I’m sure I’m in the minority but here’s my opinion anyway. I think this song is a masterpiece. The lyrics and music place it among my all-time favorite songs. I think the video is also a masterpiece but I don’t think it belongs with this song. When I tell people how amazing this song is I have them watch tiny desk, not this video, because these visuals are a complete distraction from how great the lyrics are. Both the song lyrics and the video tell very strong narrative stories and those two stories don’t synch at all. I think this video would’ve worked better with Red Wine Supernova. I can picture the siren coming out of the water to the first verse and biting the popsicle on “put her canine teeth in the side of my neck”.

@@luvrastro2090I just watched this reaction again. This song is what I consider to be one of the greatest lyrical songs of all time. It’s easily in my top three songs with completely perfect lyrics. This reactors first reaction to this song is to spend the entire time talking over the lyrics wondering how long the siren can be out of water, worrying about the siren pulling her into the water, whether the siren was going to come back, how nicely the room was decorated, and how Chappell took down the home sign. He barely paid any attention to the greatest lyrics of all time because he was so distracted by the video. That’s a problem for me. These lyrics deserve complete attention. That’s why I think the tiny desk performance is the best way to first experience this song. You get the full emotion of Chappell’s performance without being distracted away from the lyrics.
@@jabecker21 so because this guy has the attention span of a fork everyone does?😭 first time i heard the song i watched the mv with it and the music video is literally just an extended metaphor that very clearly matches the lyrics. if distraction is your problem then fine, say that. don’t say the video and the lyrics are fully detached because they aren’t😭
@@luvrastro2090 not everyone does but I think a lot of people do. Aside from the general concept of a casual relationship the lyrics and video are completely detached. The lyrics are a very literal story and the video is a very literal story. Name one line of the lyrics that are actually portrayed in the video.
