Lyrics:
You drift in with the wind and use a library computer to check in.
“You can’t sleep at the table, ma’am-you’re scaring the kids.”
The fall’s getting cold. You try to catch salt air in an envelope,
so you can send it home, sit by the bay alone, sun on your skin.
Another day up in flames.
Another cop that knows your name.
These assholes always sound the same.
Madelyn, I don’t think that I’ll see you again.
Madelyn, I love you, but we both know how this ends.
Madelyn, the tide is coming in.
You pull out a cig, imagine the air in your lungs as gasoline.
Light the fucker up-some people get all the luck, but some gotta live.
I can’t find an address; nobody seems to know where you’re living at.
I got you a birthday gift, and I wanna send it with pictures of my kids.
Another day up in flames.
Another year that looks the same.
Madelyn, I don’t think that I’ll see you again.
Madelyn, I love you but we both know how this ends.
Madelyn, I heard that the tide is coming in.
You’re lost in the gray with two broken legs, trying to swim.
Watch the clouds
empty out,
flood the ground.
Try to sleep
in the steam
from the street.

This song is the perfect synthesis of everything I love about this band: it has the youthful energy of Upsides/Suburbia, the anthemic songwriting of TGG, and the lyrical maturity of NCTH and Sister Cities. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album 🎸❤️
Couldn’t agree more. Beautiful way to put it!
If only blink 182 were capable of this self awareness.
The Wonder Years are about to drop one of their best albums to date and I’m calling it right here right now.
every album is one of their best albums for different reasons at different times tbh i just can’t wait to see what this one is all about
@@reed2464 except for sister cities they have atleast been solid
@@Playboigerm even that album is fantastic lyrically at the very least. wasn't crazy about production but still a really great album.
@@ZacBianco eh even NCTH had that maturity. One thing I will give sister cities is the marketing. Like holy shit that’s genius
I think this may be their last album. They have been expressing their exhaustion from the touring life and how it alienated them from their personal lives for albums now. Their Christmas song they released in December is another reiteration of that sentiment. Then they choose this song as their first single for their album and they teased this song by showing just “Madelyn, I love you, but we both know how this ends.” We all know what it means in context of the song, but I think it was also them professing their love for the music they make and touring, but also saying they may be growing too old for it. Now, I may be reading too into things, but soupy was an English teacher and English teachers LOVE finding hidden meanings so I’m sure they love MAKING hidden meanings too. When it comes to art and literature and music, every piece is carefully chosen.
Totally get The Greatest Generation vibes from this song and I’m so ready for a full album of this
I have been counting down the minutes till this launched and every second was worth the wait.
dan is truly one of the best lyricists of our generation god i love twy so much
This is a gut punch. I hope Madelyn here's this and reaches out to them. That feeling of wanting to help someone and having no way to even tell them you want to is heartbreaking.
I absolutely dislike the people saying they're back on top, dude they never fell off. They just made an album that didn't resonate with YOU. Always quality, true fan till the end!
Truth. Sister cities is one of my favorites.
@@timorenstein681 Same. That record around around is a 10/10 for me.
@@valokiller2788 Exactly, every album they make they get better. It just isn't what EVERYONE wants to hear all the time thats why it's ranked low.. bummer
@@lookforthegood1 so true. It's a shame that a lot of people will just be like "well this doesn't sound like (insert record here) so I hate it" without even giving it a chance or appricating it for that it is. One of my favorite things about TWY is the progression of their music from record to record. That's the reason they are one of my favorite bands and the first time I listened to sister city's I had goose bumbs durring the entire album. But hopefully people will be appeased by this one. I know I'm loving what I'm hearing so far.
Well said my dude
im gonna puke cry and shit my pants
I wasn't a huge fan of Sister Cities, but this is the sound i've missed the most. It feels like welcoming a old friend back home.
My band director absolutely loves this band. So I know he's probably going crazy right now!
This is the most beautiful encapsulation of their musical journey. I can hear _The Greatest Generation_ and _Sister Cities_ in here, almost like what _No Closer to Heaven_ would've been without the writer's block.
And wherever Madelyn is, I hope she's well, and I hope she hears this song before she goes.
Yeah, it's pretty straight forward, but those albums stand out the most as precursors to what this next album could sound like. I'm pretty excited. Saw the livestream from their show at Boston where they said they'd release my new fav Wonder years album this year, and was patiently waiting for what they had in store.
@@CCovers1 NCTH is my favorite!
@@CCovers1 I meant no disrespect to _No Closer to Heaven._ I was simply referring to the band's well documented lack of satisfaction with how that album turned out. To me, this song sounds like it came straight off _NCtH,_ but I hear a confidence in the performance of this song that I don't think they had in _NCtH._ I actually honestly hope that this album is a _No Closer to Heaven 2.0_ of sorts.
@@CCovers1 It was my favorite era of The Wonder Years music too for me.
@@pibb2474 they don’t like ncth? That may be favorite album by them. Sister cities I was never able to really get into but there’s a couple of songs on it I enjoy.
Absolutely beautiful song. Excited for the upcoming album news.
Might be their best song yet honestly
god i havent been this happy since sora was announced for smash. I missed this sound.
This is huge and I'm already obsessed
YES WONDER YEARS OMG
Beautiful.
YAAAAAASSSS
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!
Tied for my favorite band ever.
They're back on top
Always have been.
Melhor banda. Estou viciado nessa música. Me lembrou a pegada do No Closer to heaven 💙 The Wonder Years nunca decepciona 💙
Every new song just impresses me a little more than the last
I’ve never needed something so much and not known until I had it.
Oh hell yeah
Yessss, I've been in dire need of new The Wonder Years music❤❤❤
The Wonder Years Forever.
Can't wait for this to drop.
Really great stuff, as always! I've been listening to a probably unhealthy amount of Upsides and Suburbia recently and have been craving new Wonder Years, so this really hits the spot
Welcome back
Very pleasant surprise to see this in my subscription feed
Fuck yeah nothing makes me happier than a new TWY release
I love this. Gonna have to catch the tour 💯
I love you guys so much.
🥺❤️
I'm amazed they didn't call this song "Madelyn Pt. 2"
Excited for the new music, especially if it's anything like the greatest generation.
The Wonder Years Forever
I like the sound ❤️
LETS FUCKIN' GOOOOOOOO
Yesss it’s been too long!! 🍕🔥🖤👌🏻
This is so good
🥺🥺
I kept getting a good amount of Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World from this song.
That fucking bridge 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Luv u soupy
TWY at their best
If you like emotional damage listen to Madelyn I don't remember which album it's on but it definitely shows the growth and progression of adulthood
The Greatest Generation
Blinding 👍
Play at 2x speed to make Soupy sound like Patrick Stump
the Madelyn arc continues
This is incredible! Please tell me we are getting a new album!!!!
Yes we are. Soupy said so, at least at the last Philly show in late March
Said the same at the show in Cleveland and said it was gonna be our favorite album yet and I just know he's right
@@joebarrett3137 that’s what I assumed. My friend who went with me was surprised when he heard them announce it in Philly, and he went to the one in Hartford as well. Didn’t know if Soupy just announced it in Philly before the rest of the world knew
@@noahcaplan7681 yeah the crowd was pretty hype. Sounds like he let all the people who could make the shows the inside scoop. I can't wait
@@joebarrett3137 yea, and he wasn’t kidding that this album is going back to classic TWY if the rest of the album sounds like this
TWY did it again…
Someone please tell me who Madelyn is in relation to Soupy. Obviously she's come up a few times now. Thnx in advance.
I've always imagined her being his cousin for some reason
Ang ganda gago :c
TEH NAMAN
Am I alone in thinking the mixing is off? I can barely hear Soups. Other than that this sounds incredible and I'm so happy to have one of my all time favorite bands back
lyrics are bit clunky (cringed at library computer) and there's something detached or unrealistic, not real about the contents. not the tightest thematically, unfortunately since everything else about the song is working really well
I love this band but I really don't care about Madelyn LOL
This whiny middle age man vibe kinda getting old
Zzzzzzzzz
Meh.
