    The role of Veruca Salt was quite a stretch for Julie Dawn Cole. Her family was poor, and she was very much the opposite of a rude, spoiled brat. Being such a genuinely nice person, she often had to be encouraged to ramp up Veruca’s insufferable personality. I think she did a splendid job portraying a character so different from herself.

    Gene himself had the idea and actually fought to the limp out and the forward roll. He said that from that moment on, the audience would never be able to trust Willy Wonka.

    Denise Nickerson (Violet) apparently was in the running to be Regan the possessed little girl in The Exorcist but her parents pulled her out of the running after learning what she would have had to do. And all I could think when learning this was "how to you see Willy Wonka and NOT ask Julie Dawn Cole to play a possessed child" LOL

      It's all the more startling that Denise Nickerson's parents pulled her out of *The Exorcist* when you realize that they permitted her to play the title role in *Lolita, My Love,* a musical version of Nabokov's *Lolita* intended for Broadway. The show closed on the road, so it never got to Broadway, but a surviving audio tape reveals that Denise was a great singer. It's a shame that she didn't get her own number in *Willy Wonka.*

    the reason all the stuff in Wonka's office was 1/2 was because he had no heir. Since Charlie became his heir, Wonka can add the other 1/2 of his stuff to his office and become complete.

    The reason we got Tim Burton's "Charlie &..." was that Roald Dahl reportedly hated Gene Wilder's movie: He didn't like musicals, didn't like the Loompas being Keebler Elves (they were African pygmies in the book), didn't like the "Good day, sir!" twist at the end, and he had scripted the '71 movie thinking mad, twittery Spike Milligan would play Wonka. Producers kept promising Dahl a "real" remake for years, but once Tim came in, it quickly went off the rails...Gene Wilder's sly madness is still the True Wonka.

    • @latenightswithsammy
      @latenightswithsammy  9 месяцев назад +5

      Interesting! I've seen both takes on "Wonka," and by far, I'd say Wilder's portrayal and contribution to the character is WAY more interesting. It makes sense that at the point of re-opening the factory, Wonka would've gathered a rather bizarre madness / awkwardness with society, let alone children

    • @ericjanssen394
      @ericjanssen394 9 месяцев назад

      @@latenightswithsammy When Johnny Depp’s version came out in the 00’s, everyone made the same lame 90’s-headline joke about “Wonka’s just like Michael Jackson!” Tim obviously took that joke and ran with it, with Depp’s awkwardness and pale-faced design, but Dahl always wanted a slightly mad character who could be just as rude back to beastly rude children like the other four.

    I saw this when it first came out in the movie theaters. I just fell in love with Gene Wilder after this. It was such a surprise. The girl who turns into a giant blueberry was so familiar to me, and for some reason I couldn't figure it out until after the internet was a thing. During a binge watch of the Dark Shadows soap opera from the 1960s, she was there. Denise Nickerson was there. Dark Shadows was only on for 5 years and was without its favorite vampire for the first year. The show ended before this movie was out.

    Yes, it reminded me too of “The Wizard of Oz” and “Mary Poppins,” especially in the production aspects.
    The hands that take the visitors’ coats derives from Jean Cocteau’s “Beauty and the Beast” (1947), where live hands in the wall hold the torches that light the castle’s entrance corridor, a very eerie scene.
    The joke you laughed at early in the movie was originally a Jack Benny joke. Part of his persona was that he was stingy. A thug with a gun says, “Your money or your life,” and Benny responded, “Quiet, let me think.”

    I can only guess why everything is in half in Wonka's office - because he had an opening for someone else and was only one-half of what he wanted. To really be sure you have to read the books. Back in the day when video recorders were only in the hands of professionals, the only way to "watch" the movie again was to read the book. The sequel was Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator - and the books are a lot of fun!!!

    • @latenightswithsammy

    1. I first saw it when I was 10.
    2. Ronald Dahl the book author was a well known LSD user. (you can see why)
    3. If you look carefully, a little girl gets wacked in the chin by the flip top counter.
    4. I suspect Wonka knew which children would win the tickets (lessons for our behalf) because Slugworth was at the scene almost immediately.
    5. Many people (especially women) seem to get a creepy feeling from Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka.
    6. This is the only roll Peter Ostrum/Charlie. He's now an Veterinarian.
    7. After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp, then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied
    that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know what's real and what isn't. Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" and Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth."
    8. Fun fact: Veruca/Julie Dawn Cole didn't have any adult with her when they went to Germany to film the movie so Gene Wilder himself stepped in to make sure she was taken care of.😎
    9. You can get away with anything in a musical.

      #4 - good point!
      #5 - very interesting
      #7 - WOW! That's actually brilliant on Wilder's part ... and pretty much encompasses the entire factory portion, we have no idea or confirmation that the children are "alright." I was surprised how open ended the film was, and how fast it moved
      #8 - that's awesome of Wilder to do :)

    Sammy, fantastic reaction. I'm so happy you have read the book! There actually IS a sequel to the book; he later wrote "Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator" where basically they take the elevator, pick up the family.....and then Wonka takes the elevator into outer space! I remember not liking the book as I liked all of Dahl's other books; it would make a better cartoon, probably, then a live action thing. Great analysis of Gene Wilder's bizarre, haunted (and very intelligent!) performance! I too associate this in a direct lineage to Mary Poppins and The Wizard Of Oz and very few others. Anyways, great to see you, I LOVE Roald Dahl, both his kids stories (which I read when I was a kid)....and his adult stories (which I also read when I was a kid! 😄)

    i figure each thing he showed them were tests, which seemed to be customized to get rid of each kid.. the glutton went for the chocolate river.. chewing gum girl went for the flavor thing.. quinten the tv thing.. violet the gold.. so that leaves the tunnel, the bubbles, the contract, the illusion entrance.. and the suds ride.. and charlie went for the bubbles thanks to his grandpa.. hmm...i guess because his grandpa was always acting like charlie could fly high.. but charlie had low self esteem.. and the tunnel in particular, and to a lesser extent the illusion entrance were kind of scary.. the suds ride just seemed kind of fun i guess.. i figure wonka just wanted to see how charlie handled fear, since i figure he was only really considering charlie to take over for him, and fear and self confidence were charlies only real problems, aside from being poor.. which would be tempted by selling the gobstopper, or possibly the golden eggs.. which of course would be next to impossibly to be stealing a golden egg laying giant duck.. which is why i think that was for violet obviously, and her dad to try to buy.. but the gobstopper seemed mostly intended to test charlie, since he was told that the money would go a long way to helping him and his family.. so, that just leaves fear and self confidence for charlies issues.. which is mostly what the tunnel horrors were meant to expose.. good thing charlie didnt scream and jump into the void.. he wouldv drowned and been flushed out into the river

    Ah, one of the only movies I've read the book with.
    Here in the UK growing up, I remember Cadbury's selling replica Wonka Bars with golden tickets to win £25,000 or something. I never really went out of my way to buy them. I doubt those sort of prizes anyways. Still a fantastic movie and a fantastic book. The Tim Burton remake on the other hand.... not so much. However, I did like how they updated the personalities of the kids to suit modern times.

      If this was the case, why didn't Wonka simply invite Charlie to tour his factory, rather than running a fraudulent (and therefore presumably illegal) international contest? And practically, how could Wonka have insured that the ticket "intended" for Charlie didn't go to someone else? If he was truly spying on Charlie, he would surely have known that Charlie never bought candy bars, so he should have known that an international contest giving away golden tickets in candy bars would be the worst way imaginable of ensuring that Charlie would receive one.
