  • This 77 Porsche 911S belongs to a friend of mine, the car's name is Heinrich. I'm not amused about the fact that often people sneak around Heinrich when my own cars are around. The film contains the replacement of the MacPherson Strut. Sounds simple. Isn't.

    By way of a lesson in sucking eggs... Aside from heat, one thing that's often helpful when separating tapered joints and other stuck joints, is to place another (bigger) hammer on the far side of the joint to the spot where you're hitting it. It helps ensure that the shock is only applied to the joint in question and it often means you don't have to hit it as hard to shock the taper (or stuck thread) apart.

    I might have been tempted to pop the special socket on the Milwaukie impact wrench, but I suspect that could have ended in disaster for either the nut or the socket. Either way, you did a great job of freeing it off with the bar. Great video.

    • @georgebettiol8338

      Agree - the temptation of applying the impact driver to the issue needs to be curtailed when 'frustration and seeing red' begins to take hold - something that only experience teaches you. Just looking at the expensive special Porsche socket indicates that it's somewhat fragile if used with an impact driver.

    My 2002 Acura has a similar LCA with ball joint like that, except it has a separate steering knuckle from the strut. The ball joint is so seized to the absolute max, I’m thinking of unbolting the LCA and remove it with the knuckle attached, and cutting the LCA off and try to point the ball joint out of the knuckle, and just buy a new lower control arm. Sometimes the grinder has to come out and chop and replace has to happen

    Superb Job! Just a question, i also did this job recently to my 930 but i applied a little grease to the threats of all fasteners. Is there a reason you just bolt everything together without greasing stuff?

    • @lukasmatzinger
      @lukasmatzinger 11 месяцев назад +2

      I would say that unless a torque spec specifies lubricant on the threads (e.g. a specific Loctite product, ARP head bolts require ARP lube, rod bolts sometimes require engine oil etc), I would consider it a dry torque spec. If you lubricate the threads you significantly increase the stretching of the bolt, which might cause it to fail if it goes over the max allowed for that fastener. I would however use grease or even better anti-seize on all metal to metal surfaces, like the ball joint to spindle interface, the back side of the rim where it contacts the hub etc. This is especially important on dissimilar metal surfaces (e.g. alu touching steel etc) and will ensure that the next owner in 30 years won't have as tough as a job as Mr. Greasy Fingers is having here.

      Hello François. I had a bit of a complicated year, but I’m on it. The next film is in the making, 2-4 weeks, I guess …

    For my own curiosity, given that you'd bought the expensive Porsche special tool, then would attaching it to a 3/4" impact driver to undo matters be so bad?

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  11 месяцев назад +1

      It’s actually not a bad idea to use an impact driver. I could have tried …
      You see, it’s definitely not so that I always have all the right ideas at the right time. Just filming my journeys.

    I find that your content offerings is akin to what a serious drug addict must endure when his dealer is no where to be found. Look buddy, buy some more dam cars and get busy! You hooked us, now fulfill your obligation! Of course I speak in jest..... Kinda. Thanks for the quality good stuff. Really.

      So you think I’m on a Breaking Bad with cars instead of crystal meth?
      In fact I’m currently rebuilding my life around making cars and doing nothing but making cars.

      @@GreasyFingers Your living my dream and I am merely jealous as all hell. I can tell you have spent a lifetime of labour not of your choosing, but necessity, and now you are rebuilding the structure of a life worth living. Humility and grace shows through just like the cars you work on. Congratulations on the rewards that come from the courage to change and realize that the trail you blaze will encourage others to possibly try the road to contentment as well. Corny, but true.

    Did the car require an alignment after the new struts were installed?

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Scott. If you don’t touch the strut mount, you don’t have to adjust camber and caster. Toe must be aligned.
