Best video i have watched in years to give inspiration. Living in Scotland we get a lot of "dull damp nothingness" Today is another of those days, you have however inspired me to get off my backside and get out and do something. Thank you...
After 6 months of almost constant greying and rainy weather, it's almost impossible to keep your spirits and motivation up, so it takes more than a short and shouting video to help!
I’m currently in Skye looking out on grey nothingness and horizontal rain. You can go to an epic landscape and it can be swathed in cloud and rain. I now feel I can go out and find something to shoot. Thank you for the inspiration and enthusiasm!
Have fun - I hope you get some nice shots. I will never forget my trip to Elgol in Dec 2021 - the cloud was so low and thick, there was zero visibility of the Cuillin Mountains. I recall taking a couple of long exposures of the rocks that stand some ten metres off the beach. But still a wonderful and atmospheric place. I wish I was there.
Can't stop laughing at "I'm basically a creep in a tunnel", then the "Yeah, he's the one" look & little nod as the guy walks past, to get the pull-zoom shot! Priceless!!
Great to see you do something different coz let’s face it, when we have a day off you can guarantee the weather in the UK isn’t always perfect. Having some fall back ideas is great. Thank you 🙏🏻 👍🏻
i absolutly love shooting in conditions that's challenging it can only make you better photographer and make you realy get intament with your creative prosses .
I recently took my camera and tripod up onto the South Lancashire moors on a very wet and misty day and came home with some very satisfying, moody, misty monochromes. Now I look forward to that kind of weather.
I'm an aspiring photographer and from watching a fair amount of your videos you've inspired me to be more creative with my photos and the different compositions I use! Love the videos ❤
These are the reasons I generally do not hesitate to go shoot in nasty conditions, for often one can find an entirely different subject range when embracing the conditions that have been dealt. Here in western North Dakota and eastern Montana, subjects often include old abandoned structures (the semi-arid climate lends to preservation of many of these old homesteads or grain elevators) or old farm implements that lend themselves well to black and white treatment or even long exposures in fog, rain or snow. Down in Wyoming, I have shot Devils Tower numerous times in every weather condition and some of my most dramatic images were days when the Tower was cloaked in fog. Living here with months of adverse weather during the long winters (it is still brown and snowy here when the rest of the US is already mowing grass lol) has taught me to think outside the usual box since I can't hibernate for the seven months of brown. Great points here in this video!
The timing is perfect! I have an upcoming trip to a famously weather-challenged island. If I’m lucky enough to get good days, great, but I don’t want to waste any bad days thinking there’s nothing to shoot.
I love that you use square format a lot. It’s always been my favourite crop ratio as it is often more challenging to shoot. Thanks for the tip on the guide book, heading that way to get one, or two or…
Hey Heaton, you should consider doing more street photography. Landscape in the winter and street in the summer. High contrast full sun is great for street.
Thanks for the video. It’s cold and drizzly here in Wisconsin in the middle of march. But I’m off on a Monday and soon I’ll be heading out with my camera to see what the work has to show me.
The last seascape took my breath away! Thank you for this different video full of ideas for ‘nothing weather’ which we have endured for so long. I am going to South Uist soon and you have given me lots of ideas to go out even when the weather is nothing.
If you like tunnels, one of the best to photograph is the Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg. The St. Pauli area is a great area to photograph and if you travel northwards along the river there are some great landscapes as well. An opportunity to practice architecture in landscape photography.
Im a beginner youtuber for fishing and nature photography etc but you're inspiring me to try Landscapes and minimalist images. That last image of the post and pier was truelly stunning. Thanks Thomas 💙
Some cracking ideas there Tom! Just moved to Tynemouth and recognised Whitley Bay straightaway! Must admit, I'm always very nervous of having my camera anywhere near water, especially the salty kind!!
Thomas, my favorite was the b&w of the waterfall but the b&w of the post with the pier in the distant background was a very close second. I admire your enthusiasm and creativity.
Great video Thomas! Some years a go I saw a photo of a black and white image of a landscape with the foreground having some flowers in color. It was then I realized the value of using the contrast of color on a somewhat dreary day.
I haven't watched the channel for a while and lost interest over the last year. But this video has reignited the fire. Thoroughly enjoyed this one and will keep an eye open for more from now on.
Welcome back. I hope your interest lasts. I know with my own photography, I go through highs and lows of excitement and enjoyment. Feb/March is always a tough time.
wow. I always learn something new and fun from your videos. I started photography a little over a year ago. I was so excited to get outside and practice, but it was sooooo cold (Colorado in January). So we went to the train museum to practice. It was so much fun. There were models, and old trains and cars - even an airplane. There's always somewhere to play when you have a camera in hand. Thanks for the work you do.
Great follow up to last weeks video Thomas and I do appreciate that it will appeal to the average photographer, no need to jet halfway round the world (although that would be nice) more videos like this please.
Thomas, you should come visit the Pacific Northwest (in the US) some time! I'd be glad to show you around. Waterfalls and cloudy days are the primary subjects!
Loved this video so much I've come back and viewed it again - sorry if that messes with your stats! It's easy to get put off by a flat grey day but this proves what a land of opportunity it remains. Brilliant
Hello Thomas, you won't believe what happened. I saw you in my dream tonight. You were in Turkey, we were taking photos and you asked me about my new born baby. Haha we were hanging out just like two friends. Any way, cheers mate
I go out on days like that because if I don't go out at least once a week I get really fidgety and feel like I missed an opportunity that I can never get back. I have to take pictures once a week, even if the images are rubbish.
They can’t all be perfect days…. Great advice to get out anyway! Looks like you made good use of it. Carry on and thanks for sharing your time with us.
This really is superb, I don't mind the crummy weather but can struggle to find something to take pics of however you have given me some good ideals, thank you
Thank you for this video and a few awesome ideas on what to do on a dull day! My absolute fav from this video is the tunnel shot, but closely followed by the peeling paint and the 3 minute exposure. I need to put my 10 stop to work more often. And it's great to suddenly see you in such an uncommon environment as indoors and while you might feel akward talking to the camera with people around it doesn't carry over to the video!
Nice one Tom, for the inspiration! I shall be out with my camera this weekend!… Just a thought or perhaps an idea for a future video… is the opposite to today’s video… instead of high key and light, what about low key and no light… ie like a star scape from a landscape location, you know get some stars and night scapes… it’d be interesting to see your take on it, applying your thoughts and style to it… I think it would work well with some snow covered mountains so they stand out or perhaps as well a calm lake for a reflection. Just a thought anyway and keep up the good work, love ya videos! 👍🏻 Matt
Really enjoyed this video, even saved it! I think in the area I live in we have this type of weather 80 % (or more) of the time. Having seen your video I got a little more enthusiastic about this weather and I’ll start to look at possible locations to go to. Thank you for the tips, really helpful!
To be honest Tom I looked at the thumbnail and saw 5 creative blah blah blah........I felt so unmoved to watch it. Of course I should have known better. Boy oh boy what a super video and great images!!! I most certainly would have walked past the life ring without giving it a second thought, loved the tunnel and boatyard shots too; top notch stuff.
I suspect out of all your videos (although some might be down to editing) this is the one you took the most photographs (if I did hear burst mode on the sea front). As it's grey and raining here just for a change - some good ideas to try.
Fantastic photo's, Thomas! And a very recommendable video for situations, where we after seeing you creatively handling this weather type, should just go out. I put the five idea's in my notes and look out for the first bad weather occasion, though it now seems to become spring time. Also good to go out! Thanks and greating, Bert. (abstract flower compositions I have tried before succesfully).
Margery, there's a strange man in the garden photographing those old boats' flaking paint, again.
Best video i have watched in years to give inspiration. Living in Scotland we get a lot of "dull damp nothingness" Today is another of those days, you have however inspired me to get off my backside and get out and do something. Thank you...
Back to the old Heaton, congratulations, you've found yourself again 👏🏻

Sure you’ve already thought of this, but the fairy pools are best in those conditions!
You can't go wrong in Skye!! The moodier the better I say
Haha, I feel like it's been this way for 2 months.
@@RossMDavidsonthank you for the thought. Tried there earlier in the week, ironically quite dry!
Thank you 🙏🏻 👍🏻
Yep, it's almost guaranteed 😂
Thanks for all the tips. Beautiful shots! My favourite was the minimalist photo around 13:30
i absolutly love shooting in conditions that's challenging it can only make you better photographer and make you realy get intament with your creative prosses .
If I had that awesome landscape I wouldn't mind the weather either. Great pictures
4:39 the Bicyclist riding out of the pedestrian tunnel is brilliant
I believe the life-ring is the best capture you've done so far this year, to-date. That was really something.
This is what we want!! Reality for those of us who can't jet off to exotic places with interesting weather.
Totally. I love the exciting travel videos, but it's just as valuable to be grounded when the weather is as dreary as this.
Excellent video, gives me lots ideas to photograph and gives me the kick up the proverbial to get me out into our wonderful British summer weather!
Those underground images in Budapest are awesome - I great change of direction - more please ?
Brilliant ideas. Proof that there is always something you just have to think laterally. Thank you.
Hello Thomas :) Always good info on your channel. Thank you for sharing! Btw which tripod head are you using?
You never disappoint Thomas, you always produce images that i love every time.
Great video and thanks for the code, I've just ordered the same book😁
Bad weather can make great pictures.
I love foggy, snowy, frosty, and super sunny days.
Maybe motion blur of the twig in front of the black fiberglass could produce an interesting photograph.
Thanks for all your inspirational videos!
I recently took my camera and tripod up onto the South Lancashire moors on a very wet and misty day and came home with some very satisfying, moody, misty monochromes. Now I look forward to that kind of weather.
Your last photo is to me, by far the best. Thanks from Canada.
Wow, thanks. I had no idea how that 3min exposure would turn out.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Well it did and it's a wonderful and powerful image. Thanks Thomas.
I'm an aspiring photographer and from watching a fair amount of your videos you've inspired me to be more creative with my photos and the different compositions I use! Love the videos ❤
Great to hear. Glad you enjoyed this one 👍
i did thank you @@ThomasHeatonPhoto
Love the life ring shot
Great shots, great tips, thanx.

Even without the audio, that's a great opening scene - and kudos to the Wardrobe Dept. too.
The black and white water fall is my favorite, then the last seascape.
The timing is perfect! I have an upcoming trip to a famously weather-challenged island. If I’m lucky enough to get good days, great, but I don’t want to waste any bad days thinking there’s nothing to shoot.
Starting to lighten up near me now but it's been drab and rainy for weeks so these are very appropriately timed tips.
Haha, that's why I made this video. Week after week of greyness 😕
The person at 2:45, their smile after getting the video was so so sweet! I love this vid Thomas, inspiration for when i have nothing to shoot :)
Wow, great photos from a man having fun and enjoying himself, excellent 👍
I love that you use square format a lot. It’s always been my favourite crop ratio as it is often more challenging to shoot. Thanks for the tip on the guide book, heading that way to get one, or two or…
Your enthusiasm is so infectious it makes we want to charge outside with my camera and have a great time. Thanks as always for your great videos!
Truly excellent Thomas. Very motivational too.
Hey Heaton, you should consider doing more street photography. Landscape in the winter and street in the summer. High contrast full sun is great for street.
Agree on the Budapest stations. All different colours. Very cool to photograph. Must go back one day 👍
Thanks for the video. It’s cold and drizzly here in Wisconsin in the middle of march. But I’m off on a Monday and soon I’ll be heading out with my camera to see what the work has to show me.
Awesome suggestions, I like shooting on rainy days, it can be peaceful and some of the light is amazing!
The last seascape took my breath away! Thank you for this different video full of ideas for ‘nothing weather’ which we have endured for so long. I am going to South Uist soon and you have given me lots of ideas to go out even when the weather is nothing.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you have a good trip. I'm hoping to get up that way myself soon 👍
Love how high-level your tips always are! In the sense that it could be applied regardless of what "type" of bad weather there is
If you like tunnels, one of the best to photograph is the Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg. The St. Pauli area is a great area to photograph and if you travel northwards along the river there are some great landscapes as well. An opportunity to practice architecture in landscape photography.
Holy Island, Pedestrian Tunnel, Whitley Bay on a grey day.. I love it when you do local. Great stuff !
Good stuff. One part reminded me of a saying that my boss hates “because that is how it has been done”
Budapest has some incredible character for interesting images. You're making me want to go back with your photos of the underground!
Im a beginner youtuber for fishing and nature photography etc but you're inspiring me to try Landscapes and minimalist images. That last image of the post and pier was truelly stunning. Thanks Thomas 💙

Thomas, my favorite was the b&w of the waterfall but the b&w of the post with the pier in the distant background was a very close second. I admire your enthusiasm and creativity.
Thanks a lot. The post & pier shot came out better than I had hoped. It was a bit of a shot in the dark.
Great video Thomas! Some years a go I saw a photo of a black and white image of a landscape with the foreground having some flowers in color. It was then I realized the value of using the contrast of color on a somewhat dreary day.
Well done on doing grim grim grim. The black and white images are superb, and I really liked the paint patterns on the old boats. Many thanks.
This was a great combination of on location travel shooting and useful tips.
These are my favorite conditions, for all the reasons you mention. Love this kind of photos.
The 3min exposure of the pillar and the sea bridge in the background is awesome! Really need to play around more with my ND filters.
Loved the tunnel image amd the mono waterfall and final inage Thomas. Any day to be out with the camera is still a good day in my book.
I love your photos, minimalist photography is perfect for hazy weather
Loved that - just the inspiration I needed when the weather has been so rubbish for so long…
So long!!! What's going on? I haven't seen the sun for weeks and weeks.
Excellent video Tom, I would suggest even in good conditions, look for similar subjects around you, don’t just focus on shooting the landscape
wow. I always learn something new and fun from your videos.

Thanks a lot, I'm glad to hear it, and I couldn't agree more that there's always something to shoot when you have a camera in hand.
That last B&W image looks so eerie, like a zombie scene. Great shot!
Buckets of inspiration.
Thanks 👍🇬🇧🙂
As someone living in a grey Northern seaside town, this video was exceptionally helpful! thank you!
Thanks Tom, I'm from your area and can't drive or walk too far, this book will help me with some nice locations, and great discount 😊
Have fun, there are some nice little gems in that book.
I really like the picture of the waterfall! Beautiful!
Watching your videos is always relaxing. You are truly inspiring. 💖
Thank you so much. That's nice to hear.
What a great set of reminders! Wish we had some tunnels like that in our town.
Great tips for dull winter conditions - I can relate. Thanks for sharing!

Ah yes, I remember the PNW. It rained every day 😂 But, those old growth forests were incredible.
It's always a pleasure to watch your RUclips videos Thomas. Lots of enthusiasm for photography and nature. Very inspiring. Thanks!

I’m definitely one of those people who see the weather like this video and choose to remain in the comfort of me home. 😅😎👊🙏
Tom, a shot of that boat named "Moody" behind you would have been a pretty great one in the old harbor on a day like this!

Just ordered the book with the discount. Thanks Tom. I'm near Alnmouth, so very handy!😊
Thank you! I get more inspired and also learning more from this type of video then viewing a video from a remote location like Mongolia 🙂

Good ideas all. Carry on. 👍🥂

1 Question 1 Comment. The comment. Your enthusiasm is quite infectious. The Question. Why do you use such a tall tripod for much of your work? Cheers.
Thanks for your comment. I like a tall tripod because I like to shoot at eye level. I do occasionally drop down, such as the final image.
wow Howdon my old home town crazy never thought a would see you there.

Really liked the life saver ring and wave over image. Thanks for the video.
11:02 this is pretty incredible! :)
Looks just like the conditions I had on my last astro road trip lol great long exposures!
