  • A lot of folks don't utilize the U1-U5 spaces on the Pentax K1 dial (or for that matter the C1 options in the Canon system) but having a few custom presets ready to go can be a huge help.
Let's talk about how to do it!
Also, I talk about one of my favorite little lights, the Coast HX4 AND I showcase my amazingly nerdy Christmas Tree!

Thank you for this video. I don't even know why I was sleeping on this!🤦🏻‍♀️It makes total sense for night photography. Minimise messing around in the dark with settings.

Bingo! I want to get out and get shooing. The less time I spend staring at the camera screen, the faster I can get goin! Glad you found it helpful!

The Pentax KP although a 6yo apsc model also has 5 user numbers on the top wheel (and so does the newer K3iii I think).
THE single most useful thing for me personally.
(Dont have time to watch the whole vid tonight...pretty sure I'll get to hear a couple of useful tips tomorrow) 🙂

Great! I didn't think I would need five but now that I use them I don't think I could handle having less!

Nikon calls them "U" also..... U1, U2 etc. My D750 has two of them, but I don't know what the more high-end cameras have. Having a high-ISO quick time setting + a low-ISO Bulb setting for moonlight has been a revelation! Huge time saver!

YAY! Glad you found this helpful! I figured Nikon had something but everything in their menus seem so buried I had no idea where that was.

    Nice video.
I've never used user settings myself on any camera I've had, but I'm thinking about it now because I'm planning on buying a K-1. I've been missing using a proper DSLR since I had a Canon 5D many years ago but eventually downsized to M43, and then to just a single Panasonic FZ1000 when I didn't do that much photography, which I think still might be one of the best all-in-one cameras ever made, with a lens that is sharper than a superzoom should be allowed to be, and it also does an amazing job for video. Image quality wise, it also outperforms many later more expensive and higher-rated cameras.
The K-1 flew under my radar a bit since I wasn't looking at cameras when it came out, but to me it seems very close to being the perfect camera for many occasions.

I am still thrilled with mine and I don't feel like I could find a better camera for my purposes even after six years of ownership. It gives you the sense of having a serious camera and a lot of options you may not use today but might want tomorrow. Good luck!

@@CapeNightPhotography Thanks. I actually have bought one now. I had a winning bid on one on eBay for £700, which I think is a decent price for one with a "mileage" of about 50,000 shots, and I am starting with a super cheap 50mm f1.7 lens - manual focus, of course - to see if I enjoy working with it.

I never bothered with the custom user settings on my K3 II, but maybe I'll have to revisit that now.
Also kinda jealous of the tree. I was expecting either Star Wars or Dr. Who, but I was a Trekkie in my earlier years.

Love having the presets (especially five!). Regarding the tree, I was just gifted the last remaining three Star Trek Ornaments to go with the ship topper and it now does an 8 minute show! If interested, here's the video I recorded for family last night: ruclips.net/video/HuiCA_vhTyk/видео.html

@@CapeNightPhotography congrats on completing the collection. One of my gifts was a Lume Cube 2.0. It's a hefty and bright (or dim in long exposure mode) little sucker that I think will work great for some special effects/light painting. If any of your Nightaxian crew have used it, I would enjoy hearing of your experiences.

I am so happy you enjoyed the video! The K1 has been my favorite camera and I think I'd only replace it with a future K1 model. Maybe a Mark 3? Have a great day and thank you for your comment!

Hey, great video, really helpful! Your videos are one of the reasons why I got me a second-hand K1, received it today and now trying out different things and scrolling through the different settings. Also tried to save different user settings, like you did in this video. I can save them, I can check them and the settings are right saved like I did. But when I dial the wheel on top to one of this user settings, let´s say U1, the Cam doesn´t change the settings like I saved it, It doesn´t change settings at all when I scroll the wheel through the different programms...what I´m doing wrong??

Update on the Mode Dial Malfunction - seems like it is a famous failure for the K1! Did a some online research and tried to fix it myself - maybe this video is helpful for other K1 users as well: ruclips.net/video/Xry5bzbfdSU/видео.html

@@CheapShotsProd OH! I didn't know about this. Thank you for sharing it and posting this link for others to see. Now I know what the inside looks like! I haven't run into this issue on either of my K1 units. Also, thank you for watching my videos and for your kind words! Tim

Good video. I have a K-70 and have been playing with long exposure night photography. I’m interested specifically what settings to turn on or off.
The K-70 has one of the 3 presets set with a canned Autotracer setting. I’m thinking that’s not even useful without the GPS unit, but I could be wrong. I was thinking I’d adjust that one for my long exposure preset.

    • @CapeNightPhotography

Thanks for the comment! I had heard that Pentax was releasing an update that wouldn't require the gps unit but it probably isn't ideal.
