As they also have to do to enter Canada and will shortly be required also to enter the EU(if they can get their system to work. it is called reciprocityu.
Exactly. We don't do longhaul now but I remember the stress of filling out the forms and waiting for acceptance. US immigration is also horrid. I bet our Immigration officers are super kind and friendly up to the US ones.
You would think that Royal Caribbean would be glad that guests with drink vouchers that are worth up to 14 dollars would be used for a 25 cents can of soda. Ridiculous
Don, I applied for the UK ETA as soon as I was available. It took 20 minutes. I received the confirmation of approval within 1 hour. If it saves or reduces a line, I think it is time and money well spent. I am waiting for the EU version to be available.
Don. 2 points on the UK Travel authorization. Scottish Citizens ARE UK citizens, as are English, Welsh and Northern Ireland Citizens and naturally they do not need it. It is the same as saying Alaskan Citizens do not need a US ESTA to enter continental US. Irish Citizens are excluded as well. Also the January 8 date is NOT for all nationalities. GCC, Gulf Corporation Council, Citizens are already required as they are the trial population. European citizens this will apply from April 2025 onwards. Citizens of any country that required to have Visa issued to enter the UK nothing changes.
Don. We were on Royal when this was done. One night at the bar I was told that I had to have them open the coke and I was furious. Next day, the policy seemed to magically go away. If they start taking away perks like this, they will loose long time customers as we are Diamond members. Love your show. Keep up the great reporting.
Thanks for the info regarding need for travel visa for North American travelers. Do not understand why bringing drinks to one's room is a problem for the cruise line! It the drink a perk or not?!!!
Hi Don Not sure you read comments but Electronic Visas are quite common. Australians and NZ have had to do ESTA’s to enter USA by plane or ship. The ESTA for UK covers UK including Scotland, Wales and Nthn Island. Europe will also have ESTA in 2025 so if you go to UK and Europe 2 esta’s Australia and NZ require visas. Many countries in Asia require online visa/entry details and in most cases only valid for one visit. So why should you make an issue of it as the rest of the world has been doing USA ESTA’s for years. The ESTA is not new to the rest of the world. By the way a global would not work as each requires different data to be provided. Cheers
Thank you, Don, I think the electronic visa would make things easier and save time I would not have a problem with it. Glad RCL rolled back on the soda back to the cabin as that did not make sense at all.
What a shame us travellers have to go through all this trouble to get to the EU and UK.We have this problem with the us for years.on my recent visit to New Orleans it took us from 8.00am to 5 45 PM to get 3000 passengers off the ship, on a past visit to Maine Us immigration sent 1 officer to process 800 British guests to go ashore.Get your house in before you have a go at us.
As long as you’re aware that it’s a shame that EU and UK travelers have to go through the same thing if they’re coming over to America. Actually, it’s the new norm in every country. If you’re going anywhere I would assume there’s an app you have to fill out with a temporary visa. I was on a Disney cruise an Alaskan Disney cruise that went out of Vancouver and yes, it took that same amount of time you could say from 8 AM to 6 PM to get the 2700 off the ship luckily we were in group so I got off the ship with my family at about 11 AM because you get off when your luggage is ready. This is no different than paying for a checked bags now another way to get cash.
Had a similar situation. Sailed from Miami to Bahamas, then to Key West. Entire ship had to go through immigration before we could get off, took hours. Ridiculous!
Saw you on La Lido Loca's post at the Yes/No game. Hysterical! We were excited to see Cole is the cruise director. He was on Discovery this Sept on our Alaska cruise and was our highlighted staff member!!!
I just got off Royal on Saturday. One reason told to me that they run out of certain items at the bar, mainly Fosters, is because Diamond and higher take the beer to their room to use up their daily allotment. However, I saw unopened cans of soda leave the bar on my sailing
That doesn't make sense because whether you drink at the bar or take it to your cabin it's still 1 drink from the bar. It also doesn't make sense that Foster's beer is so popular because it's an Australian beer that no sensible Australian would touch as it tastes disgusting.
@ People order Fosters because it’s nearly 2 beers in volume…more bang for the buck. I was told what I said by a BARTENDER on the ship. I think he might know a thing or two about it. And all the bars ran out of Fosters on about day 9. Sometimes people don’t use all their earned vouchers (drinks) during the day, so they get the rest of their allotment for the day from bars to drink later in the cruise. Now that I’ve explained it again, does it make sense now?
@kjsfl386 I must admit that it does make more sense now, but why would anyone order a higher volume drink when it tastes so disgusting 🫣 ( my opinion as an Aussie).
I'm not concerned with getting an authorization before travel. I did it when I went to Australia and New Zealand. I hadn't thought about getting cans with my Diamond Plus vouchers. I usually get one or two mocktails a day (out of my five vouchers) as I don't drink alcohol. Some cans of Diet Coke or Sprite would be nice at times.
It's about time we had an Evisa Americans especially swaning thru customs while I'm being stopped for this that and the other, oh and I hope they have to jump thru hoops the same as we have to every dot and T crossed meticulously
Thankfully they got that fire put out quickly, and it didnt spread. We offeten take a cocktail back to our room to enjoy on the balcony. Travel.is getting more complicated. But if we need that visa to cross the pond. Then we will do it.
Oh and don’t waste your time with the part that says you need to scan the chip on your passport. No matter how many times we tried neither my husband nor I could get this part to work, so we had to take a photo and upload it and that is what took so many tries because they are SO picky about the photos. Have a strong beverage by your side to get through this one.
I think north american entitlement is showing, If the country you are travelling to/or through requies specific paperwork You as the traveller are responsible for finding out what those documents might be AND also to get said documents in advance of travel. To me this is the cost and the priviledge of travel.
Don! I gotta say, I feel like you are definitely enjoying yourself on this cruise, and you're certainly a little bit mucho TIPSY making this video.😅 That's OK, though. Never heard about this electronic transfer thing before, so good info anyway.
what is the complaint North Americans... UK citizens have been paying for ESTA to enter USA since 2009.. if I recall and Canada also started same years ago... about time UK catch up
Est can be expensive in particular for a travelling family (inclusive of an infant) where Aruba charges approx $49 U.S. per person and requires a new one on each visit. Strikes many of us as a simple cash grab! Travelling today has become less appealing along with a much greater hassle for some elderly vacationers who find technology challenging.
Now you definitely need to do your homework about what additional paperwork you need before travelling internationally, especially to a place you've either never been to or haven't visited in a while.
Approximately five years ago Philadelphia, PA printed an article entitled: New Rules for Visits to Many European Nations. It's an authorization called an ETIAS...European Travel Information and Authorization System. Pronounced A-tee-as. The UK and Ireland have chosen not to be a part of the agreement. And now you announce to enter the UK you need an Electronic Travel Authorization. Interesting!
I think Royal letting soda go unopened is good, and opening the alcoholic beverages is also a good idea. That way, the alcoholic beverage is less likely to be shared with minors.
Ugh. I guess I can see why you need this even on a layover. I’ve left Heathrow on layovers before to get some real fish and chips and then returned. But still will be a hassle 🤨
Thanks for the video. I’m going on Royal Caribbeans Symphony of the Seas. If I order a bottle of wine at a specialty restaurant, am I allowed to take it back to my room if I don’t finish the whole bottle?
I can understand Royal Caribbean not wanting to let people take beer not opened because you never know who they are giving it to, but the soda part is just silly.
Starting mid-2025, American nationals will need to apply for travel authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before arriving in Europe. This ETIAS authorization will be necessary to enter 30 European countries.
In this age of internet connectivity, there is no reason an interconnected system couldn't be set up for all international travel visas and such. Well, no reason other than political, that is.
Who cares if they get hammered in their cabin? At least then it’s not in public/annoying other passengers. Its more likely that they think these canned drinks are being shared with nonVIPs or just given away.

What's the problem with electronic documents? UK citizens have had to get a visa to enter U.S for years now....and it still takes ages to get through emigration at New York cruise terminal.
Well you could be getting the drinks for someone else how is anyone going to know I think that’s why they open the drink at the bar maybe that’s they thinking
Handling fee is NOT part of the Visa Cost. You can do it online yourself for US13. However if something this simple is what you do not want to do yourself and you use an agent to do it for you they can charge, I call it Rip-Off, whatever they like. Do not blame the Brits for that,
This is a requirement issued by UK Government, for entry to the UK (from 8th January 2025). Requirements for entry to the EU are operating on a different timescale.

Water and soda should be allowed in rooms. Shame on RCCL.
Thanks RCCL , AKA: THE GRINCH
