@@Osquar No, it's not poisonous. There used to be elevated lead levels and you shouldn't eat large amounts. More like no more than two times a week. Sadly the Baltic has fallen victim to predatory fishing practices so there are very little fish left for our Swedish fishermen. For example: the Baltic Herring is more or less extinct these days

the thing about smoking prawns, I think he means that you often extend the shelf life by smoking prawns that you have not managed to sell, they are perfectly fine to eat but the quality is worse than if you had smoked them directly.
and yes!, if it hasn't moved after you cut it with the knife, it would have meant that it was already dead, and could have been unhealthy to eat.

Connor, you have to take into account the göteborg(gothenburg) vs stockholm bickering/rivalry, when people from götet(gothenburg) say stuff that like gothenburg is the best. Eastside vs westside thing. Keeping true to your birthside. Giving a peak when you can to the other side. Especially those two sides. While the south part(skåne county) is being heckled by both sides. And the northern sweden just heckles everyone for being pussies, except the north. A fun banter, if it stays as a banter.

Stockholm is on the east cost with the Baltic sea. The water is brackish and normaly warmer in the Baltic sea.The lake Mälaren on the west of Stockholm is sweet water. The water on the west coast is salt water and colder. So different fishes and sea food can be find. Also the Baltic sea has problem with low amount of new fresh water, so the water gets higher levels of toxins and some fishes are not good because of that. So as I see it, alot older people do it still who havnt stopped yet, but not many younger people do it. I belive it doesnt belong to the category "tough" or "bad guy" or "cool" kids who does it anymore. I asked some kids what they thought of smoking, and they said "Who wants to smell like an ashtray?". The water that separates Malmö and Copenhagen is called the Öresund. However it is not so often nowadays that this water completely freeze, but it has happened. When I was young we used to ice skate on the sea. In fact, this is how the Swedish king Charles X Gustav in the winter of 1658 finally defeated the Danes, by actually taking his entire army and crossing the Öresund while it was frozen and then laying siege to Copenhagen. This was a very risky move, but it seemed that fortune favors the bold! But this is very rare as warmer currents are carried from the Gulf of Mexico, through the Golf Stream which flows diagonally across the Atlantic from the Southwest to the Northeast and brings these warmer waters into the southern part of Sweden and Denmark, which is why we can have milder climates than Germany and Poland even though they are further south.

Walking from Sweden to Denmark in winter isn't recommended. It's far too cold on the bridge.
Even though a Swedish army walked across one winter a few centuries ago to teach the Danes a lesson, today the shipping lanes are kept open with icebreakers if it freezes.
And if you want to see an honest reaction to eating surströmming, search for it on the Ashen channel. Or click this if you trust links from strangers: ruclips.net/video/hIVTIwvJttg/видео.html

I'd say the smell of Surströmming, after it's been opened under water and rinsed etc, is a bit like a bad egg-fart.
I guess it might be more intense if you smell it straight out of the can instead of having it on a plate after it's been rinsed. I guess similar to how some people get nauseous when smelling someone else's puke and even start puking themselves, the same effect can come from the fermented smell of Surströmming.
It also comes down to is you are used to it or not. Someone who clean vomits daily will probably not start to throw up after 5 years at the job.

    smör [smur] = butter,
It's the cognate of your English word "smear", which also used to mean "grease" of "fat" (noun) in Old(er) English.
    bord = table
gås [goas] = goose normally, but the word is used here to mean "(open) sandwich" / " snack" etc.
So the litteral tranlation of this borrowed Swedish word is
    "butter(ed) sandwich table"
( i.e. a buffet of open sandwiches of various types ).

Worst thing you can do is opening a surströmming-can under water.
It's a bit counter intuative, but the initial spray numbs your sense of smell, it really doesn't smell that bad after the initial shock.
However, if you open the can under water you won't have the shock and you'll feel the smell more intensly and for a longer time.
Another thing, traditionaly the drink with surströmming isn't beer and snaps, it's milk.

Traditional Swedish swear words are not sexual references, rather they are religious. So, one easy one for you is “Satan!” - pronounced “Sah t on”. Also, “Helvete!” Enjoy. 🥰
