      Hi, yes, at the time of the video (if I remember it well) the master function was not available in the Kemper.
      By the way, now the Kemper Stage can also work as an audio interface, therefore you can use it directly via USB

    I've been experimenting with how I record my Kemper stage. I like the sound of the S/PDIF output. (I run my S/PDIF cable into a ATLONA Digital Coaxial to Optical Toslink converter. From there I send out an optical cable to my Apollo, I have an x4 and an x8p. My question to you Leo is can I send a dry guitar sound out the S/PDIF port while also sending the FX only out my XLR left and Right. I have recorded using these 3 outputs simultaneously but currently they all contain FX.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr

      Good point and question! Unfortunately I don't have the answer....maybe you can ask directly to Kemper. This would be a very nice setup for recording...

      @@LeoGibsonGtrThanks for your reply. I figured it out. It can be done.In the OUTPUT menu just set S/PDIF output to any setting that has Git to the left of the slash. this will be S/PDIF sending dry guitar (DI) to the left S/PDIF output. The right can be Master mono or Git/ master left or Git/ Mod mono etc. Of course you can just use the left output of S/PDIF and not even open a track in your DAW for the right essentially muting whatever is being sent to the right of S/PDIF.

    Leo, how would we record a D.I dry signal out of the kemper stage? I would guess using a D.I box would still give out the signal with the amp/cab/effects, as i would use a D.i box with a modeler when playing live if the recording desk is very far away. I know the kemper stage DOES NOT have a “D.I OUT” and its USB doesnt pass audio (like you said), which i think is a massive bummer. But id like to know if theres a way to do this before considering even buying the stage. Thank you!

      For S/PDIF to work ideally in this scenario (if the audio interface is set to "internal") I think the Stage would need to be set to "auto", and have cable both going to and from the audio interface and Kemper.

    Thanks for your work, which gives a very good overview and some useful insight! I for my part didn't consider the quality aspect of using the SPDIF, thanks!
    But I think one thing is not correct or at least misleading: It is easily possible to record multiple guitar signals from the Kemper at once (in parallel) using the different output channels you described at the same time. This way you can record 1. the pure guitar signal (for reamping), 2. the dry stack (amp+cab), 3. the modulation effects and 4. the delay/reverb effects - all at once.
    This would be kind of the maximum recording setup which can certainly be scaled down to a more simple one in different ways. For example the SPDIF alone could send/record the dry guitar+the stack (stereo L/R).
    Check the "Kemper Profiler Tutorial - Output (Recording)" for a detailed description.

    How do you set the Kemper as the slave? All you did was just match the clocks. Is there a clock master/slave setting in the kemper? Also are you only running spdif out of the kemper to the spdif in on your interface? One cable only?

  • @davidletterboyz

    Thanks for the guide. Very useful for those who are looking to purchase a Kemper for recording.
    I have a question: 4:22
    What is the difference between running the Kemper device clock as Master or Slave? Does it affect the tone at all?

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  3 года назад +1

      Hi, thank you, I'm happy you found the guide useful!
      I would not enter into deep details: the clock is related to the ADA (analog to digital and digital to analog) conversion, the more precise is the clock the better and less jittering is the conversion. If your audio interface has a very good clock, it is better to set the Kemper as slave, and vice versa. So it affects the sound, and the master should be your audio interface, if it is an high level audio interface with best in class ADA converters, or vice versa
      Hope it helps.
      Thank you!

    Secondly I wanted to ask for your advice. I have a Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII Duo as an interface and I just bought the Kemper Profiler Stage. The UA Interace has 2 XLR inputs and also an Optical TOSLINK input. I use Final Cut Pro X as my DAW. Would you recommend I record using the 2 XLR inputs (I think the UA has a decent quality D/A Converter) or do you recommend that I use the S/PDIF out into a separate adapter that converts this signal into Optical TOSLINK (I'm not sure what high quality adapter to use. Amazon?).

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  4 года назад

      Hi, thank you so much! Your appreciation in my work is really important for me!
      As regards the better way to record the kemper with an Apollo, I would suggest the digital way...the converters are good, but basically if you use XRLs you are gonna convert the audio 3 times (guitar --> kemper (analog digital); kemper --> XLR (digital analog); Kemper --> UAD (analog digital), while going digital you convert the audio only once (guitar --> Kemper) as the Kemper is sending digital audio to the UAD and the UAD is sending digital audio to your DAW.
      I'm sorry but I don't have a SPDIF to ADAT converter so I can't suggest which one to buy...actually it's a good idea for a video 😊...but I think amazon is a good solution.
      Thank you once more!!!

    Hi Leo, thanks for this very instructive video, much appreciated.
    How would you say the sound quality would 'survive' using that Focusrite Clarett sound card through S/pdif? Does it come anywhere close to the sound we get using the headphones?
    I use an Edirol UA-5 (yes, it's rather old) which has S/pdif input but hte sound still is pretty bad compared to what I get directly using a good headset.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  3 года назад

      Thank you!
      If you use the spdif connection you transmit digital data from the Kemper to the audio interface, and then you record them in you DAW. As far as I know you can ruin them if you use your audio interface as a master clock and the clock of your audio interface is worser than the one of the Kemper. Then when you play back the recorded audio you are using the headphone connected to you audio interface (as far as I know): if your audio interface has not good DA conversion, you are gonna have a worser sound than the Kemper one.
      Hope this help

    • @shelovesdisco2153

      @@LeoGibsonGtr Thanks Leo,
      This is exactly the cas, the sound is very good through the hedphones directly on the Kemper, and quite bad from the Edirol UA-5 soundcard I'm using....would that Focusrite solve the problem?
      My question really is, how would you compare the sound quality cming from the Focusrite compared to the sound from the Kemper using a headset?

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  3 года назад

      Hi, there are two things that can cause the problem:
      >> the DA converters of the Edirol are worser than the one of the Kemper. I don't use Edirol audio interfaces so I don't know how they sound
      >> when you record the Kemper into the editor via spdif you are not synchronizing the clocks: I mean you have to define which one is the master of the clock and you have to be sure to use the exact kHz for both the Edirol and the Kemper (for instance 44.1 for both or 48 kHz for both)
      Thank you for your question

The s/pdif connection that says "IN" in kemper should be connected to the one that says s/pdif "IN" in my interface? or should be connected to the one that says s/pdif "out" in my interface?
    In other words, should i connect mi kemper stage to mi inteface by s/pdif connecting entry "IN" with "IN" and "out" with "out"?

    What kind of track do you open on logic to be able to record or get signal for guitar? Should I select audio or guitar/bass? If I select guitar/bass I have to use a logic amp which I don’t want so I’ve been selecting audio but can’t seem to get signal to logic from the kemper. I get signal from the kemper to the interface and through the speakers though. Please help! I can’t seem to find this answer anywhere

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  4 года назад +1

      Hi Jordan, I use cubase and not logic, therefore I'm not 100% sure. In any case it should work with an audio track: you have to remove the plugins automatically inserted by logic in the Audio FX block of the track channel strip. Then you should select the proper source in the input block of the track channel strip. In the audio midi configuration utility of your Mac you can verify where the spdif input of your audio interface is mapped.
