  • What the best grading practices are for chemistry class and what students should do about it.
Grading should inform students of how well they understand chemistry. Many tests instead are punitive in nature and are difficult to draw meaningful feedback from. This is a huge weight on learning that leads students to focus on trivial details rather than core concepts.
To improve grading use standards based grading, reassessments, and eliminate participation points (hw, classwork, extra credit).
For students who can't change their grading system, make sure you provide feedback to yourself when studying by using retrieval practice. When studying concepts see if you can represent them using particle level diagrams, macroscopic (real life/lab), and symbolic representations.
Avoid learning algorithms without understanding why. Proportional reasoning instead of dimensional analysis can help with this.
