Hi, just seeing your view on the D3200. The D3100 does have auto focus in movie mode, they call it full time servo. That said, my 3100 only does 10 minute videos no matter what size memory card. Thanks
It is a good point indeed. Also the screen is protected agains scratching when rubbed on you when hanging around your neck, when the screen is facing the camera.
Hi mardegheseha, It is hard to tell what the problem was as I sent back the first D3200 straight away. It had an SD card in it with someone's images on it. They were all out of focus. The few images I took were also poor and not at all sharp. I thought it was just a faulty model. The second one I tried was at the Nikon stand at the Melbourne Digital Imaging show. I took my own SD card and tried a D5100 and a D3200. The D5100 images were all usable whereas the D3200 were not, hence my decision.
I have a D50. I shoot my kids sports activities a lot. These include indoor and outdoor sports. My main limiter is dealing with noise when using higher ISO for indoor or low light sports. I have a 55-200 lens currently. What would be a better upgrade: a 2.8, 70-200 lens or new body (D3200 or D5100)?
Matt .. thanks for some very sound advice .. of all the people doing video blogs and youtube videos on photography .. I respect you the most because its obvious that you know what you are talking about. Thanks
D3100 and D5100 both do have auto focusing during video so D3200 is not first with that function, it might have latest implementation of it though but it is not the first one to have as you state in video @2.15
I looking at upgrading from my Kodak Z612 digital camera to one of the Nikon 3100,3200 and now that I have seen this maybe the 5100. I am also looking at the Canon T2i and T3i Rebels. Having an external mic option is great I think for the 3200. Of these cameras do any of them offer manual focus on the lens and what is the maximum zoom rate on them. My Z612 has 12x optical and I don't want to go below that now and I don't want to have to buy a tele lens worth 700 bucks!Which is the better choice?
I am looking to buy in a few months and was looking mainly at canon since I got an S5IS, and exactly at a 60D because of better build than the T series and while handling them on store it feels better on my hands. Now, what would be comparable in price and features on the Nikon realm, not more expensive than a refurbished 60D which can be gotten regular price of around 700 body only and 200 more with a kit lense. What models I should research on the Nikon lineup that compares?
Nikon 3100 plus tamron zoom lens, 5100 or 3200. All represent similar price. I'm a newbie to dslr, wouldn't mind a bit of video for school projects, pictures are priority. Like pet, close range depth of field shots, scenery photography. Budget is pretty much 430-450 ish. Any thoughts. Also, can anyone recommend a good sd card!
I have gone from a D300 to a D5100 as I understand the menus with illustrations and help buttons better than the 300's gazillion buttons and knobs with their microscopic symbols. I'm happy with the 5100 except for night photography. On auto WB the 5100 picks up a ton of red. If I use manual WB with sodium vapor this tones down the red but then other lights look unnaturally yellow. The D300 got ALL of the lights JUST RIGHT on auto WB, thus much better results with night shooting. Any ideas?
it also depends on the price diferences between the 3200 and the 5100 as now there are loads of very nice offer packs from the 5100 out there. One for example has the 18-55 and 55-200 lens and another has the 18-105 and not sure which might be better for me.
i am a beginner, i am stock in making decision on what to buy. im from the philippines. which do you recommend for me nikon d3100 or nikon d3200? thanks in advance.
What would you do for the price range the d5100 or the d5200? Basically for me if i grab the d5200 it will cost me a lens that i could i gotten along with the d5100(two lenses for same price.). Is the d5200 good enough to justify the price point vs the d5100? Any and all are welcome to respond but question goes to you Nikonguy!
Thank you sir for the video!. I ask one thing only, between d3200, and d5100, which is the winner overall? I had a Nikon d3000 and want the best upgrade. I am a cinematographer and advanced photographer. Which is the best? thank you!
I am currently thinking about either the 3200 or the 3100. I don't need the mic jack, I don't need that many video features, I don't need 24mp and when I look at comparison shots the image quality of the 3200 doesn't exactly blow me away either compared to the images taken with the 3100. Right now I have a Canon Powershot A1200. While the image quality isn't exatly terrible (ok, it is) I would prefer it to be more in control of my camera. Do you think the 3100 would be the better choice for me?
Hello, I want to buy an entry-level Nikon DSLR dedicated to mainly portrait photos and shooting video so in the future I can edit some short-movies. What do you recommend? After seeing a million reviews, tutorial and comparions I found myself even more confused. Shall I get the D3100 or the D5100 knowing that the for the time being I'll only use the kit lenses. Looks like the D5100 is better but from the sample movies that I've seen here on RUclips, the video shooting of the D3100 seems better?!
I want 60fps and I want the flip screen! I wish if they make a hybrid between the D3200 and D5100! Can you use a crop factor while shooting video to get a better range?? Like increasing the crop factor from 1.5 to 2.5 to get 750mm range on 300mm lens due to the large sensor??? Some people do that on their Canons but I wonder if it's possible on Nikon cameras as well??
considering that I'll be doing mostly video - how important do you think the swivel viewfinder (5100) is ? Other than that - I have already ordered a 3200 (which is on the way).........for like walking when shooting - will I be OK w/ the 3200 ?
Hi Matt,. based on the title of your playlist, I'm curious about the D7100,. any link that shows the specs and release date?. Is this confirmed? I'm using D5100 and planning to upgrade.. I'm planning to have D7000 but based on the rumors about D7100, I'm hesitating to buy D7000,. I'm planning to keep my D5100 and wait until D7100 is released instead. What do you think?. thanks and more power to you!
Hi matt im looking to switch from canon to nikon, what would be a good choice for my first nikon im thinking the d5100 Or another midrange camera For sports under $1000
Just in time (almost). Yesterday I was ready to buy a D5100, but for now I'll put everything on hold until further picture/video test. He mention also the D5200!!! Another waiting before buying? possible... But if I take the D3200, I'll be able to upgrade the quality choice of lenses! Whait and see... (for me)
i have a question, can the d5100 shoot at infinite shutter speed with a trigger??? i see it only goes up to 30 secs, but i cant find out about it with a trigger. please reply someone!!!
I shoot a lot of model train and real train photos plus video and I need a camera that can handle it all. Zoom is important to me as I stated as is macro.
I currently have the D5100, I'm waiting until they replace the D7000 to get a cheap 2nd hand D7000 so that I can get better focusing and wireless flash sync but for now - my D5100 is working fine :)
Looking forward to the 3200 shootout. I use a D700, so im missing the video i like the d5100 but you keep killing them and so does my friend so you must have something in common but im highly interested in nikons new xpeed3, well just have to wait and see i guess
I depends on what you plan to primarily shoot. If it is mp you are wanting the d3200 has 24 vs the d5100 at 16. Both are bodies are extremely similar. You can always upgrade the standard kit lens (unlike Lazar's suggestion) for under 200.00 on ebay. Therefore there is more to factor in than the better lens or kit. Images from both D3200 examples I tried, with kit lens, were poor compared with the D5100 with kit lens. For an entry level DSLR I would have thought the kit lens should be sufficient. I had better results on standard settings with my old D60 and later D5000. Perhaps I was unlucky with those two examples, perhaps not.
no need to apologise :) I haven't used it much... my friend has one, maybe can loan to review - but it is not a 'hot' product now, just because it is not current sales item.
Myself I'm thinking that the rear display screens are the biggest difference between these cameras. The resolution of the D3200's screen is very high and the flip/tilt D5100 screen is valuable too...
@kokfah When deciding what brand of DSLR you are going to invest in you have to look at the glass as the most important factor. Go for the company that makes the best lenses overall and then pick out you camera body. Nikon glass is not cheap, but it is the best from cheap but excellent DX, to world beating FX sized lenses. Also there is 40+ years of incredible glass that still continues to fit and work to some degree on any of the Nikon bodies out now.
I almost purchased the D5100, since it was about $100 cheaper than Canon's T3i, but it didn't allow you to do manual settings in movie/video mode. That was a deal-breaker for me.
I bought the D3200 and another one for my littlebrother! I also got the wu-1a wireless adapter which is fun to use with my phone, the best part of the D3200 is the external mic slot which will be thousand times better than the D3100 toilet sound mic with the incredibly annoying focus sound!
Both will take amazing Pictures but the D5100 have superior ISO Performance = In Example? Takes better low light pictures with lower Noise levels at Higher ISO settings.
Good Advice :) Bought my entry level DSLR 3 years ago or maybe even 4.. wow.. much money in lenses and stuff like tripod, flash.. you know how it goes. But yeah the technology has moved so far ahead.. I feel that itch to upgrade. Mostly to get a better high ISO performance. It is the difference between getting the shot .. or not! So much research there :) Oh and video .. yes even though video on DSLR"s is limited to be said fairly it certainly it something. using your high grade DSLR lenses.
I have a D5100 and used the D3100, my personal opinion is to save some money and buy the D5100. it will last you years with superb quality. I bought the D5100 3 months ago and i never had one thing to complain about, it just kept pleasantly surprising me (thats what she said) :D
I have used the D3200 for the last year for shooting wildlife in Washington. It has been a great camera and I recommend it to everyone just starting out in photography. The big issue I had was lack of weather sealing, but the images have been fantastic. I am upgrading to the D7100. I think that the D5200 isn't enough of an upgrade to the D3200 to warrant spending the money. I would recommend the D3200 over it for a cheaper price.
Yes, it's an awesome camera, as are the others, don't get me wrong, but I really do enjoy the D5100's flip out screen and many features that the others lack. :)
So the D3100 it is? :P They are all entry-level cameras in my opinion^^ I can get a "used" D3100 with the 18-55mm kit lense on Amazon for roughly 370€. And by used I mean it is part of their warehouse deals which means the camera was returned by an unhappy customer and is in perfect working order. I played around with one at a store today and I liked it. The handling of the D3200 felt a little better but that definitely isn't a dealbreaker for me!
I wanted the D5100, but considered the D3100 for it's price and simply added the Zoom H4n with a Rode NTG-2. Considering the excellent audio, I'm not worried now about external mics jacks. I mount my mic on my camera anyway, and even though it's a bit bulky, the proof is in the pudding...much better than the smaller mics. I would be impressed, if this knocks the socks off the D5100 in image quality, though. I'll save up for the D800 or equivalent and be just fine once I reached that plateau. :)
just ordered my d5100 for 415 euro, i think price/Image quality ratio is just amazing! Its a bit sad to upgrade to plastic no-top-screen body after my pentax k20d, but price difference between d7000 and d5100 is to high, I would better buy 24-70 and then upgrade to FX after couple years. =)
Hi, are you familiar with "photo SFX art" (google it)? There you can watch a nice free video explaining the way to take amazing photographs. It helped Daniel to create photos that have that jaw-dropping-effect any time you look at them. Hopefully it works for you as well...
you need to review your facts before making videos- starting with talking about the 3200 replacing the 3100 - its not... their expanding their entry level line up. and the 3000 and 5000 were no longer on sale in the US as of this video date. they were replaced by the 3100 and 5100. regarding the AF, i have no idea about your 5100 but the 3100 and 3200 both offer full time AF on hd video. the 3200 has many more video options including settings while playing, but please go back and review this.
D3200 is the only camera with continuous autofocus during video ?!?! The Nikon D3100, D7000 and D5100 all have continuous autofocus during video. I ain't sure about the D800 or the D4 though ....
Hi, just seeing your view on the D3200.

Sorry i didnt mean i was mad or anything, i just wanted to know if the d5000 is a good camera and if it is, would u make a review? Thanks.
For printing A3 sized photographs, would the 16mp 5100 do or we need that 24mp D3200?

how does this compare to the T3i and also in video mode?
You said the D5100 doesn't allow continuous focus during recording, but it does. Even has facial recognition with autofocus during recording.
i just lost my 3100 coz it was stolen,i wanna buy again,u guys think 3200 is a smart move or 5100?thanks
i have a question, can the d5100 shoot at infinite shutter speed with a trigger??? i see it only goes up to 30 secs, but i cant find out about it with a trigger. please reply someone!!!
idk, but they say it will not be released this year.
If I want one purely for video only, should i go d5100 or d3200?
Is it possible that the d3200 is the only one with the CLS system?
which dslr should i buy? nikon d5100 or nikon d3200
I have been looking for a video like this for a while, glad i finally found one
can you gave me a advice , because I just wanna get a Nikon camer but just a normal one .. but a good one
I shoot a lot of model train and real train photos plus video and I need a camera that can handle it all. Zoom is important to me as I stated as is macro.

Quick question, d3200 or d5100?
between d3200 and d5100...which one is better? please someone
For stills, D5100 or D3200? For video, D5100 or D3200?
any idea when the successor to d5100 will be announced?
i am patiently waiting for the d5200 and/or canon t4i
I'm considering changing out my trusty D7000 for a D3200 for video and backup only.
But the D7000 is just so damn good at everything except 720 60fps.
how are these cameras compared to the d7000?
I own the 5100 for video - wont upgrade. Havent tested teh 5200 yet to see IQ
Looking forward to the 3200 shootout. I use a D700, so im missing the video i like the d5100 but you keep killing them and so does my friend so you must have something in common but im highly interested in nikons new xpeed3, well just have to wait and see i guess
Can you help as i need to use Nikon dslr for a low budget music videos for my studio can you recommend any models regards khuram
Does anyone know if the d5200 Is going 2 be released this yr
should i go for d3200 or d5100,, plss reply..
Go for a better lens, not a better body.
You can't get a lens that gives you more mp.
If you have money, get the D5200...39 AF points,24MP...It's like D3200 and D5100 combined.
I can't find it, could you please answer?
sir can u plz suggest me (d3200 or d5100) to buy
Images from both D3200 examples I tried, with kit lens, were poor compared with the D5100 with kit lens. For an entry level DSLR I would have thought the kit lens should be sufficient. why is it that not many photographers talk about the D5000? is it inferior?
I've been trying to make a decision for a while. I think I may just get the D5100, it has everything I need
please tell me which lens is this
I went for the D5100 because of the tilt screen, I never really use it
Myself I'm thinking that the rear display screens are the biggest difference between these cameras. The resolution of the D3200's screen is very high and the flip/tilt D5100 screen is valuable too...
which one is batter for photography?
D3200 or D5100????
Syed Sabbir d5100
@kokfah When deciding what brand of DSLR you are going to invest in you have to look at the glass as the most important factor. Also there is 40+ years of incredible glass that still continues to fit and work to some degree on any of the Nikon bodies out now.
I have tried two D3200s and was very disappointed with the photos obtained with both. I'm getting a D5100
my advise, go for the d3200. it has a better image processor and (arguably) better image quality.
I almost purchased the D5100, since it was about $100 cheaper than Canon's T3i, but it didn't allow you to do manual settings in movie/video mode. That was a deal-breaker for me.
So, can any DX Nikon shoot videos at 60 fps? And I don't care for FullHD.
Good Advice :)
Bought my entry level DSLR 3 years ago or maybe even 4.. wow.. much money in lenses and stuff like tripod, flash.. you know how it goes.
Slight edit/note should be added at 5:49 to clarify you mean D5100 and above, not the non-existent D5200.
I have a D5100 and used the D3100, my personal opinion is to save some money and buy the D5100. it will last you years with superb quality. I bought the D5100 3 months ago and i never had one thing to complain about, it just kept pleasantly surprising me (thats what she said) :D

Just bought the d5100 . Why didn't I buy it before. Just amazing too good . Love it
D3200 or D5100????
DxO Mark has the D3200 sensor ranked 11th out of 167. Outstanding for such a low priced camera.
If you are getting to do portraits i think Canon's entry level is better because the 700d has a commander flash.
3200 or 5100 ? answer me plsss :P
welcome
Yes, it's an awesome camera, as are the others, don't get me wrong, but I really do enjoy the D5100's flip out screen and many features that the others lack. :)
So the D3100 it is? :P They are all entry-level cameras in my opinion^^
I can get a "used" D3100 with the 18-55mm kit lense on Amazon for roughly 370€. And by used I mean it is part of their warehouse deals which means the camera was returned by an unhappy customer and is in perfect working order.
I played around with one at a store today and I liked it. The handling of the D3200 felt a little better but that definitely isn't a dealbreaker for me!
you can always hook up a external display!
yep, put into bulb mode.
The big diff from my point is the rasw files. D3200 -12 bit. D5100 - 14 bit. You can't imagine how much more information is there.
Those differences could included in the future D5200!!
I have A 1100d currently
I wanted the D5100, but considered the D3100 for it's price and simply added the Zoom H4n with a Rode NTG-2. Considering the excellent audio, I'm not worried now about external mics jacks. I mount my mic on my camera anyway, and even though it's a bit bulky, the proof is in the pudding...much better than the smaller mics. I would be impressed, if this knocks the socks off the D5100 in image quality, though. I'll save up for the D800 or equivalent and be just fine once I reached that plateau. :)
pleasure
sounds like you can save a few dollars and get the entry level model.
just ordered my d5100 for 415 euro, i think price/Image quality ratio is just amazing!
Its a bit sad to upgrade to plastic no-top-screen body after my pentax k20d, but price difference between d7000 and d5100 is to high, I would better buy 24-70 and then upgrade to FX after couple years. =)
I have not tried the D3100 so can't comment on it in comparison to the D3200, sorry.
Hi, are you familiar with "photo SFX art" (google it)? There you can watch a nice free video explaining the way to take amazing photographs. It helped Daniel to create photos that have that jaw-dropping-effect any time you look at them. Hopefully it works for you as well...
that jumping star in the middle is little distracting...
ive been using the 3100 but the 3200 sounds amazing and its only $100 more
you need to review your facts before making videos- starting with talking about the 3200 replacing the 3100 - its not... their expanding their entry level line up. and the 3000 and 5000 were no longer on sale in the US as of this video date. they were replaced by the 3100 and 5100. regarding the AF, i have no idea about your 5100 but the 3100 and 3200 both offer full time AF on hd video. the 3200 has many more video options including settings while playing, but please go back and review this.
D3200 is the only camera with continuous autofocus during video ?!?! The Nikon D3100, D7000 and D5100 all have continuous autofocus during video. I ain't sure about the D800 or the D4 though ....
Yes D5100 it,s nice....Hello from Latvia.
