Thank you Pixar at Disney and the Animators behind the movie "Soul". They actually went out of their way to hire Andy Martin to play trombone and animate everything correctly... more or less. Still a couple of very nitpicky discrepancies but I guess we can let it slide... Get it? Especially since I missed a couple of small details myself, but I blame the faulty transciption I was reading because I don't like taking responsiblity for my own actions.

Andy Martin was the trombone player for the movie Soul. They let him improvise and they precisely matched the animation to his actual movements.
woah that’s so cool that they let him improvise; i wouldn’t expect that from disney since they’re so strict and corporate and stuff.
@@StarSCTEBunToaster Andy Martin has played on over 350 movie soundtracks including the trombone work at the start of monsters inc. He is a session legend as well as a top west coast big band jazz player. Very much the safest pair of hands you could get in that situation.
Hoyt Curtin's Johnny Quest brass section
They did the same with Coco - filmed a professional guitarist playing the songs and then copied the finger movements when animating
@@StarSCTEBunToaster technically Pixar, Disney just owns them
But still, in Encanto they animated almost every single musical instrument correctly, so they can do it too.
of course they got it right, the whole movie made insane progress in the field of animated instruments

My band director would probably be more mad that the kids stopped playing rather than made fun of her lol
My band director would be equally mad
Same. But not for the same reason. She made me play the drums for 45 min straight. No pause, no dropping the beat, no changing the beat, no using anything but base and snare for 45 min. I don't even play drums. She'd yell at me if I even thought of doing anything else but the basic beat. She's propably single handedly responsible to why most of my classmates chose to quit instruments.
@@eclipseifynightsong my band director would have been mad at everyone but would have also started teaching her personally after classes, my band director/music teacher was very much into looking for talented students and helping them hone their craft. my brother and i were among them, i learned violin while my brother learned the acoustic guitar, and she actually scouted us after we went for extra-curricular piano lessons as a club activity after school, we were slow at learning the piano so she had us try other instruments instead. unfortunately she passed away just a year later due to gross malnutrition (caused by an unverified illness).

Soul was very precise on musical instruments, I think they did tracking or just copied an actual trombone player
I think they did both I could be totally wrong though
I think they used motion capture for scenes that involved instruments, that or Disney has pretty talented animators.
@@MFS_Is_All_Of_MFS i mean, they did make Beauty and The Beast, so most likely both
Yeah .... They did not do motion capture. Or tracking. I am a 3D animator(don't bother looking at my RUclips channel everything is private). Pixar doesn't do motion capture. What they do is referencing someone from multiple angles. If you are a animator with previous experience with an instrument the better, but if not you still study the movements you put the keyframes copping the timing of the reference, then you look at the arches you can exagerate, then add anticipations, the correct ease in, ease outs and that's it. You adjust the curves for the automatic in-betweening that Maya makes. Its a really well though and manual and suttle exaggeration of real life, motion capture can't do that

Not just the trombone, but actually all instruments are correctly animated. The first time I watched the movie, I got so glad to see the drums animation matching the song.

it makes me so happy she loves what shes doing and it makes me so sad that she keeps being discouraged by others

Of course it’s animated correctly. Pixar doesn’t mess around even in Coco when Miguel plays the guitar he’s playing the correct notes. Damn you’re in school band? My condolences
Fun fact: when animating the piano keys, they had to create an entirely new computing system to calculate the weight of the piano players fingers in order to get the right sound. This along with a new hand tacking software to make it as accurate as possible.
Computing system as in a program or did they seriously create a whole new OS??

We've all had this moment once in our life OR will have it. That one moment where after years and years of practice and mastering our instrument, you take control and lose yourself in that moment and just sail with the notes. This movie emphasized it so well
Not a musician
The most occurring problem I’ve seen with animated brass instruments is the musician basically swallowing the mouthpiece
That's only for reed instruments and even then, they don't put the entire mouthpiece in their mouths.
@@theresachacon1122 unless your one of *those* kids as a Bb Clarinet player, this is very true
With Brass, they tend to forget that the mouthpiece is on your lips-
And with Woodwind, they just inhale the mouthpiece, when the closest you ever come to doing so is when playing high notes, of which you have to bite down farther in the reed, but even then half way is the absolute max
Pixar did so good with soul it’s amazing

It doesn’t surprise me that Disney is so true to detail like this. Coco’s guitar playing was accurate even to the vibration frequency of the strings. In Soul they actually mapped out the movement of the tendons in John Baptiste’s (the musician who did most of the music in Soul) hands as he played piano so they could make sure it looked right animated onscreen. For all its faults, Disney sure puts in the work for the important details in a story.
no they dint
I think it’s really important to note that although Pixar is part of Disney, this is Pixar’s stellar work, not Disney’s.
john baptiste??? thats crazy my section leader has a flute made by him/his company
I believe Pixar has almost always been the pioneer of 3D animation from a technical perspective. Though maybe they have fallen behind in originally of ideas or complexity of the story (To me, Elemental feels like the romantic plotline that was scapped from Zootopia), but Pixar walks out with new technology so other can jog.
Disney couldn't choreograph a fight to save their stocks in the market.
Pixar puts a lot of research and effort into making things like this accurate. It's this kind of attention to detail that makes Pixar even more awesome.
I'm a musician myself and seeing her play her instrument with such passion and joy was a feeling I know too well and when she said she wanted to quit it made me so mad cause talent ane passion like that shouldn't ever be ignored, the way she stands up and closes her eyes every time she plays is amazing to watch
The only animation studio to care enough about their art to correctly animate instruments. They also got the guitars in Coco correct.
Edit: WOW I made some people mad with my comment. I'm not gonna debate something over a comments section, but I will say that my point was about the studio as a whole, not the individual animators. If given the time and encouragment by the execs, I'm sure animators in more studios would have the same attention to detail.

Pixar has always stated that they will never use motion capture. I don’t know if they’ve stayed true to this sentiment, but as far as I know they use reference video, photo, or animation to help with the animation, but never directly use motion capture. That’s what makes this so inspiring and incredible!
The reason for this is that the last time they used motion capture, the Academy denied the film from being nominated for Best Animated Picture (although I don't remember which film it was.)
@@ctyoung0271 they never used it, if i remember happy feet used mocap and won over ratatouliie which didnt have mocap and was just a better movie overall.
That makes sense, for an animated movie, you kind of want some elements of cartoon movement, and animators can convey body language in ways than real people have a hard time replicating (and vice versa).

Every movie production team that includes a trombone in a movie should now be told "'Soul' got it right. Please stop with holding it wrong and showing the instrument as no real player would ever play the instrument."
i was always embarrassed of playing trombone it’s always felt like a "masculine" instrument and i never saw any female play it in my ensemble but this movie made me feel a little comfortable with playing it
masculine probably wasn’t the best word to use, but i couldn’t think of anything else.. ive always seen trombones be associated with guys
That's good! The trombone is a beautiful instrument.
I was the only tenor sax in band until I taught my friend to play it so she switched from clarinet. No instrument is masculine or feminine. True, most of our brass were boys but many of them were friends before band who wanted to hang out.
The most notable trombone we had in middle school became a drummer in high school and was even better (he switched because of his friends being in percussion.) I think of him almost every time I see a trombone though. He only had a finger (technically two fused on one side) and a thumb on each hand and knowing he could play an instrument or two at such a young age for me really showed me how inclusive music can really be.
It also cemented the reality of if someone really wants to accomplish something, nothing will stand in the way as long as the person themselves believes they can. Don't give up your instrument because you are worried about what it implies. Love the experience and if another instrument catches your eye, feel free to try it. I took piano lessons in elementary before I played tenor and when I stopped the latter, it was because I had no soul; I am a technical player, which doesn't work well with jazz.
When I was in band class the trombone player was a girl lol. The only other person I've seen play trombone in person was my friend will, and he had that perfect pitch thing that let him play and tune every instrument.
It’s because males have larger lungs than females, but my brother’s old marching band had a few girls doing the wind instruments too.

I love that an animated film is much more accurate depicting musical instruments than live action…
She stands up when she gets lost in the music. Such an amazing detail :D
This makes me super happy. Much respect to pixar!!
Pete Docter was very particular about getting Soul's musical scenes accurately, so they actually tracked jazz musicians and used it to animate the characters, and Jon Batiste, who wrote original compositions on the piano, actually played full sessions for their reference. It's remarkable the amount of effort they put into it really.
Brilliant. Good work to the animation team.
He's so good doing the trumpet! Keep up the great work!!
In animation we don't animate based on nothing, we always use reference. In a film environment like this for anything technically complicated we get people in and film high quality reference. For speaking / moving we usually film ourselves and use this as reference.
I like how people seem “surprised” when instruments in general are animated correctly. Like for this film, it’s like, the only thing that the animators have to get right lol
Detail wise I mean
Well, it's just that many people who happen to be executives or directors didn't care about these details, so there you go
Because a more often than not , the animation doesn't actually match what is being played...
"the only thing the animators need to get right" I know you aren't a 3d guy but what the film does ain't easy by any means, they have to articulate the rig down to each finger joint 30 times per second of animation
U don't know what you're talking about lol
making it sound easier than it is
I really love the detail of the trombone case. I know it’s simple, and sounds kinda silly, but its like the same case that I used to see everywhere in my middle school band hall and its super nostalgic for me

I am glad they did all the instruments accurate. They love music.
They got the piano playing perfect too! For a piano player it's nice to see it's not just some random hand and finger movements!
I used to play in my school band. Started in 6th grade. Left after sophomore year. Now that I'm a senior, thinking of bigger and better things, I realise I would give anything just to play with that group again. Trombone was never my favourite to listen to but I'm so glad I picked it up. I never knew they were the best years I could ever have.
So nice to see some actually good animation to match the music on my instrument
That’s the crazy thing with soul, everything, even during Joe Gardner’s “zone” improvisation, was animated perfectly down to the frame.
As a former trombone player (not professional just for school), I’m glad that they were accurate with how fast the characters arm was moving since you would realistically have to do that to quickly change notes, especially when going from B/F to E, D, or C
I was a first chair trombone, and seeing this just fills me with so much joy! Makes me miss those days.
As a fellow trombonist (in the making), I’m pleased to finally see that an animation studio FINALLY animated a trombone correctly and it wasn’t just slide between first and seventh positions 😂
A movie about music can’t be wrong about how instruments work
*I saw a behind the scenes clips about Soul. No tracking was used. They just studied musicians very carefully, in order to animate the characters. 🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️*
It’s so cool to see a Disney movie have real slide movements for a scene. Usually, they would just put what ever sounds right then have people expose them for trying to play The Entertainer but instead spamming the keys on the piano.
Wow this makes me wanna bust out my old trombone again! I haven't played that thing in years but I used to love just playing around to see what sounded cool

The hardest part of playing the trombone is not the articulation… *it’s reaching to the 7th position on the slide perfectly*

I am glad that they finally animated whatever instruments in this movie :)
Pixar has always been obsessed with getting little details right. I remember holly hunter spent 3 months learning military pilot lingo so she could use accurate terminology during the plane crash/SOS scene
i loved the music-centered parts of this movie, and really all of the segments in real life. the animation, emotions and storytelling were just on point! but the soul world bored me so much :(

The video description is just pure *Gold*
As a beginner trombonist, I am glad that the animators took the time to see how to put together a trombone, what the case looks like (on the outside) and how you play it.
On faster passages the animation lags behind, but ti still gets there. Better than 99% of musical animation.
That's what sets apart Pixar from illumination (besides Pixar having actually great stories with an animation quality that improves on itself): they do care enough about what they are telling to actually do their research.
