Good morning Jamie. Beautifully done friend. I bet you have footage that no one else has. I never realized Port Clinton was so close to Delaware Valley. I always thought it was further north. Many life times ago I walked right through Port Clinton on the Appalachian Trail. Who knew? I also saw it's 74° there right now. Sounds wonderful. I hope you're doing well and having a great day so far friend.
Good afternoon, Dennis! That's awesome that you've passed through Port Clinton on the AT before. Nowadays the trail actually cuts through the rail yard. Most times when I'm out there, I see hikers passing through which is cool. It's only about 1/2 hour north of Reading, so definitely closer to the Delaware Valley than most of the railroad's territory. I'm enjoying another lovely day of temperatures in the 70s and low humidity today. We've got one more like that before a heat wave that will last most of next week. Hope you're doing well too!
Awesome video Jamie! That’s pretty cool how quick the fire caught on everything after it was lit. And super neat to actually hear noise from the water boiling on the second day; usually you can’t hear anything like that when they are operating the locomotive because of the dynamo or just the stack. Very cool though! Looking forward to the other one in the future 🚂💙💙
Thanks so much, Collin! It was an amazing experience being thereto see her fired up, and then to return the next day to see and hear how things were going. Glad you enjoyed it!
Good afternoon Dennis! TGIF! Got a weekend packed with action, though amazingly not all of it is trains. Hope you're doing well too and have a fun weekend planned.
Some reason I never got notified of this, but saw it with your newest notification. That was very interesting to see and glad your job is allowing you special perks like this. Congratulations on how well the video is doing as well.
Glad you got to see this even without the notification. I've been thrilled with the access I have now the I work for the railroad. It has been a good arrangement for all of us!
You guys at RBM&N did an amazing job of getting that beast as straight as humanly possible while retaining the imperfect steam engine cowling look. I was very skeptical of the choice to use gloss paint. I was 100% wrong. It's absolutely Beautiful. And the waves just add character.
I was actually there at the Reading outer station in that shit. You can kinda see me towards the end on the right. It was my first time ever seeing 2102 that day and I couldn’t have been happier
Well Jamie that reminded me as a kid starting our coal furnace at home throwing in scraps of wood and paper to get the fire started. Cool video. What an awesome locomotive. Got her twice on the last run. Milino and Shoemakersville. Cool video. I just saw an up date on the 2100 they are working on it and i heard it will be converted to an oil burner. I wish they weren't converting it to oil but seeing it back on the tracks again will be awesome. They said if all possible they will try to get together with the 2102 for a double header.
Thanks, Michael! Really glad you got to see 2102 in action. I'm definitely hoping for that doubleheader with 2100 as well. I'm disappointed about 2100's conversion to burning oil, though it sounds like that's necessary to travel to other railroads.
We were on the 8/13 trip and saw you shooting video as we left Lower Reading station. Got to talk to Andy twice that day. We missed you at the end of the trip. You were busy with other railfans.
Hi Jamie. I have seen many excellent videos from your channel but this one is THE VIDEO!! Hahahaha. The fire lighting in a steam loco is a beatifull procces. In this case it is been awesome. Have you made some video making fire lighting at # 425? If not it should be nice to see. Cheers and thanks for this epic video!
Thanks so much, Claudio! I've been wanting to make this video for a long time, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I definitely want to do a similar video for 425, but that will have to wait a while until she is back in service. She's down for a major overhaul right now, and won't be back until next year at the earliest.
@@JamieMakin Waiting for the 425 is a pleasure time if it will be alive as a young girl such as I am sure that overhaul will be ended. I will be waiting too. Cheers and do not stop enjoying those oportunities.
@JamieMakin I know someone asked how long it takes to fire up 2102 and 425 not to mix railroads but up said that ed and his team fire up 844 and big boy 4014 a week to warm up and cool down from a trip
@@raymondchason2877 cool info on the UP engines, thanks! The slower the process, the less risk of damaging something in the expansion or contraction phases.
I had no idea it took this long to prepare a steam locomotive for a run. How long will the engine remain running before the next time it needs another 3 days? Awesome video!
It's definitely best to bring the steam locomotives up to temperature gradually to ensure nothing gets over-stressed in the process. All of this work goes into preparing the locomotive for just one day of running. They'll shut her down as soon as she gets back to the steam shop after the excursion.
Jeez 3 days to fire her up but I’m pretty sure it dosnt take this long usually it would just take 6 hours for her right? Also cant wait to see her run this summer
From what I understand it's better to raise the temperature slowly to avoid potential damage to the parts if things heat up and expand too quickly. They probably could do it quicker, but might not be worth the risk.
They've got 425 pretty well taken apart, but keeping 2102 going for this year's excursions are their priority. Hoping to get back there to film more of 425 and learn about the progress after "busy season." From what I heard it's going well though.
Ohhhhhh, Andy's b-day is august 13th? Same day as my late wife's😔 and the (late) very dishonorable Fidel Castro 😲😱❗I spent saturday the 12th at the Illinois Railway Museum with family and friends, saw a lot of impressive diesel locomotives in operation, as it was "Diesel Days" weekend there, and also the 70th anniversary of the IRM's founding.
Interesting to hear Andy shares a birthday with your late wife, but so sorry for your loss of your wife. Glad you had a fun day though at the Illinois Railway Museum.
@@JamieMakin yeah, i used to razz her about sharing her b-day with Fidel Castro, and i got dirty looks in return. I share mine with the guy that invented asphalt, its as cheap a paving product as it gets, and doesnt hold up very well in constantly changing weather conditions.

No stoker on 425, the crew has to shovel the coal in.
thank you Jamie. that was a really cool video to watch.. takes a bit of time to wake that beast up
Thanks so much, Sparky! Hope you're doing well!
Very well done Jamie! So interesting to see the modern replacement parts intertwined with older. Thanks for the behind the scenes footage. Stay safe.
Thanks so much, Kevin! It's amazing to see how new the locomotive looks and feels, yet it's got such history behind it.

Wow, I love that engine. Thank you for the video, Jamie.

Thank you for this video. I wanted to see the procedure for a long time. It appears to take about 2 days to get 2102 ready to roll. Awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it! I've been wanting to catch this myself for a long time too.
Awesome behind the scenes look Jamie.
Thanks Calvin!
awesome video jamie, from start to finish. keep making more of these behind the scenes videos when you can. this is great stuff.

In I believe 1991 the 2102 was in Lansdale, Pa. I got to visit her cab. See inside her firebox. Her fire was just smoldering. And blow her whistle. 🚂😊
