What would be the minimum amount needed to get started with buying/selling options? I don't have 100 shares of any stock currently or $5000 in my portfolio so do i just save and invest till I have appropriate collateral? or can I buy calls and make money right now?

I have a question to ask, I’m noticing that selling a single put option has a higher collateral requirement, meaning I’m trying with MSTR a sell put for ($190 strike for Nov 1st) has a high collateral, it was like $17-18,000 collateral compared to selling two puts at the same strike price ($190) but for different expiration dates (Nov 1st and Nov 8th) with lower collateral which came out to like $1,700-$2000 premium and collateral of an estimate of like $2700. i wonder why

My point is than when Market crashes and you own tons of shares (bc all these puts will get assigned) and say stock like NVDA drops to like 70-80$ (imagine major indexes go down say 40-50%) and then you already deep under water. yeah you start selling calls but you won't get you investment back anytime soon. I don't want to be negative - I'm just saying nothing is SAFE!

If you want to own the stock, you shouldn't care. That's the entire point. If its close to being ITM right at expiration, chances are, you'll be losing money if you're closing the position unless you roll out.
@@montmib fundamentally it can, realistically, it wont. There's math behind it obviously but its almost never happens because of extrinsic value. If you really wanna get into the weeds you can. But i've been trading options for almost 4 years now and never have I been assigned before expiration. I always just let it expire for the full premium. The same goes for alot of traders.

I believe sell to open, because you are selling to possibly open a position. Sell to close means you are selling a put, to close a put that you bought.
@@abinasroy Selling a put just needs collateral/cash/margin whereas selling a call requires stock. It's called cash secured put (to acquire stock) and covered call (to sell stocks)
I don’t see exercise option for short put leg. It’s only available for long leg. How do you exercise put credit spread by buying underlying share if there’s no exercise option?

When selling puts, is there a risk of getting trapped before being able to sell your covered calls? I guess then you'd have to hold spy \ qqq till they recovered?
Yes, but chances are less since SPY and qqq are index based. But you can sell covered call in the next month/year so there is no concept of getting trapped in index. Most probably we will be ok to generate some income through covered call or capital gains over a period of time

Collateral should still be 36k maybe they are stating your max loss as 2k but if you try to actually buy the option the Collateral will be 36k or so

Premiums on these are not worth tying up that much capital with CSP, especially when the share price is this high
So you need to have like 60.000$ in free cash in your account to run this strategy. Because strike was 500 something
