  • In this video I'll show you how to replace a starter on an 05 Honda Odyssey 3.5L Touring. The video will take you step by step in the process of replacing the starter. Its a pretty simple job and should not take an enormous amount of time to complete. It is definitely a DIY kind of job.
Note: As mentioned in the video, the negative battery cable should be removed first before doing anything else to the vehicle. I did get ahead of myself by skipping this step at the beginning of the video.
As mentioned the family and I where on our way to church one Sunday. We stopped in a a gas station to get some drinks on the way and when it was time to leave the van would not start. I had it towed back to the house. At first I wasn't going to make a video because I didn't have my "good" tools at the house. But, I could not pass up this opportunity.

I found it easier to remove the air filter housing without removing the intake hose. I was able to remove the lower front battery tray bolt without going under the car. I used a 3/8 ratchet with a LONG extension instead. Also the rear battery tray bolts go in slots, rather than holes, so you don't have to remove the lower rear battery tray bolt - just loosen it a turn or two.

I had an intermittent starting issue with my Odyssey. It would start, then go back to clicking when I attempted to start the van. Took the starter to get tested and was told it works, but is weak. So I bought a new one while I was there. Installed the starter with your video. Very good step by step instructions from beginning to end. THANK YOU 👍 👌

Oh and as far as getting to the one battery tray bolt. I lost a lot of religion on this one but once I removed all the other bolts I was able to manipulate the tray and removed the plastic part in front of tray (breathing tubes or something) and bolt was right there easy peasy!! Thanks again

This video helped sooo sooo sooo much. Thank you. I was able to get the starter off without taking off the orange clip thingy I accidentally broke it try to take it off. 🤦🏻‍♀️ the battery holder is definitely the hardest part in this whole process. But man I feel so empowered. Thank you so much for this video. 💗

My bolts for my battery shelf that connect to frame will not screw back in. They won’t catch the threads on the frame. Suggestions.

How did you remove the bolts that hold on the starter? Did you have to use a breaker bar or some type of electric gun?

Great video, just wish you would go the extra mile and provide torque specs. It’s not like you’d be making them up, I’m sure you have to use them to install the equipment yourself so why not share? Thx again

I didn’t actually torque anything with a torque wrench. I usually don’t for things like this. I didn’t need a manual for this. Thanks for the compliment though. Hope your project goes well.
