Úžasná hudba k pohádce Raduz a Mahulena, vyloženě dramatické i láskyplné podbarvení děje. Dnes když slyším této symfonické věty, slyším i slova úvodu " Jsem pohádka, kdo zamnou půjde....., v té době třiadvacetiletý Josef Suk, velmi zamilovaný a dojatý svou budoucí ženou Otylkou vytvořil v tomto svém třináctém opusu dílo plné úžasné vroucí melodiky a také napětí a tajemného děje.

I occasionally search through what can be found of Josef Suk's recorded music and often become elated over such, often, exquisite workmanship. His legacy of those pieces I find especially inspired and inspiring amounts to some really great creations, no matter whether in small forms or larger ones.

The plaintive love theme heard in the first movement, then again at the finale, is a beautiful effort to portray love in simple, sweet, unconditional happiness. It must be a true love, to triumph over evil, whether from magic or from human sources.

A symphony I'm in is playing this. With the transposing involved, it's been more fun to listen to it than to play. Fortunately, the brass section does a lot more listening than playing anyway.
