What to do if your window won't stay up? A Spiral Window Spring needs to be replaced. Here is a tutorial on how to replace Window Counterbalance Spring.
Thank you so much. Concise and easy to follow and I'm a 73 year old woman wanting to do her own repair! I recently fixed my own dishwasher so now I'm motivated to fix things myself
Quick and straightforward, no filler or bs. Nicely done, man.
Thank you
Your video is EXACTLY the kind of video I was looking for! No “Opening Theme Music”, no BS, it’s great. At first I thought, oh no, not great sound and an accent, but it was all just fine and everything was very clear and to the point!
Thank you sir. No fluff, no wasted time, just straight forward to how to repair the window counterbalance spring. Thank you.
Searched for a video that applied to my window type and yours was the first. I understand 100% how to fix my window situation now. Thank you!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video!!! My springs work, but are SO noisy, and it's hard to open/close the windows. After seeing this, I am confident I will be able to put in new springs, and get QUIET windows in my home!!
glad it was helpful thank you for your comment
Great video!! Right to the point and no looooong explaining!! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I just ordered mine. Fingers crossed. Just FYI, when I looked at the video from my phone, I couldn't see the comments. But as soon as I looked at it from my laptop, I saw the links. Just in case anyone else runs into this!
Thanks. So this is exactly what is wrong with my window. Thanks for helping me diagnose the problem!
I just fixed my window in 5 minutes thanks to you.
Thank you I will try it!!! I have this issue for about two years and had try to find some one the fix it!!! I decided to do it my self
Had to come back and watch this again (couldn't remember cw or ccw :). Just got springs for 4 more windows! Thanks again!
Extremely helpful. I really thought the window would have to be removed in order to complete the repair. Thank you for this video demonstration.
I saw other videos removing the windows, but this style don't look like they can be easily removed.
Glad it helped
Thanks that helps a lot. No bs or obnoxious music in the background!
Nice tools. Thanks. I have new Pella 150 series single-hung windows. I think they are spring-balanced. So far, I don't see where the spring attaches. Oops! I bought a slider by mistake. You live and hopefully learn. Thanks for lettin' me know what to look for. :)
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video and demonstration, thank you very much. Any idea on a supplier to purchase the balance clips?
Maybe we'll put him as Mr. October in the Handyman calendar of Men that Can Really Fix Stuff? Essential, he is. Maybe now I can quite possibly fix this window before anyone else realizes it is broke. Thanks!!!
Great video and right to the point 👍🏿 Thanks
Good work gives five!

Thank you sir. Learn something new every day is my motto!
Great, easy to understand video. Thank you! Going to try myself before I call anyone.
thank you for your comment
I've had problems with my windows for years and could never find windows that matched mine online until now. Thank you!!
I ordered the tool you link to on Amazon, but I found out it isn't the same as the one you use in the video. The one you're using has a hooked tip but the Amazon one doesn't. I ended up ordering my replacement balances from Swisco and they had the same kind of tool in stock. Thanks again for the video!
@@pkensler Which spring balance did you order from Swisco? I see that they have 5 options for the end clips "S300, S301, S305, S307 and S400," but they do not look like the hook clip @Legacy Handyman uses in the video.
@@DAV.AGUIRRE I ordered the S306 (30") and they work perfectly. That window is now the easiest opening one in the house.
@@DAV.AGUIRRE I'm looking at their website and I don't see the S306 listed any more... :-(
Thank you, fixed one window, different connection at the bottom but your video was very helpful, 2 more to go
Muchas Gracias por su conocimiento. Me podría decir
Donde comprar. De este estilo que esta enseñando gracias.
I have a home with 12 windows with this issue. Could you tell me what it should cost per window, some are larger than others. What source do you use for the parts? Thank you!!!!
Wow I was about to hire someone. Thank you
My spring has a hook like the one in the video and I can't find that type. Can you provide a link for non-tilt springs with the hook? Mine are 3/8" x 30" long...thanks
Great video! My screw at the top was in a different location but no big deal. Do I really need the tool to rewind the new spring? Living and working on the cheap, thanks1
You can probably attempt to do without it never tried. You can probably make a tool out of harder still wire .
great video I'm doing mine this weekend
Good luck!
Thank you so much for showing
What is the purpose of turning the piece inside the tube? Great video btw!
Winding the spring inside for counterbalance
Exactly my windows!! Thank you for the video
Thnx for sharing the video to the DIYers, very helpful!... I have a couple of non-tilt windows that're VERY difficult to open/close & I suspect it is the spiral balance issues. Can you shed some light? Also, my windows have the same balance w/ clips shown on yur video but the ones I bought off of Amazon came without. As the matter of fact, the majority of them sold online don't come with the clips on them.
Did you find the clips somewhere?
@@stevenw354 Did you have any luck finding them? xD
@@DAV.AGUIRRE I had to buy it as one piece with the clips already attached. Basically there are all sorts of different models and it is just a matter of finding the correct one and buying them
@@DAV.AGUIRRE I found them, a company made the balance with the clips for me
The link for the spiral tilt balance doesn’t have the hook on the bottom. Do you have a link for the one you used?
Great video. Had that spring tool for years but never knew what it was for.
Thank you
@Legacy Handyman thanks for the video...can you tell us how to remove the sliding window for replacement
some of it is one unit and you can not take it out from the frame. if you need to take out glass - is a different story
Excellent video
Thank you
THANKS BRO
Thank you sir! This was incredibly helpful.
Thanks. Very helpful!!!
thank you for your comment
Your spring tilt balance has clips on the end but the amazon link to buy them doesn't have them. Where can I buy the them with the clips??
Great 😊 do you know the name of that window ? ( Not the balance )
it is no name contractor grade cheapest you can find windows.
Thank you so much! Great video, very good instructions, no more window props to keep them open.
First video I saw thanks!
glad i could help.
Thank you. Greatly appreciated!
Good video. Which city do you service?

No problem 👍
Very useful information! Great video. Thanks!
Good job
I can't find the springs with the hook attached. Where do I get these? The one in the link doesn't have the hook either.

Do you have a video on how to lubricate the spiral balance?
No, I believe that they are not serviceable.
Thank you!
Hell yea thanks for the video
No problem 👍
Thank u brother
Welcome
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Perfect example of how to fix this type of window.
thank you .
thank you!
If this kind window is sticky, the only thing can be done is to replace the spring ?
you can replace window , it is always options
What is this type/brand of windows, i have two that wont close all the way i have looked and nothing seems to be in the way. Would it be possible this will be my problem?
is this installation also for Pella Windows ., the screw to secure the rod is about 3 winches from the top . ?
No idea . But concept is the same
Some of my windows aren’t broken but noisy and catching up and down. Can these be oiled? So they go up and down smoothly? Thanks
I dont think it can be serviced.
My old windows have the spiral balance and at the bottom of the spiral there was a plastic piece that stuck out about an inch to hold the windows. What is that piece called?
Not sure , may be latch?
Window pivot lock shoe
Does the hook that goes under the window come with the new spring?
It should if you order correctly. Be careful and, properly identify your type of Spiral Balancer and, if it has a "hook" attached, what type (there are three or four different types depending on the make and year). once identified you can compare and order the proper balancer with the appropriate "hook." This type, IMO is a spiral NON tilt balance as opposed to a Spiral tilt balance which is different an usually has a stud protruding or two studs on the end. Hopefully you do not have the type I have with has an FS342 "hook" which I am finding hard to find. good luck if you have not solved your problem.
@@jimd1944 Hey did you ever find the balances with the hook clips? I can not find them anywhere.
@@DAV.AGUIRRE They have to be installed at the factory or wherever you get them.
this is a really great how to video. where to I find the part if I need them.
What brand of window has these spiral tilt balance? No where in my windows does is there a name. My home was built in 2002 and I have a few double hung windows that won't stay open. im not sure if this window you have in this video is exactly like the ones we have. Can I send you a pic? I need to somehow get these windows fixed and I have some type of spiral balance.
My windows had a white plastic guide in place on both sides. I was able to remove the springs but could NOT get the new springs in from either the top nor bottom. The clip was too big to fit through at the top and it would get blocked by the plastic if I tried putting them in through the bottom. This was very annoying and frustrating because I also could not get the white plastic things out of the window. What I ended up having to do is actually put fire to the clips using a propane torch until the clips were red hot. Then I was able to push them through the white plastic guides by just letting the clips melt through the plastic. Not at all what I expected to have to do but it worked and I fixed 11 windows doing this. Now all my windows open and close very smoothly.
Thank you for sharing
I had the same issue. I dropped a string (with a small nut on end as weight) and pull the tubing UP rather than pushing down.
Great job! Really liked it! By the way, are those tilt-in or non tilt-in windows?
They appear to be nontilt
@@yayyay7076 That’s what I thought, since he fed the springs in through the top of the window.
Can you please help me? My windows open, they stay open at certain height but it takes lots of effort to open them and the noise is piercing our ears. Then to close them must put lots of force. What do you think is wrong?
Thank you.
Probably either old and all gummed up or, they are broken. Either way, for the effort, I would recommend simply replacing both balances in each window. however, if you do not want to spend the 20 - 40 bucks, you could try taking them out and, if still somewhat serviceable, you could try cleaning the coil. However, IMHO, it is not worth the little savings, the definite aggravation and time when that might/probably won't work.
Super!!
what if the front window is fine but the back one keeps falling down?
Same procedure
what is the purpose of twisting the brand new spiral for a non tilt window balance?
To put tension on the spring
Name of the tool please anyone out there hello heeeeelllllllloooooooo
amzn.to/3OevFN7
In you link, you have put the wrong tool.
now i need to watch another video to explain this video
Probably.
can't you just rewind the old spring, throw some light grease on it...? I don't know but I'm gonna try.
You can try , but usually they are busted.
And to think that I asked a contractor about how to fix my windows (nearly all in my house won't stay up), he told me that I had to buy new windows!!!
sometimes it not worth spending money on it if you have an option to replace it. But if windows in okay shape it is worth it to replace balances
i want this window, here in slovakia nobody has it.
Think something else broke in our 20 year old window. Both left and right sides, dropped this steel rod.
