Rodrigo Amarante: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
- Rodrigo Amarante has made the year's tenderest record. Cavalo is sonically rich and spare at the same time: Every instrument breathes and every sound blends, yet every moment is distinct. At Cavalo's core are heartfelt songs and Amarante's sweet, smoky voice.
Amarante is from Rio de Janeiro, and these days lives in Los Angeles. You may know him from a few other projects: Rio's Los Hermanos, as well as Little Joy, which included Binki Shapiro and Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti.
For his Tiny Desk Concert, Amarante brought his small Harmony parlor guitar from the '30s, known lovingly as "Butter." These songs are stripped to their essence, and what you'll encounter here - and what you can't hear on Cavalo - is the warm, approachable singer's physical presence. Prepare to be drawn close to this intimate music. You'll want to crawl in bed with it. --BOB BOILEN

This guy is a generational talent. A classic song writer on the plains of Dylan and Waits. I no longer get frustrated by the popularity of modern pop music and it's vacuous embrace. Not because I enjoy it any more but rather music like this here makes me forget. It just doesn't matter. Let them eat cake. I'll have my meal here thank you.
Your comment is so beautiful! Thanks
Well said :)
He sings like he's telling a story, looking at you straight in the eye.
Damn. I had to delete my last comment and post again, because this man deserves better than a single word. Brilliant sir. You've made a fan today, and thank you.

Gratificante ver músicos brasileiros por aqui. Grande Rodrigo, lindo set, Obrigado TinyDesk!

His face is so expressive. The whole thing looked like a scene from a movie.

does anyone else feel like this guy is not getting enough glory?
He doesn't want glory... Back in the days, when he played for "Los Hermanos", they had a song called "Ana Julia" which was an immense hit. The band simply didn't want to play that song.
Maybe he just want to do his stuff, playing his music here and there, and live his life in peace.
@@gabrielguedes9273 That song is fantastic and is the reason why him and Marcelo got a platform. The song was too pop for their style, but it's a gem nevertheless.

I would like to know as well... Why just 5 years later?! Maybe it's caused by quarantine and we need to calm down and feel conforted by our countrymen.... It's an amazing performance!
why not? music is timeless
Renata B. Lozano I think you’re right, they’ve been looking for more spirit elevating things, if I may say in that way, then the current corona nerve-striking news. And although he’s Brazilian, for being a folk singer it does feel very relatable to everybody.
because that was the time for you
Cavalo is still one of my favourite albums ever!
Rodrigo Amarante is a Brazilian singer/songwriter who encountered fame as one of the members of the group Los Hermanos. If you enjoy this concert, check his other project Little Joy and Los Hermanos, specially their #4 Album.
higor valle whaaaat #4 is like the weakest of them. Bloco do eu sozinho is much more bold experimentally yet very accessible
bloco do eu sozinho is the best one!
Ventura is the best one hahaha
Listening all of them, then
he has such a kind face

Esse cara tem algo muito único...
I love how attentive he is to his audience.
Cavalo is my favorite album of the past decade. I can't even tell you how many times I've listened to it. I love his songs with Little Joy and lots of his songs with Los Hermanos, but Cavalo is astonishing. I love the composition, I love the performances, and the sound palette - which he can't represent here - is so rich and textured. It stands side-by-side with Estudando o Samba by Tom Ze, in my opinion. I'm grateful for all the wonderful music that emerges from Brazil each year, and I still keep a Google Alert for Rodrigo Amarante. "Tuyo" is great, but I'm hoping it drives people toward this album.
Wow I grew up listening to los hermanos and I felt like no one else around me liked or listened to their music like I did. To find out there’s people from other countries listening and digging his music after all these years is amazing. Genuinely made me shed a tear I don’t even know why.
So much nostalgia. Cheers my friend thanks for your good taste in music!
@@Rudi-1996 It's great to find people who love what you love. I feel that way anytime I discover great new Brazilian music - there's something distinct about it that feels unlike anything else to me.
Representa o Brasil tanto quanto carnaval e futebol, tanto quanto funk e a congada etc.

There are times where I wish I could like a video a million times over. In 2018 I had the immense pleasure of seeing Mr Amarante live in Ghent. Of the numerous performances I saw that year, two were truly magical and his was one of them. Can't wait to see him again once this world turns to normal again!
The only thing I disliked about the video, was that it was too short. What an amazing voice and calm guitar playing!
É assim no mundo inteiro. :)
I love the way he sings even with his eyes
"Como pode alguém sonhar
O que é impossível saber?"
O nível aqui sempre foi altíssimo! Rodrigo passa perfeitamente.

I can't put into words how much the cavalo album has helped me through tough times. It brings such a soothing, peaceful, and refreshing atmosphere into any situation.
i teared up a little bit. it's remeniscent of my dad's singing. just more on key hahaha. this set was a good way to wind down after a long day. i was thinking about work, but it didn't stress me out so much thanks to this performance. it was just so calming and sweet.
Only today I could understand why Amarante and his band resisted including the song Ana Júlia on the occasion of building their first album with Los Hermanos band! I could also understand why the irritation of both of them with the dissection of this song by the Brazilian media! They are much more than a radio ballad! There is an abyss between national culture (or the absence of it) with these guys! Congratulations Amarante! It is an honor to have artists like you in our country! Forte abraço.
A significant part of my playing and approach as a guitarist is truly influenced by this Tiny Desk Concert, the raw aspect of it and his decisions.
