Tommy's drumming is genius. a guitarist playing drums and creating a drumming technique/style that was absolutely perfect for the music the band was creating....it was all such a magical convergence of odd people, with odd ideas and limited technical ability in which everything each member put toward the overall sound/identity of the band was the EXACT ingredient necessary to bring everything together into a unique/powerful/cohesive musical machine. Tommy's drumming is so killer. Sure, he may not have any of the technical ability or chops or versatility as a drummer BUUUUUUUUT, every single song that he was the original/recording drummer on is never better than the way that Tommy originally played/recorded it. Listen to this set....his style of playing adds so much dynamically to the sound and, every snare, cymbal and (occasional) tom he plays is for a significant reason. Marc Bell is a phenomenal drummer and is capable of playing a wide range of styles/techniques (the difference between DUST, The VOIDOIDS, Wayne County, etc...and. of course, THE RAMONES) but, as great an addition he was when Tommy quit...he did bring his own feel to the older songs and, pretty much from the moment he joined the band, Johnny was into his "we can do the set 52 seconds faster" phase where he kinda forced the entire band to pummel through a whole lot of the nuance and dynamics that were nothing complex BUUUUUT, these bits (the majority driven by Tommy's drumming) were really important to the brilliance of the first few landmark 5-Star masterpiece LPs. Apologies for the essay...but, you can REALLY hear EVERYTHING that Tommy is playing here and, you can clearly notice when he is pushing the band into another gear or, pushing them to lock into his relentlessly solid and somewhat mechanical overdriven cruise control...accenting important changes with simple and distinct cymbal crashes and/or some quick floor tom maneuver that slides right back into the 8th note marathon which is his signature bit...I'm surprised that he didn't have Popeye arms from playing those never-ending 8th notes. Genius
The full set for the US festival is online now but it's badly cropped. Hopefully a better video source emerges at some point. I believe the complete version of Musikladen has been available for a while now
Great to see the entire circulating show in such high quality! There is another group of videos in similar quality, however it is missing blitzkrieg bop.
The complete set was 14 songs as stated by Johnny in his book. He had a string broken on the blue Mosrite, but was not allowed to change the string. This is why we see the back-up guitar. Intresting to find out to know the 3 other songs. Pinhead was included, you can hear this at the fade-out.
I suppose that the order is: Loudmouth Beat on the Brat Blitzkrieg Bop Glad To See You Go Gimmie Gimme Shock Treatment Sheena Is a Punk Rocker Rockaway Beach Commando Listen To My Heart California Sun I Don't Wanna Walk Around with You Pinhead (omitted)

Genius
@doug - Tommy was perfect because he was not perfect...
This was the Ramones I fell in love with in 1978, still in School, 14 years old, not the late 80’s/90’s pinky and perky 78 rpm sound.
timed set list:
Sheena 0:19
Loudmouth 2:44
Brat 4:36
Blitzkrieg Bop 7:00
Heart 9:22
California Sun 11:02
Judy 12:53
Walk Around With You 14:10
See Ya Go 15:52
Shock Treatment 17:44
Rockaway Beach 19:24
Commando 21:28
the Ramones are amazing here.. someone should edit the sound to take out the fake applause and cheers... gets in the way
For years we've had the incomplete version of Musikladen and US festival 1982, maybe one day the full version of this will rise up.
