Derek I don't comment much on your videos but I enjoy them all. The wholesomeness with your interactions with friends and family, the Patriotic theme throughout, and the humor barely hiding your obvious experience and intelligence, this is my favorite show. And I listen to a lot, 47 year old trucker in Indiana. This shade tree mechanic knowledge is invaluable when working with older units. Although you're probably about my age this the type of knowledge I wish I would have learned from my dad, instead of having to figure it all out myself. I appreciate you man, keep doing what you're doing! 👍👍
Easiest way for a rough guess capacity in a ford, pull a spark plug and use a piece of wire down the hole to measure the stroke, 2.870= 221/260/289 (unless it has a 5 bolt bellhousing you can guarantee its a 289, only 65 and earlier ran the 5 bolt bellhousing and no 221/260's had the 6 bolt bellhousing) 3.00= 302, 3.5=351
You can also quickly tell the difference between a 289/302 and a 351W by measuring the width of the intake. The 8.2" deck 289/302 is about 8" wide, while the taller 9.5" deck 351W will have a roughly 11" wide intake manifold. Also, on a 289/302, the pad for the distributor is almost level with the China rail, while it's about an inch down on a 351 because of the taller deck. Both have the thermostat housing in the intake manifold, which is an easy way to tell the difference between a Windsor and a 335-series Cleveland, which has it in the block.
My dad had one of four gas stations near a highway exit. The one directly across was up against a cemetery. I saw one guy eat a face full while checking a customer radiator. Before anyone got to him, he had run into and back out of that cemetery. He was fine, but that was a creepy few seconds.

There was nothing about snowmobiles and especially fast snowmobiles he did not know. That was not the only V8 powered dual track sled by a long shot, there were many that would run on Lake George for record runs. I never saw that one on the lake though. I also notice there are no studs in the tracks so I can be pretty sure it was still in development.

The chain setup off the tailshaft is made of the 2 drive chains from the 72 panthers..... AMAZING! I recovnize them from the 4 or 5 panthers of that era i have owned in the past few years, unmistakable.
Wow! What a trip down memory lane for me. My brothers raced Cats in the late 60's - early 70's. I remember when Cat brought out the custom "Boss Cat's" for attempts at speed records. They succeeded in setting a few records but the records didn't stand very long as technology allowed more traditional styled sleds with bigger/better snowmobile engines to break the "Boss Cat's" speed records. If I remember correctly a 800 cc Hirth powered King Cat was almost as fast directly from the factory. Great video.

50:21 Oh my goodness!! The 2bbl Autolite STILL has the the tag so that if a guy needs to get a carb kit it will not be too hard! I really enjoyed your explanation of the sparkalators. You are quite brilliant. Best to all. :)
That's just what I was going to say. The shifter looks like a mustang for sure and little I know......I never seen a 302 with a automatic. Had a 68 stock 302 but it was a manual. They may have done it but every mustang I was around when I was young and dumb all the 302's were manuals.
@asteinmann Those castings only refer to the first year of use. That manifold could have been used on a later year 302. If I remember correctly, you could option for either a 289 or 302 in 67 and maybe 68. There were some full size cars that only had a 289.
No joke. No way to really stop it and the motor is protected in a forward collision by the driver. Wonder if a feller could hook up an air bag as an ejection seat?
The stuff you drag to the shop always amazes me. You have some of the best content and are always amusing and enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Peace
Love your show and your Ave like vocabulisims. One point of erection though. The primary on a coil is the low voly side. The secondary is the sparky side. 1.6 oooms is very good on the primary. You want the ration betwixt the secondary and primary to be hi. The hi'r the ratio, the more pixies you'll have.
How much is there to know if you're familiar with any other brand of 4-stroke gasoline engine ever built for any purpose whatsoever? They all work the same way.
Unless it's a four stroke Diesel. Because it's possible to run one off gasoline. Or pretty much any other combustable liquid. Run time variable. Also you can fit spark plugs. Making it depend less on compression, and more on ignition.

Informative Derek! Always learn something new! Thank you for explaining in layman terms! And I have Fords.....! Looking forward to the next video on this! Interesting snow mobile! Sad the owner isn't around...would be fun to pick his brain about this!
On Ford small blocks, supposedly starting in 68 (not 100% sure on that) they should have a partial VIN stamped into the block on the flat pad just behind the intake manifold. The first digit/letter is the year of what it's out of. Good job going through part numbers, etc to help ID the year of the engine and what it's out of.
That trans isn't from a mustang but I'm with you on the shifter and rad. I was guessing ford pu motor pre 1972 .hoping for engine casting numbers before video ends
@@lucasswearingen377 I thought it was a fmx with the cast iron center section. I might be wrong. I'd have to go watch again. A 6 bolt c4 could definitely be a mustang trans.my bad ...maybe
You can get water in from corrosion from the intake manifold or bad intake gaskets. Also you should add that only point distributors use ballast resistors to reduce the power (amperage), if you change to electronic dizy you can't run a resistor or it won't run right. They reduce the amperage thus reducing heat so your coil and points last longer, but electronic dizys need a higher amperage so if you leave it in you won't get enough power (weak spark).
Look on the Block below the exhaust manifold. That's a favorite spot for the casting numbers. ALSO the numbers aren't always in the same place because they used so many different foundries for their blocks. They didn't have dedicated foundries for each block until the early 70's.
@@701chevy9 you's act like the world revolves around chevy's..when you come around to a ford it just seems odd to you's,,,me being a diehard ford guy...this is all natural to me...and me working on a chevy is like all ass backwards and chevy does dumb things and puts things in weird places...like a rear mounted dist..lol
Well, if the intake is original to the block, it is can only be a 260 or 289. 302, while in the same engine family, was introduced in '68 model cars. :) Love the channel, Derek. One of my new favorites!

There were some full size cars that only had a 289.
exactly what caught my eye too!
@@oldfarmer4700 It was from a Fairlane or Torino he said.
Holy hell, that’s the most dangerous thing i have ever seen in my entire life😂😂😂😂💪🏻💪🏻
No joke. No way to really stop it and the motor is protected in a forward collision by the driver. Wonder if a feller could hook up an air bag as an ejection seat?
But I want it. Or want to build something like it.
...and it is glorious, is it not? ‘MERICA!
It looks and sounds like a machine the Devil himself would drive.
The stuff you drag to the shop always amazes me. You have some of the best content and are always amusing and enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Peace
Thank you Dave
Love your show and your Ave like vocabulisims. One point of erection though. The primary on a coil is the low voly side. The secondary is the sparky side. 1.6 oooms is very good on the primary. You want the ration betwixt the secondary and primary to be hi. The hi'r the ratio, the more pixies you'll have.
VGG: "I don't know much about Ford engines."
Also VGG: "Let me drop some Ford knowledge on you for every aspect of every Ford engine ever created."

Cylinder 2 is just having a cold snack
Born in 66 that's old crazy ideas speed !! That video was awesome!! OLD stuff will live on !! Thank you for taking the time to get her running vroom vroom!! I'm sure you will!! STAY SAFE OUT THERE BROTHER !! And get her fired up on 8 cylinder!! OLD school!! That was awsome!!
Derek! Please be careful with that radiator sitting behind you!
Sure will
Thank you for going in depth on the edu-ma-cation! I don't do a lot of wrenching but it's really good to learn that stuff, especially how to read a sparkalator.
I love this contraption ! What a marvel of engineering ! Can't wait to see her throwing rooster tails out in the white stuff !

oddly enough, those few songs he released have been covered by many others, multiple times and did better. even though none topped the charts, many people still liked it ;)

@@throttlebottle5906 how many bought the album just because it was Garth though?
Nick W., same response here! Who doesn't remember thinking, "what is Garth smoking these days?" Shania came up with a much better plan to break into mainstream pop. Poor Garth. He was like Betamax, while Shania was VHS.
looks like this thing coming straight out of the Mad Max alternate snow apocalypse
Fun fact: it's 2021.. time to get your mad max rigs ready
snowpocalypse......get it right
I would DEFINITELY watch that movie!
Love it how you make working on old engines as enjoyable to watch as it is to actually tinkering on them myself. spraying the oiled up motion lotion to bring some fire down... loving em!
Informative Derek! Always learn something new! Thank you for explaining in layman terms! And I have Fords.....! Looking forward to the next video on this! Interesting snow mobile! Sad the owner isn't around...would be fun to pick his brain about this!

@@keithyoung7640 So true if you think about it! Like an unfinished piece of art in the hands of a modern day Picasso!lol
Man the 70’s were wild, radiator, fuel tank and battery surrounding the cockpit...great video Derek
I don’t know about the intake but my guess was he used a 66 mustang from the radiator and shifter that it has in it
That trans isn't from a mustang but I'm with you on the shifter and rad. I was guessing ford pu motor pre 1972 .hoping for engine casting numbers before video ends
@@inmate666 it’s a plain c4 why do you say it’s not from a mustang specifically?
@@lucasswearingen377 I thought it was a fmx with the cast iron center section. I might be wrong. I'd have to go watch again. A 6 bolt c4 could definitely be a mustang trans.my bad ...maybe

@@lucasswearingen377 it is an fmx not a c4. Cast iron center section and dip stick in the side of the pan .
This was awesome, glad you care enough about the history to buy and document this
Anybody else yell “America “when that thing started , that thing is so cool
Just you Doug just you. It is cool thou.
A guy was thinking, I would love to see a Derek's Museum of Motorized Mayhem and seeing unique builds and saved on rigs.
It's truly amazing how Derek can identify an engine the same way a CSI agent can identify a body.
Tucker Carlson tonight
Me with any other creator: *skips over sponsorship
Me with Derek: *watches the whole sponsorship because he somehow makes it enjoyable to watch*
Look on the Block below the exhaust manifold. That's a favorite spot for the casting numbers. ALSO the numbers aren't always in the same place because they used so many different foundries for their blocks. They didn't have dedicated foundries for each block until the early 70's.
THAT sound as it started to tick over ....sweeeet

Well, if the intake is original to the block, it is can only be a 260 or 289. 302, while in the same engine family, was introduced in '68 model cars. :) Love the channel, Derek. One of my new favorites!
