How To Replace a Starter 2006 Honda Odyssey -EricTheCarGuy

- In this video I replace the starter on a 2006 Honda Odyssey. It's not that bad a job, you don't even have to lift the vehicle. There are a few tips in this one you'll find useful however, like the warnings about the radio and navigation codes. If you don't have these a simple starter job can turn into a quite ride while using a fold up map to find out where you're going. Just in case I also made a video on how to retrieve a navigation code should you not be able to find yours, link to that below. As always, I hope you find this information useful and entertaining.

8 Years later and Eric still keeps me going with my own car repairs. Thank to this video I was able to replace my starter within 2 hours from start to finish. Thanks again Eric.
Really like that you don't skip removing fasteners, often the hardest part for me. Thank you.
Eric, My 2005 Odyssey stranded my wife last night. Watched your video while waiting for AAA to send the tow truck to take the van home. Got to AutoZone at 7:30 this morning when they opened. Bought a starter and borrowed a breaker bar from them ($25 refundable deposit!). Gathered up my other tools based on your video and was done in about 90 minutes.
Great video. Clear instructions and hints (bend that tab on the battery tray!) made the whole job go smoothly.
THANKS! Tom
10yrs later..your video is STILL helping people. Thanks bro!!😃
Thanks a lot for the video, bought starter on Ebay $67, replaced and running fine. Saved big bucks. Local dealer asked $550. Subscribed. You are the best.
Liqiang Ni I found a $55 model on Amazon for my 04.
Removing the bottom bolt was the biggest challenge
Thank you for this video. The starter on our 06 Odyssey went out Friday, and Sunday I was able to remove/replace it Sunday thanks to this video. As you and others have said, that bottom bolt on the starter is no joke. I probably spent more time dealing with a broken socket extension than with the starter work.
There's no telling how much money you saved me, and I hope you make 5 times that back from clicks and ad revenue.
Thank you very much! You saved me $250 in labor cost. I bought a starter online for $85, watched your video a few times, and almost exactly two hours later...fixed and running. I am not a mechanic, but after successfully completing this simple job I will certainly try more wrenching in the future. The only tool I wish I had would be a ratcheting wrench for that hard to reach bolt. My Oddy has 178K miles and this is the 2nd replacement starter.
Thanks so much for this clear video. I was suddenly stranded in the parking lot of Advance Auto with a no start starter on a Sunday afternoon at 4 pm: watched this video once through, bought a new starter and a few tools and drove away just over 2 hours later!
If I walked into a repair shop and saw EricTheCarGuy will to work on my car, I would be ecstatic. Nothing would make me happier than seeing my car featured in one of your videos for all to see. You are an honest mechanic and it would be an honor for you to work on my vehicle. Keep up the good videos and STAY DIRTY!
Many thanks for the excellent guide. It ended up taking me three hours to replace our starter just now, but about 45 minutes of that was trying to break loose the bottom bolt on the starter, which had rusted tight, and I had no breaker bar. I thought for awhile there that I was going to be putting off the second half of the operation while I took a bus to and from the nearest store I could get one, but some kludging with a broom handle ended up saving the day. This is the second video of yours I've used to replace something at home, and I anticipate more to come.
Just changed my first starter successfully, thanks to your well done video. A special thanks to descent lighting and good edits. That's what really makes your videos stand apart.
Man this video and your other related videos to no start, no crank were just heroic and saved me tons of $$. Thank you for the thorough explanations and not skipping through parts. And thank you for the video!
Eric, thank you for this, I just did my starter today on my 2007 Honda odyssey touring.
2 things I want to point out to others is:
1. Everything Eric said needs to be taken out of the way, does in fact need to be removed.... Don't try to skip any of it because it will just take longer... Trust me on this...
And number 2 is the 2007 models and later have a different starter and different connections that are harder to get to.... However everything else is that same.
I'll
Thank you Eric. Just replaced the starter in our 2006 Odyssey thanks to you. I ended up taking the left front wheel off to get to those two bottom bolts on battery tray. Thank you for the excellent content.
Thanks again! This took about one hour to remove and about 1/2 hour to replace. The crux of this job is being able to get sufficient torque on those starter hold-down bolts. I have a 3 ft pipe that slips over my ratchet so it will either break the bolt loose or break the ratchet.
This is a great thing. I'd like to start a helpful series of videos, but nobody needs to know how to build lasers or cut your finger-tips off in a table saw!
Great video! Super helpful and clear. I am not all that mechanically inclined and this job was a little bit outside of my comfort zone but this video gave me the confidence to do it.
Due to your video, I was able to change the starter on my wifes van for the first time last night. And it was easy, all thanks to your video. Job well done on your part sir.
May God bless you and protect you in everything that you do Eric!! You're an inspiration to all of us poor broke wanna be Joe Schmo mechanic man, them car garage shops out there are nothing but thieves, they're going to hate on you Eric by saying that you are taking their jobs away from them by posting auto repair videos like this on RUclips and guess what? Between parts and labor, that was a good $750+ job too and you're putting it right back in our pockets and l LOVE IT.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video; I followed it step by step and the wife's van fired right up when I was all done. Cheers Eric!
Paid $70 for the starter and did it in less than an hour, thank u so much!!! much appreciated...
Best 1 handed mechanic I have ever seen thanks for the great view
Eric, you're a real pro! This is one of the best technically-oriented videos I've watched. You are thorough, informative, articulate....generally excellent. I'm subscribing to your channel straight away. I thought my wife's 99 Odyssey needed a neutral safety switch because I could get the van to start by wiggling the gear selector. I installed the neutral safety switch and it worked....for about 12 hours. Then it became obvious something else was wrong. Wish I would have watched this before getting shafted by the local Honda dealer. Ouch!
dude. you and this video helped me save over $600 vs what the dealer was going to charge me. thanks you!!!
I replaced my starter like a pro after watching this video. Thanks Eric!
man. you save me a lot of money. dealership wanted $850 dollars to replace the starter, I bough the starter myself and I installed by myself following your steps. thanks. I only spent $130 dollars including some tools that I needed.
Awesome video that made this job so much easier...thank you Eric! The only trouble I experienced was my lack of tools and had to improvise. Make sure you have a long wrench for the low bolt on the battery mount and some socket wrench extensions to make everything quick. Just watch the video and make sure you have the same tools Eric is using or something close. Thank you again for making this video, great details and tips!!
Subscribed! Thanks a heck of a ton for this video! I may just be getting better, but this video helped tremendously. watched it, got my tools, got to work and finished the smoothest repair I've ever done!
I get so excited when I see a new ETCG video pop up!
Fantastic as usual Eric!
I watch your video and fixed my starter.
feel so good.
Thank you very much man.
Thanks for this video Eric; this repair pushed my comfort zone but your video helped make it a success
Zenkiu Erick thank you I love yours videos, muy professionals.Iam retired and I learning from all of you guy's.This videos are for people like me not for mechanic and you do the complete job.God bless you.
Thanks, Eric! Just replaced the starter on my 2006 Odyssey today. Your video was a lifesaver. I agree with another comment... showing the removal of all the fasteners was critical for my success. Had to go buy a breaker bar for those 17mm bolts, but other than that, it went pretty well, all considered!
Thank You for posting this video! Very helpful, great details. Got the job done a whole lot quicker and with less frustration thanks to this video.
Always love your videos!!! Your advice about bending tab down to get intake flume out to get access to battery tray bolts saved me 40 mins wrestling under the car. Keep up good work! TomP.
This was exactly the video I needed! I watched it a couple times, made notes along the way for steps, and just finished replacing my starter. No surprises, except finding out that my loaned out 3/8" socket wrench & extension was never returned, but what's an automotive project without the purchase of an additional tool right?
Great video, much appreciated!
Appreciate you taking the time out to post this, you saved me alot of time and some money. Mahalo from hawaii bruda
Eric....thank you thank you thank you...after breaking down in a parking lot of Toy R Us with my kids and wife...I watched your video while waiting for AAA. Since you did the exact vehicle I have it was something i had to try. I won't lie. Without your video it would not have been possible. The bending down the metal flap..."its just metal", lol I would have stopped there if it weren't for your thorough video. It still took me two hours to do it, bug mainly because I kept referencing your video and I broke a tool and went out to bbuy a breaker bar since I ddidn't follow that advice of your earlier...again, thank you you are legitimate. Great video.
Everything was spot on. Thank you so much for this video. I replaced the starter on our 05 Odyssey.
"push with an open hand". I learned something new today that I will use for the rest of my life.
Kento Wakai i wish he said that at the beginning lol I clipped my knuckles on the battery tray step
Awesome video Eric! Replaced my starter yesterday without any problems. Thank you very much my friend.
Your video's are sooo thorough You are a credit to your profession. I agree with a previous comment. The bolts holding on the starter are scary tight. My cheater bar (pipe) was 3 foot long and I barely broke the bolts loose.
This video made the starter replacement a breeze. Thank you
Thank you Eric for all of your videos i learn a lot.
you're the best! bought a starter and did it myself as well, thanks to this video! you're the man!
I just spent 4 hours looking your awesome and helpful videos! Thanks for all the great videos!
Thank EricTheCarGuy very much. It saved me lots of money!
Haha! First try, 2 hours. Hardest part was the bolts on the starter. Breaker bar required. Snapped a 3/8th extension bar, but started with conviction. Very satisfying. Thank you very much for your help. No skin grafts needed with the open hand technique.
I snapped my extension too. Thank goodness for a lifetime warranty on Harbor Freight tools...
I just replaced the starter on my 2005 Odyssey thanks to this video. Thanks for posting this!
Excellent video. Thorough and well shot. Plus many good tips. Thanks!
Dude, Awesome! Thanks man, this guided me from start to finish, and it worked!!!! Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Eric, you do fantastic work! Thank you for saving me hundreds of dollars!!!
Thank you. Watched your video and followed your instructions and I was able to install the starter on my own.
Great Video, made the job so much easier, thank you for your time in putting this together.
Thank you! I successfully changed my starter in my car solely because of this video and a bit frugal stubbornness! Much appreciated!
Eric, you are awesome. You are the man. All of these unintelligent people commenting on your RUclips videos are just giving you more points in the RUclips algorithm. The more they post their simple-minded comments the more exposure your videos achieve. Keep the videos coming so these idiots can help you out, help you pays your bills. Seriously, thank you for all that you do. I consider you a modern day Robin Hood.
Thanks for the video, helped me out trying to get the battery metal support out. Was getting frustrated and got on youtube and saved again, wife got her van back and is happy! The bottom bolt on the starter was a bear to loosen though, and I had to use my 18" breaker with some brute force, other than that, was a breeze! Thanks again.
Thank you very much Sir Eric. I have learned so much from your videos. You are the best.
You saved the day for me once again. I saved at least $345 dollars by doing the work myself. THANK YOU!
Thank you for this video...I would not have attempted this without it....Bought this Honda new. 168,000 miles & still going strong.
Thank you Eric, for all of your videos.
Thank you, your video was very helpful. Did the job easier than I thought, thanks to you.
Eric,
Thank You for this video!!! This video was exactly the correct one for my 2005 Honda Odyssey with 91,000 miles on it.
You saved us about $500- the dealer wanted to charge us $600 for the entire replacement. I replaced it with a re-manufactured starter with a lifetime warranty. I would like to mention (like you said) that the removal of the bottom bolt on that starter (17mm) was a $%##!!! Had to use a 3' cheater to break it loose. Other than that, everything went exactly as it shows. We even had to put in the radio code and it worked perfectly.
Thanks Again!!
Annette Holland it's an awesome feeling doing it yourself and saving a nice chunk of change.mi was quoted $800 to replace my front control arm bushes and tie rods.
Ended up replacing all of the bushings up front, and inner and outer tie rod ends (not just the control arm bushings) for much less
Great instructional video on starter R&R. It was useful and entertaining. Thank you.
You. Are. Amazing.
Going to try this this weekend, thank you so much!
Thx so much for every detail u put in this video. I changed out the starter in a few hours thx to you.
Thanks. Good camera angles. Very helpful. Not replacing the starter, but needed to know how to access the positive cable to starter from below. (Keys only fit ignition, not door locks, so fob is the only way into the vehicle - but the battery drained last night so I need to momentarily "boost" the car to get the remote control receiver powered to recognize the fob unlock command and pop the doors. Then, I'll be in and able to pop the hood. What a PITA.)
just did tonight. thank you. Awesome! The 2 17mm bolts were the hardest part. Tight!
Eric, great job as usual. The statement "easier said than done" was more than prophetic. Frankly, it kicked my butt. The one, lower, rear most bolt stressed my Navy trained vocabulary. Finally got the tray out then managed to break my 3/8th drive extension trying to get the top 17mm mounting bolt out. If I had to do it again I would have 1) purchased a long 12mm wrench such as the one you used (to use on bolt above). 2) had 1/2 inch drive extensions on hand and 3) purchased a better quality starter (not CARQUEST) considering the level of effort to change this puppy out. Considering the effort, I see why the dealers/mechanics get some coin to do this job. Thank you for the video!
Thanks Eric. This worked perfectly. I appreciate it.
Thanks for sharing this Video very easy to understand and Do..Having this Problem with my 2006 Honda Odyssey..
Thanks for this. Helped me get the job done!
Thanks for the video Eric. I just changed the starter motor. Piece of cake after watching the video!
Got me through my starter replacement, including that damn bottom bolt. Much appreciated.
Stay dirty! 30 minutes and I am ready to go! Attacking the starter on my Acura CL. I love how you explain the tools and why you use them. I am slowly building my tool collection with each video!
Thank you! Your depictions were spot on.
Thank you for the video. Replaced starter on 2005 Odyssey today, followed the instructions to a T, except had to come at the back battery tray bolt from underneath, as there was no room to maneuver a wrench up top.
Great video and very informative... just changed the starter on an 06 odyssey and I must say the hardest part was the battery tray removal. Other than that it went pretty smooth... thanks again
Wow
Thank you for your incentive …by minute 9 and I already wanted to give up 🌈
Job done. You saved me a fortune. Thank you!
Great video! Helped out a lot! Thanks to you and other like you guiding me.
P.S. the support that the battery sits on is a real pain!
Another great video! Thanks for all the help!
Great info Eric. Thank you.
I replaced starter in 2006 Odyssey this video is very helpful.
good job eric.you are great teacher
Very informative & helpful video, Thank you!!!!
Really well done! thanks for sharing socket sizes and tips along the way. In absence of torque wrench, maybe you can share how much to turn after screws make contact.
Awesome job on video Eric! This worked on my 2005 Odyssey also and saved me $175 labor that my mechanic wanted. I got the top starter bolt out with my impact but the bottom one wouldn't budge even with impact. Had to use my 1/2" ratchet and a 3' pipe on the handle for leverage to get it to crack loose. Finished it in about 3hrs ....would've taken the day with your video so thanks again and......Stay Dirty! :-) PS....You might want to pick up some of the Black latex gloves from Harbor Freight. They're cheap enough and being like 8-9mil., they don't tear as easily as the white ones used in you're video's.
great video. took me ~2.5 hours, including the trip to the store to buy the starter, and two trips to the neighbor to borrow some tools....
I didn't remove the air box and the tray came out pretty easy. Well, easy relative. I agree it is ridiculous overkill mounting of a battery tray.
Thank you, walked me through the install!
GREAT video. My 2006 was slightly different from the video but still got it done. Took a while, longer than Eric I am sure
A quick fact. Only the radios with navigation had a code. Regular radios did not have or need a code.
Outstanding video and great attention to detail. Thanks a lot for the time you took to put these videos out for us.
I'm the original owner of a '06 Touring which doesn't have NAV, but does have a 5 digit code. ✌️
Yeah, I've got an 06 without nav and it most certainly does require a code.
Dear Erik, a good alternative than grease on terminals is to coat it from outside (after tightening) with Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Please rebuild the old starter as all it needs is only cleaning or replacing a copper piece in the solenoid only + cleaning the armature contact grooves + re-greasing the motor bearings and solenoid arm and it became as new. Thanks you Erik for such an informative video as always.
Great, very helpful video thanks!!!
very well-done video. I feel like I can tackle this.
Thanks Eric it helps a lot.
Very good video, Eric. You explained everything, and that's what we (the amateurs and DIY'ers) need. Thank you!
By the way, I loved your "poker face" at 27:19 xD
Love you Eric thank you for this great video you save me a lot of $$$$!!!
Because of this video, I was able to fix my starter myself. I really appreciate this video tremendously. I always tell my friends to watch your channels first. Please add a Patreon account to your RUclips Channel, I would love to toss you some money for your work.
Wow, Eric. Thank you for these videos.
great video eric
Excellent thorough vid, the devil is often in the details. Thanks for posting this!
