 miles is probably nicer than some of the clean up...
whats your stretching routine like? can you make a video on that or talk about it?
Great suggestion - I'll try to do a video about this some time soon!

Some people here already did it this year. I'm not going to. I want my min 8h sleep 😊
Totally... I think this kind of challenge actually is a great way to see how important rest and having uninterrupted sleep are.
What if I do it in my living room on my treadmill does that count?
Of course!
