  • You've heard of summer, winter, and fall but what in the world is snake season?
It is almost that time of year. Pretty soon you will be hearing warnings about snake season if you live anywhere in the Southwestern United States.
Here in Phoenix Arizona the snakes start becoming more active around mid-March but there is more to snake season than just the time of year. In this video I try to cover what really causes "Snake season" and how you can stay safe hiking or herping in Arizona this snake season.

Really enjoyed this video. Great advice that's also completely relevant to all snake encounters across the globe. I had one with an Eastern Brown two days ago and it showed no signs of aggression at all because as soon as I saw it basking on the trail, I froze and didn't move until after it had decided to move away in its own time. It was so cool to see it moving like liquid over the rocks beside the trail and to vanish almost instantly in the scrub.
I've had a few such encounters lately - really calm with no panic from the snake or me, but even people born and bred in the area will swear that Eastern Browns will chase after you and attack as soon as they see you. They really don't! If you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. You just have to be sensible to avoid a negative contact - stay out of long grass, don't try and grab a snake if you see it, and, as you say, don't put your hands and feet where you can't see them.
And definitely, don't drink and snake!

    So incredibly knowledgeable!
I no longer live in Phoenix, but my parents & I travel there yearly, & also deal with rattle snakes in Utah.
Thanks again for all of your hard work & dedication creating such helpful, fun content. We sure love & appreciate you.

Phrases that get you into the ER often start with "hold my beer", "look what I can do", and "I've done it a hundred times!"

No worries for me! Living in Oregon my chances of seeing a rattlesnake are very low. I will be happy when snake season is here! I love to see the wild garters around and maybe someday I'll get lucky and see a rattlesnake or different species.

Yeah… I have a video from last year where I licked snow off a cactus. I am embarrassingly Arizonan. 😅

Found a few snake dens this last winter here in Alabama, didn't want to mess with it to find out if they were venomous.

2:38 I save that energy for when someone says poisonous when they mean venomous 😅

Step on the log_(as opposed to over it)that crosses the trail and get a good step past the log. They like backside of log
