Brandon Roy LaMarcus Aldridge Greg Oden Batum and Fernandez were also rookies that year Plus these guys had size for days Camby and Howard (Juwan). Scariest what if imo.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and he is a super nice guy. His physical issues were not within his control and it’s a shame….of course. But more importantly is his ability to move on beyond that and have a great life.
Oden played three future all stars & all defensive team members at his position in his ncaa career(Horford, Noah & Hibbert), & he absolutely dominated all of them. To say that he would have ran the league is an understatement. There wasn’t a big man in the 2010s that could have contained him.
He had medical red flags coming out of college which should have been identified but weren't. His legs weren't the same length which led to his injuries and downfall. Could have been corrected if caught early and he missed a few years recovering. He would have been a nice pro and he was dominating in college.
This only showed one of his blocks. Don't get me wrong, loved his thunderous dunks, but Greg could block / alter shots in drastic fashion. I absolutely hate that he was sidelined with injuries, such a great kid. I despise Ohio State, but damn sure watched everytime Greg Oden took the floor -- that was a fun team.

It was the correct call to draft him #1. He was a generational talent felled by injury. As someone who coaches young volleyball players, his landings are horrific. If you don't teach vb players to land correctly, over time, their backs/knees give out.
You can coach landings fine, but really it boils down to properly training strength and mobility from the feet, ankles, knees and hip so that they work in concert and eliminate injuries that are building up due to imbalances in strength and mobility. Unfortunately, most of this knowledge just wasn't developed enough until the last 5 - 7 years (and it's continuing to evolve).
You can redraft that 2007 draft 100 times over, and Oden would still go number one. Injuries robbed him of what could have been. You can see how ridiculous he was, and how he would’ve dominated the league. Freak of nature talent.

Put him in pick and rolls, had far more athleticism than most current centers in the NBA. He never would have been a dominant offensive force but he would have been a good third to fourth option and still a great defensive player. Brook Lopez is still a really good defensive player in today's game and Oden was far more athletic.

@SQUASHUA offensively yes, he was robotic and still developing. Defensively though he was a beast. He had great defensive instincts, knew how to read the offense, that's where his talent early on was. He probably would have had a similar career as Dwight, good offensive player while he had his athleticism but mostly a defensive terror.
The sad thing is he was always going to end up getting hurt no matter how many times you played his career out. His legs had unevenly grown due to a childhood injury and because of that he was always going to have leg injuries.
He would’ve been a solid (maybe all star) center, but not a franchise player. I was shocked when they picked him over Durant (who was looking like a more talented Kevin Garnett) based on college skills displayed.
His game is like a mix of Tim Duncan and Shaq. Would have been an easy 17-20 and 10 boards guy. Probably would have been a top shot blocker too behind only Dwight.

When you get to the NBA you can’t just dunk on everyone that easily unless you’re Shaq but he ain’t even close to Shaq’s build. I wasn’t that impressed with these highlights cause it looks like he can’t do anything but dunk. I’m not trying to hate but I’m just being honest
@SQUASHUA offensively yes, he was robotic and still developing. Defensively though he was a beast. He had great defensive instincts, knew how to read the offense, that's where his talent early on was. He probably would have had a similar career as Dwight, good offensive player while he had his athleticism but mostly a defensive terror.
Without the injuries Greg might still be eating in the NBA.

The sad thing is he was always going to end up getting hurt no matter how many times you played his career out. His legs had unevenly grown due to a childhood injury and because of that he was always going to have leg injuries.

He would’ve been a solid (maybe all star) center, but not a franchise player. I was shocked when they picked him over Durant (who was looking like a more talented Kevin Garnett) based on college skills displayed.

His game is like a mix of Tim Duncan and Shaq. Would have been an easy 17-20 and 10 boards guy. Probably would have been a top shot blocker too behind only Dwight.

Damn I was one of the people that have critic Portland for taking oden over kd but if he would of have never had injuries that would of not being a debate this man was a fucking beast damn but god does everything for a reason and super nice and humble person
