    It’s sucks how dependent we’ve become on technology. I still use my D700, and literally got a D800 yesterday, for portraits and landscapes. I’m gonna use both cameras for an upcoming wedding in October.
    I learned on a Nikon FG-20 35mm film camera and shot with it until the mirror hinge finally broke.
    I haven’t upgraded to the Z line and won’t while my D700 and now 800 still work. I love doing everything manually like when I did and occasionally still shoot film.
    That 200-500 is quite a bang for the buck though. I love it.

      The 200-50 is still an awesome lens. When I shoot an older DSLR (the D800 is the only one I have left and I still love it - best camera of all time), I really have to think for each shot and I do like that. I shot a LOT with that camera. What I find with all the new tech is that it makes it a little easer to get shot that were once pure luck no matter how long you waited. And even still, nothing beats experience. The best gear in the world will not produce great results in a new shooters hands. Conversely, the experienced photographer can get great shots on just about anything.!!! Years ago, I took my best lens and was shooting landscapes in Death Valley with his original D3200 and I had a blast. Enjoy your D800. 🙏🤗💖

    I've heard people say that after the Nikon D800, we hit a point of diminishing returns. This video PROVES THIS XD. When a 10 year old DSLR produces images that are 99.9% of the image quality of a brand new $5000 camera for a FRACTION of the cost... we need to start questioning whether buying/making new cameras are even worth it anymore!

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  Год назад +2

      That is well put. The images I get out of this are every bit as sharp as from the Z9. The video capabilities, the EVF and eye tracking are awesome in new cameras but if I were going to do portraits again or an event where I was not worried about the sound, I would grab the D800. It is my all time favorite camera. Many that have shot DSLRs - D5 / D6 / D850say the same thing. I will say that those just getting into photography like having all the bells and whistles that the new cameras offer.... and they don't have the experience to use the older ones to get the results. Thank you, thank you! 🙏🤗💖

    • @FennixGamingYT
      @FennixGamingYT Год назад +3

      @@JonnyPink65 Also, as far as the “bells and whistles” go when it comes to taking still frames, once cameras got to a point where they were “good enough” 99% of that stuff can be achieved outside of camera in Photoshop or Lightroom etc. The new cameras are basically nothing but 10 year old sensors with sales gimmicks at this point IMO lol

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  Год назад

      @@FennixGamingYT I respect your opinion for sure. The older camera's have advantages (for those with knowledge and experience), and the new ones have advantages for newer and experienced shooters. I do think less with the new camera's. As far as editing, I think that is something that also takes practice..... and with AI some are losing that touch as well. But even a turd can only be polished so far with AI 😂 I have seen too many that have bought the latest and greatest based on RUclips and it just does not turn out the way that expect. Ah well 🤗💖

      Depends on how you use the camera. Mirrorless are good for birds and video. I'm not interested in Mirrorless yet because I take woodland pictures. I will get a Nikon mirrorless when it has 55Mpix resolution. I'm seriously thinking about getting the Fuji 100s system in the future, if I can afford it. I’m currently upgrading my Nikon F system before retirement to last 10 more years.

    D800 holds up very well for todays standards. I recently also got he D800E. After some comparison the E version is indeed sharper. It almost looks like the resolution is higher with the E version which is not of course. Both 36MP but they applied different low pass filters. The difference is not shocking but noticable.

    Great job! I have a bit of experience with the R5 and am a z9 owner. While the af is definitely a bit harder to use in the z9 I feel it’s comparable or maybe even superior to the r5 if used properly. You really have to get used to using wide area large and 3d af modes. Wide area for flying birds and 3d for perched birds. The z9 his quite an advanced camera so you’ll definitely need more time to fully understand it. Also lens selection is critical and I believe the Nikon 200-500 does not perform well with the z9 as it’s af is quite slow compared to newer lenses. Love the videos, keep them coming!

      Thank you John!!! I only had the Z9 for 4 days so I was just happy I had set it up enough to get a couple of good photos. I went though the setting before going out the next morning and set it similar to my R5, and shot is like a DSLR watching all my settings. My favorite all time camera was and still is the Nikon D800 hands down. There is just something in the images to my eye, that I call magical. It is the only camera I have found that has it. It has nothing to do with the clarity, For landscapes and even still for portraits, it is my go to. The Z9 has that same magic and that excited and impressed me. There is so much that it can do that when I do own the Z9, I don't think I will ever fully understand it, .... just enough to take a couple of good photos and that will make me happy!! Thank you thank you John 🙏💖🤗

    D800 , smiling face here ! colors, colors and colors again... deep blacks , no tinge ... pure realism I love this 36Mp sensor...
    Tried the D850... and there was somting artificial "feel" about the files... could be me, could be the software , but the D800E was better in my test. ( ISO 200 ,max 800 was used)
    And mostly, you need a crop and on DX the D850 = 19.5Mp where the D800E = 15.3 , 4.2Mp difference is hard to distinguish from each other.. and does not make a eye square instead off rond.
    Never tried the z9, not in my budget , but did had some files He* and : no coment 🤔 The lossless compressed , a bit like the D850 files not a world shocking difference ( was taken on the latest 500 f4.0FL lens, so must be perfect)
    Thanks for this video

      I completely understand. Out of all the Nikons I have owned and used, including the D850, the D800 just has a look that speaks to me. No other Nikon had quite the same feel - the D3200 came really close. The Z9, at least when I rented it, has the same feeling. I am really stupid with money and it is not in my budget either, but I believe in living for today, so I bought one on credit. If I cant pay for it, Ill sell it and then pay it off. I switched to Canon for the tech and do enjoy the color, but it is not quite the same. When I took my old D800 out for a spin a couple months ago, I fell in love with it all over again. I shoot in full frame and just crop in when editing. I dont know if any of it makes a difference but that is what works for me. I have tried several Sony's as well and was disappointed with the raw flat colors every time. I am all about what works for me and what I want to present. I had a D500 and hated it Thank you for letting me share my video and photos. I do want to rent some of the latest and greatest lenses to compare to my older ones at some point - that will be fun!!! 💖🙏🤗

      Thanks for this comment..
      I do want more "analog feel" instead of to pure digital colors, a lot of CMOS sensors lack the "dirty colors", grey/color mixtures , pastel shades.. pure deep blacks and not some very dark brown or blue that immitate a black appearance , just pure black in the grey scale and not in the color scale..
      There fore , a lot do still like the old CCD technique instead of the CMOS that , when it is a cheap model , can kluster pixels so that the real Mp in detail is lower, and have some 40x over written 4 bit jpg feel with "bleeding" colors , even when 14 Bit RAW is used.
      To me, and al lot of more fans of CCD , the D200 is someting special.. A bit Kodachome 64 effect.. ( Old tech , not the best AF, low DR etc etc.. if you find one, try it for fun on the 500mm f4.0 on a sunny day , CCD is at its best with water droplets, pure whites , no tinge ) and the lens does have its impact of course.. , good glass does help for realism.
      The more analog camera's we see in this order :
      D200(10Mp CCD)= 24Mp Fullframe in DX mode , so not that bad), D40X(10Mp CCD), D80 (10Mp CCD), D800E, D800,( both in every way far superior, but just a tiny bit more "digital") D3X ( 24Mp , a bit more "fat colors , but analog feel) , D700...and Sony A7R4 with old RPP software .and cleaned up in PhSh , very very good !!

      Well, comparing the Z9 to the D800 - both are amazing cameras - the Z9 is newer and probable has a small bit more of a dynamic range. I may also be prejudiced as the D800 was and still is my all time favorite camera. The eye tracking of the Z9 in 3d is pretty awesome.... and the EVF and other easily visibly setting in the Z9 are also pretty awesome. I like using different systems and seeing what works and what does not for the way I shoot. The D800 as older tech does not shoot as fast, but I prefer the single point focus on the D800 over the Z9 - strengths and weaknesses. Both are pretty amazing. The D3 should be the same way. I can not speak to the Z7 or any other Z bodies because up until the Z9, I think that Nikon was left behind as far as tech goes. That was why I started shooting Canon. 🙏🤗❤

      Benjamin, thank you, thank you!!! I keep it in continuous high at all times for wildlife even if the bird is perched. I use single point focus and since it is subjective with the camera, so a couple of mm makes a difference even though I have my focus point on the eye - I AM THE EYE AF!! I shoot everything in raw and JPEG so I can look at the JPEGs to see which ones I really like and look at focus. I put the jpeg and raw that I like into another folder, dump everything else, then go through the raw photos again when looking and processing in light room. I only pic the best of what I shot and figure what I missed, I will get next time. This THIS D800 has always been my favorite camera and I forgot how much I loved the picture quality. I went to the D850, then to Canon with the R5 and then the R7 (Nikon was just keeping up). On a whim one Saturday or Sunday, I pulled it out and went out shooting..... man, I was in love all over again. I don't need the bells and whistles, and found that having to think about each shot made me feel like a photographer again - it was awesome. Is there a difference between the Nikon D800 and D810?

      I have not shot the D810 - my friend James has one and love it. I think the differences are minor but I am not 100% sure. 🙏💖🤗

    If you do not mention the camera model, then no one will really know. Its amazing how many people ask for the camera model and lens when seeing an image, its irrelevant. I have 17 Nikon DSLR bodies and still use all of them. I posted an image last year and everyone thought it was with my D850 and it was an old 6mp D50 which is still excellent.

      I agree with you 100%! The best images come from the person behind that camera that loves being out shooting, has worked hard to learn how to control the light and camera, and has practiced. I see so many out there with the latest and greatest and they have no idea how to take a photo - the point and push the button. What I REALLY love about going back to my all time favorite D800 (equally as sharp as my Z9, with the D800 or D750 I have to think about my settings on every shot and it really makes me happy. As a lifelong Nikon guy, I switched to Canon a while back with the R5 to keep up with tech. I love Canon color as it is almost like Nikon color in many way - Nikon color to me is still king and that is why I bought the Z9. I have my opinions on both as far as tech - strengths and weakness on both..... but I love thinking about each shot. Thank you, thank you for watching. 🤗❤🙏

      I use the D700 12 Mpix with a vertical grip since 2 year. I think I will use it for panorama to get the HB pan format. That takes 3 pictures with 30% overlap. I will try using the 45mmF2.8 PC lens first before getting a panorama head, levering plate and nodal slide.

      I too have and still occasionally use a D50. It feels old compared to my other Nikons but in many cases the image quality is an equal match to photos taken with a more modern camera.

    I have a Z6 and Z9, looking for a wildlife lens for longer reach then my 70-200 2.8, that 200-500 seems pretty great for the price !!

      Stéphane - I REALLY enjoyed it on the Z9 I rented. So much so, I bought is and have been enjoying it on my D800! I think in many ways, I prefer it to my Nikon 500 F4 - lighter and versatile! It is on sale right now everywhere for $300 off the normal price making the new one - a new one, less than a used one. I had to buy it. I have shot wildlife with a 70-200 but there is just not enough reach! Depending on where you are, buy it from a place you can return it if you are not happy with it. I actually like it way better than the Tamron 150-600 I used to shoot that had more reach. This one has way more clarity. 💖🤗🙏 With the Z9, you can crop in for days......

    You can't come out and say everything was hand-held. You need to wait for someone in the comments to ask, "Hey, what tripod did you use?", then you're like, "These shots are actually all hand-held."... And then the comments sections is like, "Oooohhhhh..." lol...

    • @JonnyPink65

      The D800 I shoot hand held unless I am shooting starts. The VR in the 200-500 and 500 PF are pretty amazing. I prefer hand held over a gimbal as I use for my Canon 600 F4 but even that I shoot more hand held than on the gimbal. There is a freedom to it. Video though, I prefer on the gimbal or tripod. But even in the rain, I was shooting the D800, forget what lens, at a 1/90th of a second and pushed the exposure compensation UP to compensate for the low light. It works for me and I have done it for years that way. 🙏💖🤗

    Using flash? 1/750 sec and freezing hummingbird wings? Come on man.

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  Год назад

      Flash? Oh no, not for this. No flash. Just a slow shutter speed and I raise the exposure compensation to get a little more light so I can keep my ISO down on the old D800! It works for me. No flash - at 1/750 it would not fire on the camera and if you used a standard external, it would only light a small part of the scene. No flash. 🙏🤗💖
