I've got one if this some month ago and have to say their customer service is exceptional. I connected to a Mercedes E350 and you know how picky are European car with generic scanners. In my case I couldn't see the ABS module. I contacted them and within a week they developed an updated file that allowed me to successfully see live data on the ABS module. They even asked me for a follow up days later to make sure that worked!!
yes that is why I mentioned about how they followed up with me after a year when I denied them at first. just the fact they tracked that was impressive that they pay attention!
I bought one some months ago bc no one wanted to work on my Promaster and heard dealership was $$$$$ & nightmare. Contacted seller of Ram PM as to why he was selling so cheap, "270 mi on used 2018 and dlrshp told me to come get it, that they couldn't fix it!" I got mine running and showing no codes. Not finished putting it all back together. In driveway In Wis, doesn't help. Bought '08 Highlander to replace PM for my winter trip(s) south. It statrted acting up but I got it running again using the D-7 Xtool and I couldn't be happier. Just the Highlander fix mor than paid for the Xtool !! Bless you Matt !!! I want to learn more !! Wish my daughter was still in Aurora so I could come sweep your floors or something Matt !
PS I've messed with cars since late 60's, worked as helper in garages ( city squad cars at one point before trucking) and finally I am forced to learn electronics bc of lemon Ram But now I am happy about it and finding Matt is huge !! Maybe I can learn enough to get out of driving semi !
I saw the XTool D7 demonstrated on another RUclips Channel, and like yourself, the host gave rave comments. I liked the features and capabilities, but it was the bi-directional testing, and remote control, capabilities that sold me. I jumped, no regrets. Well, one regret. Up here in Snow Country all of my toys are put away until Car Season, usually min-April. So, I haven't had a chance to play with the D7 yet, other than taking it out of the case. But, soon, very soon I will be breaking the pony cars out and on the newer cars I will begin to play (1997 Honda Del Sol SI, and 2020 Shelby GT500). There is not a thing wrong with the ODB2 capable cars, to include our daily driven SUVs. But, if nothing else I want to begin getting familiar with this tool - just because. Thank you for an excellent review.
I bought a D7 a few months ago because I was looking for a reasonably priced replacement for my old Snap-on brick. WOW! It's incredible. Still learning all the functions.
I still have my Snap-on brick! Haven't used it in a while, as I don't drive my older suburban much anymore, but it had some bidirectional control that none of my readers had. (I actually stopped buying the readers and bought a cheap $6 program for my phone, and a OBD bluetooth setup and did pretty well with that. I've also purchased a BlueDriver setup which I've used recently to track down some airbag related stuff. But I keep itching to get a bidirectional unit for my newer cars.
Iv had my xtool d8 bt for two years now .... Love it . I tried to tell people this tool is a high level scan tool that very helpful for diagnostic and trouble shooting ... Thanks matt for putting this out there so people can see the results of it capability s ...
Matt just saying .... I've watched many videos on the xtool d8 bt And you are the only one that presents this tool for what it is ... Please continued to go further with more information as you are the only one that can go into deeper details about this tool ... Thanks
I’m just your basic diyer with decent mechanical aptitude. I’m now retired and certainly can’t afford to take my vehicles anywhere to have repairs done. Currently I have a BlueDriver but desperately need to upgrade to a serious scan tool. I’m going to buy this one strictly based on your review as I respect you as a mechanic. Appreciate your videos!
Hey I gotta question, if you did end up purchasing this one.. compared to the blue driver , what are your thoughts.? If anyone can help, would greatly appreciate. 👍
Back again from your fuel trim diag videos!! I'm in the market for a proper, pro level scantool and trying to research them all is pretty effing overwhelming...but when I saw ur review and given my implicit trust in your opinion/integrity in these matters, well, let's just say I need not research anymore...I'm sold...thanks man!
@polymetric for starters the D8 I own has a Bluetooth dongle, which is much more convenient working under the hood and reading data. I find my Autel MS906BT and MS908SP with a J2534 box to be much more intuitive.
@@zxcdarel The first 3 years are free updates. After that, it would still continue to work as it always did before. It just wouldn't have any new content added.
WOW!!!!! all that for less than $400 with 3 years of free updates. I am going to buy one to keep in my truck with me at all times. Xtool is going to sell a boat load of them. Thanks Matt
Thank you. It seemed like I would be spending all day trying to figure out which scan tool would be my first. After seeing your video I knew this one will be it. It's on the way here now, and I am on the way to your channel to watch more of your videos.
I've had a D7 for over a year now, and although I'm pretty sure I paid more for it than $400, it's generally been well worth it. Not all sunshine and roses, but more good than bad by far. I own a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer 2WD, and initially, it was awesome for that, but somehow after a software update, it decided that Chevrolet no longer made a 2WD version of the Trailblazer for the 2004 model year, and I contacted support about it, but I've never gotten any resolution to that, that I'm aware of - I haven't checked recently because I've been immersed in dealing with several other family members cars, for which it has been very useful (except for my wife's brand new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, which isn't recognized yet). The best answer I've gotten from support on the missing 2004 Chevy Trailblazer RWD, was to "buy the D8", but their website manual doesn't list the RWD version as a supported model either. When my subscription runs out, I'm more likely to just buy another one, rather than renew, because I expect to have well worn this one by then...
D7 is not subscription based afaik. Just update stop. You can use it full functionality years, years for free.. If someone has opposite knowledge - inform us here.
Powerful tool! I own a D7. I wish there was a way for a novice DIY like myself to learn its powerful capabilities. Currently, you have a to be mechanic to understand what function to use to diagnose a problem.
I have the D7 and have been very happy with the unit. The only thing I wish xtool would improve is the graphing feature. The live data scaling is auto ranging and can not be manually set. Moreover, although you can zoom in 3 levels on the x and y axis, it won't zoom in low enough to look at say oxygen voltage range of 0-1 V. In playback mode it generally scales much better but is a pain to switch modes. Wish they would add manual scaling capability. In the report tab, there is a data view button that is a mystery to me as can find no info on the functionality. It's been a great unit for capabilities and value. Nice review and learned something new with the remote feature. Cheers!
Might not hurt to contact them and suggest that. It might be a small enough operation that they'd actually see it, especially given it's a semi-professional tool where feedback actually needs to be heard
I did not show the graphing but yes I agree. it’s also my complaint on the Autel as well. and merging more than 2 PIDs is virtually useless. for me, graphing is a major major consideration and I do wish more manufacturers paid more attention to it.
great video also i bought a blank key fob on ebay the stealership wanted 90 to program it. bought this tool and programed the key fob in 2 minutes time. already a 3rd of the way to paying for it.
I’ve been following this guys channel for a long time. I very rarely post comments but the amount of valuable information he gives is incredible! Thank you for sharing!! Keep these videos coming
This is so cool, I had actually got this scan tool on black Friday of last year (2022). I'm just now learning how to use it or finding the time to. I actually came across this video when you first put on youtube. Also, I thought it was neat how out of all them scanners this is what I picked and I got it for a little over 300 new. Thank you brother, I have learned a lot from your videos!
Hey Matt. Greetings from Ontario. I've owned a D7 for a little while now and with every new update, that tool just gets better and better. I've had fantastic customer support with xtool as well. I also have the A30m. It works pretty good for the price too.
@SchrodingersBox thanks for reviewing this product, I've had my eye on it for at least 6 months now. Do you know if the bidirectional testing works on 2024 model vehicles?
I have the d8. Great tool. It's done everything well so far. I went with the d8 because at the time it was advertised as being CAN FD compatible. I don't know if the d7 is. Both can do alot for the advanced diy mechanic. Xtool accidentally added topology on a previous d8 update so that's awesome 👍From what I hear it's only available on the higher end models. It's not supposed to be on the d8 so don't expect to have it if you buy a new one
@polymetric2614 it's just a feature that displays all the modules the vehicle has when you do a complete vehicle scan. Kind of a visual aid that displays all the modules and network. It shows the network layout, scan progress, and if there are any modules not communicating or with faults. Nice feature to have but you don't have to have it.
I have the D7. Works great However, on my 2015 Roush Stage3 supercharged Mustang It doesn’t recognize my PCM. So I use VIN. At it states that its aftermarket emissions , works fine on my 2019 Mustang GT perfectly. I’ve had the Roush from new with 4 miles on it.
My D7 has an issue connecting to my 2015 Roush stage3 Mustang. I can force it but it sees the emmissions as. “Aftermarket “. and shows the transmission as an automatic when it’s a standard. I’ve had this from brand new. With 4 miles on it. No issues connecting to my 2019 Mustang GT. Great tool other than this one issue
I bought one of these new Xtool D7 scanners and it would not even recognize/connect to my 2020 Mazda 3 car! I took it back and bought an Autel MK808s which connected great and is way better is every way!
I called it 2 years ago and some people didn't like it: Cheap full functionality scanners are coming! A scanner's hardware is run of the mill and off the shelf. Software is the only thing that matters and it's not hard to reverse engineer what others already did.
When are you going to do a review of the updated xtool d7s. It is updated of the xtool d7. Almost a xtool d8.Which cost double the tool d7s. Thanks for the review.
I may do that however I just reviewed the TopDon premium scan tool and the VDIAG circuit tool so i need the waves to settle before doing any more reviews.
I got a D9 pro last year to go along with my 14.4 Modis.... The D9 pro BT (Bluetooth) is very similar to the D7 software wise, it was hard to make a choice but I liked how I can be in the house getting dinner started, while I keep an eye on engine temperature etc with the Bluetooth. I also like that I don't have to sit in the car to actuate stuff, especially if the interior is real nasty 😂 I've plugged it into quite a few vehicles. The Xtool is good value and I'm basically happy with it but found it slow to bring up VIN screen on vehicles that don't self identify 😴 I've also had topology not recognize modules that I know are there and offer to turn off only 4 injectors on a V6 Caravan, so if something seems missing consider that. It does do a lot of tests and it's helped saved the day to help rule in/out issues. I would buy again and they do tons of updates.
@@SchrodingersBox thanks, I forgot to ask how you got your scanner to hook up to your computer? Did you need to download something? I could see this being fun to play a joke on the old man 😏 One thing I do find somewhat concerning these days is how hacker's could attack the scan tools themselves and get them too shut down vehicles, or do other "strange stuff" with this type of connectivity 🤔
The software is already on the tool. You also can’t control any bidirectional functions that affect vehicle safety on ANY scantool while it’s driving. For example if car is not in park you cannot increase rpm.
I've had the D7 for some years now and I can confirm this tool is a great asset for any DIY who is willing to learn. The free three year updates was a great selling point for me too. You did a nice job with the review and keeping the video at 15:00. That's a hard thing to do. The only bad thing is, your going to get a thousand questions asking: Does this work for (insert a specific vehicle here) ?
When your free updates are over if the tool doesn't get fresh updates within 30 days it won't work anymore, so i don't know how that's gonna work out . My d7 will work for 30 days without updating it then it says must install latest updates to continue
Wow, if I didn't already own the D7, your video would make me want to buy one BUT after my experience with it, about the only thing I was able to use if for on my 2007 FJ Cruiser was programing a key. Yes, it gave me some readings that were of some help, like transmission temperature but my codes are inconsistent and lights are still on on the dash. It runs fine but I'm always worried driving it. The manufacturer of the D7 has not been helpful AND I would not buy it today based on my experiences with the product or lack of customer service. I've also been to 5 different mechanics, none of them fixed it....that's why I bought the thing in the first place, thinking maybe I could find something. Yet, it appears I'm not any smarter than the 5 mechanics who didn't fix the problem. They all just loaded the parts cannon but didn't fix anything. Even had one dummy that replaced the brake light switch because he claimed that would fix the dash lights. And my wife wonders why I want a pre-computerized vehicle!
sorry to hear your experience. it definitely wasn’t my experience using the tool- at least, so far. I can tell you that all of my DIY level scan tools each have some level of apparent incompatibility with various cars and that’s why I have so many. I requested a tech person from XTOOL scan these comments and give some feedback.
the xtool a30m is a blue tooth dongle version of the d7 (it might be missing a few special functions and remote control im not for sure) and cuts cost down too $175 because you have to use your own phone/tablet,the only complaint i have is the live data graphing kinda slow but that might just be my phone being slow, and unable to graph multiple items but its the best bang for the buck still
Considering the D7. Appreciated your video. Trying to find information on how the tool would be serviced. According to xToolUSA, you buy from China and deal with them. Reviews have been favorable, but no one has commented on the process of dealing with China other than a few negative comments w/o resolution. Anyone worked with China?
I have 1 of these-works decent, its bat charges when plugged into to vehicle too. only thing is slow to display real time data especially if i scroll down-up.
Totally!!! The first time I ever got a scan took 10 years ago I was hooked for good. In fact it led to this whole channel. I was mesmerized being able to just see data from a cars computer even when I had no idea what any of it was lol
Hello I have the A30M by Xtool the little brother to that one for the most part bidirectional and bluetooth that runs off of android phone and I think it runs on apple too. I currently have it on my Samsung chromebook tablet, which has a screen recorder with sound not thru the xtool device. You did not show the graphing mode of the o2 sensors, and it was in that mode I could not get the recording function on the xtool or it was not there. So the tablet allowed me to watch o2 sensors, how accurate well it is sluggish but the video in the screen helps. One other thing the A30M is geared for DIY homeowner and it has lifetime updates too. Yes being retired I could not justify the 400 coin but 200 coin seemed reasonable. Wait till you get use to it, it gets easier to use, it is a learning curve. The remote thing yeah mine doesn't have that, but the remote thing it would need to be connected to a phone for the remote to function.
I've enjoyed your channel for a number of years. But just a DIY'er. I've run into the need to retract parking brakes on a brake job. Will this do that? Thank you for for your clear and very concise instruction.
I just read at the website that it has this function, but doesn't work on all cars. You'll need to contact the company to ask them if your car is covered for this function.
Ah that very well may be true. And thats true for ALL bidirectional scantools. Just because a function is showing doesn’t mean it works on all cars. I get tons of failures to do commands on my Autel and Autoenginuity but sometimes one works where the other won’t.
I have the D8 ... It's a pretty great tool; but it was $700. It's particularly good a making IMMO keys and pulling codes for keys; I'm not sure if the D7 is as capable or not on keys. They also have one called A30M, and it's basically the same software (mostly), but it uses your phone instead of a tablet, and it's under $200.
Done keys on my camry and 2018 ram with the d7 but on the ram I needed 12+8 cable with star connector, so yes d7 can do keys but does not have the option of adding kc100, kc501 and ks-1
Very interesting. I am curious about the EEPROM functions and if the tool allows you to dump the memory of controllers, to save it and then restore it to a new module (like Forscan does for Ford), or even allow you to change memory. Thank you for the review.
Matt THANKS for this vid im resrchng/learning about these BiDir scantools now i want/need one your vid is the best on this xtool (carecare nut and others DONT show the tool just say buy it) I ordered a D7S & played w it seemed to do a TON for my 1997 GM (noticed here for u as well w GMC) but did nothing for an 01 Honda so i returned it... Matt what other Amazon/lower price range scanners are good to get... Autel ? Foxwell ? Thanks
Thanks again Matt for a great video. I purchased the D7 on Black Friday. I’ve been watching your channel a long time. It would be nice to see more diagnostics using this tool. Thanks
Hi again Matt. I’m trying to do a cylinder air fuel ratio test on my 2018 Honda Pilot. The d7 has the function but I guess I’m doing something wrong. The newt gdi engines use this test to check the fuel injectors. This would be a good topic for your channel.
Hey Matt. About to take my D7 out of the box finally to check some fuel delivery issues on my wife's car. Very excited. Do you have any updates? Any new tricks you've learned for it? Any shortcomings you've uncovered? It'd be hard to complain given the price, but I was just curious if you had anything to add. Thanks again for doing what you do and how you do it. You are appreciated man.
@@SchrodingersBox Used it for a few hrs today and I love it. Took a while trying to figure out how to actuate everything, but that's just first date jitters. Overall, I'm very impressed with its capabilities.
Hi matt . I really enjoy both your pay channel and your RUclips channel. I trying to catch up on all the videos in order over the years . That gonna take a bit. Question my current scanner charges me money per year to have bi detection . Is there a fee on this scanner for the bi direction controls . Ty so much for helping so many people.
There is an update fee/ it’s pretty nominal but it does not affect bidirectionality ability. If your scanner requires a fee to retain bidirectional function I would say that’s pretty crappy!!!!
@@SchrodingersBox I agree and it graphs fine and works great but the ecu coding and bi directions controls cost 50 per year per manufacturer so working on 2-5 car week as a 2nd small job kinda sticks so I will laugh out loud :) at buying the newest model I think is the X tool D8 and I use it just for bi direction control . FYI if anyone thinking a buying a think-car scanner then be aware there a fee for bi direction control . I was the dummy didn’t read the small print ;) .
Outstanding presentation, and I sensed that your validation was absolutely amazing. Can you check and see if the GM 2017 SS (American version of the Australian Holden) is covered with this D7. I have looked at so many reviews and comments, and very glad I ran across yours! I subscribed and also really look forward to checking out your other presentations!
I heard good things about the D7, now they've come out with the D8. But I'm not a pro, I'm a DIYer and as soon as possible I will be getting the D7. Sadly, I don't have the funds at the moment.
Just a follow up on my XTool D7 I purchased less than a year ago. After downloading the latest updates a few weeks ago, it turned off and will not turn back on. I tried various chargers, wall outlets, and I even tried plugging it into my car's OBD 2 port, but nothing. I contacted various "customer service" reps both by phone and email, yet not one reply. I'm not cautioning against buying this scanner, but make sure you're purchasing through an authorized seller. I bought mine on eBay from a "trusted" seller with thousands of reviews who apparently stopped selling on eBay shortly after my purchase, (judging by the date of their ratings). Turns out my 1 year warranty is worth exactly dick. Lesson learned. It's money I couldn't really afford to lose, but it won't happen again.
Sorry to hear that. I use mine still with no issues. I am surprised they haven’t responded to you- I and others have reported very good customer service from them.
Does it show the PID numbers on live data? Eg transmission temperature so the PID can be imported into other gauges. Love your work, you have enhanced my mechanical knowledge ten fold 🙏
Not that I know of. I believe there are other models that may have that. I do really like wireless especially when doing things at back of the vehicle.
@@SchrodingersBox Thanks, I really don't need because I have a few Scan tools, But I have a key programmer from Xtool and it's great, and after seeing that price I'm really tempted!😄
@@advancedleveldiagnostics There's a coupon for $115 off of one of the Amazon listings putting the price about $350. The D8 is $560 after choosing the listing with $140 coupon. No rebate process necessary.
I have a D7 and D8. (Recently received). I find that neither does much with my early Dodge minivans (up to 2006). Either Dodge has locked all the functionality or XToool is geared more toward foreign vehicles. Really disappointed because I had high expectations. With these vehicles it's little more than an OBD2 scanner.
Just watched another video about the d7. ABS light was on but showed no codes in the module according to this scanner. It DID show no activity on the right front wheel sensor in live data though. Switched to a different scanner and it DID SHOW the appropriate code for it. ????? Thoughts?
Yes I deal with this alllllllll the time and many of my videos show as much. It’s a communication thing where different scan tools seem to give different data. It’s just something I live with as a DIY with lower end scanners
Thanks for the review. I'm hunting for a scan tool which will not break the bank. D7 seems tobe a feasible option. Can it do a transmission re-learn, required for the Subaru CVT's for example?
@@SchrodingersBox thanks for the reply. The functionality is just named in a strange way (or may be google translated from Chinese). As far as I understand it should be "Gearbox Match" in the special functions, according to the manual. Downloaded compatibility list for the Subaru vehicles and according to it, D7 should be able to perform "Clear AT learning value" which is denoted under the transmission module functions, but ATlearning mode (if it is the same as Gearbox match) is under Engine functions. It's kind of confusing.
looks like a gamechanger..as far as value of pricepoint., . 2nd vid ive seen that is enticing. have u used the thinktool pro,. if so how does it compare? thanks
Great review. Can this scanner clear history codes as well as active codes. I have a Silverado that is displaying Steering Assist Reduced that seems to be stuck as a history code and I cannot get rid of it. Also can you adjust steering angle with it? Thanks.
Yes on the steering angle IF the car permits it. Keep in mind some do not like on most GM- you cannot override steering angle. If it’s off then the sensor is bad or misaligned. Yes on the history codes. I find them cleared when I clean sweep the PCM.
hello Matt.keep up the amazing videos .always love watching them.have you by any chance used the D9pro?and if so ,what is your feed back on them please??????

Awesome review. Wondering though if bidirectional functions are possible on all obd2 cars or only a certain level/model year of cars. For instance I have a 2007 bmw, will bi direct work on that unit? Thanks!
Yeah good question. So on ANY scantool- whether an entry level like this or a $30000 snap on Zeus, the bidirectional functions are dictated by the car itself as well as the scantool. You will find on some cars you can control just about every single thing on the vehicle. On other cars you may find you have no bidirectional controls. Again- it’s not so much the scantool as the vehicle. Also remember to have bidirectional control, there has to be computer control of the circuit. So in other words if your horn circuit is simply a relay that powers 12V to the horns- you can’t control that- any more than you could have the tool roll up a manual window. But if the horn is through the BCM, then most likely you can control it but again not all cars may allow that and not all scantools may allow it.
Even if the car has bidirectional control there is no guarantee every bidirectional tool has implemented it for that particular model. Some tools will be perfect on GM but have poor coverage on European or Asian cars. The only way to know is if the manufacturer has a model list or actually look in the menus under that model.
Hey, I came across your diagnosing video from years ago with just a text light in hopes to bring me up to speed with my “crank, no start” issue on a 2006 Lexus GS 300. What makes this diagnosing process difficult for me is that these motors were direct injected and had problems; especially the 2006, with it being the last of the 3.0L flagship for Lexus. I’ve been up to my neck with trying to chase the issue. If you are willing to help or share some of your knowledge I can give you the run down of what I have done so far and where I’m at, as far as diagnosing/ repairing / replacing goes. Thank you in advance for your time.
I have a direct injection video on my website at www.schrodingersboxQM.com. Actually two of them- a overview of DI and also a case study on a vehicle with DI.
Thanks for this video. I did a lot of research on buying a bi directional scan tool. Up until this point all I ever had was a basic code reader that only showed some live data from the ECU, and did basic functions like clear check engine light codes. As my diagnostic ability has grown over the years, I was in a really tough spot to take certain things to a shop to have things done I know could have been done myself with the right scan tool. After doing months of research across different tool manufacturers I ultimately decided to go with XTool. At first I was skeptical, most people who use bi directional scan tools are usually using Autel, or Launch. Top Don was another one shops seem to be using as well. Obviously getting a scan tool from Snap On was out of the scope of my budget. XTool seems to be the best value for the money. I seriously considered the XTool D7. I ultimately decided to go with the XTool A30M. Things that drove my decision was tool functionality. The A30M is cheaper, the software if used on a Android tablet or phone looks, and functions the same as the D7 minus a few special functions that in my mind 99% of Di-yrs will never use. The best part about the A30M is lifetime free updates. This is one of the biggest draw backs when trying to find a bi directional scan tool. Paying money to keep the tool updated for a DIY person does make a whole lot of sense. I know the argument is not updating, but I have herd, and seen some tool manufacturers that will limit functionality of the tool if the updates are not done. There is a lot of companies out there making scan tools these days, and it is difficult to figure out what tool will be appropriate for a advanced DIY'r. I can say that XTool is a solid choice across the board. They have excellent customer service, and they offer a whole line up of tools that can fit any need even for professional shops. The D7 is no exception.
Just watched your video. Don't know if the price is. Correct the link says $614. Let me know if this is correct. Thanks, and great tutorial on this tool. I got to have it😂
@@thewelder9492 I found a video that reset fuel comp so I ordered it. reset mine. put gas in and drove and it reset to 20 percent.fuel trims were +10 at 3 percent so I changed the map sensor. fuel trims went to 0 to + or -2 percent. So its fixed now and I have a bidirectional scanner. I'm amazed at all the features.
I have never used it on such a vehicle. My bet is if the vehicle has an OBD2 Diagnostics port the device will work just like any other OBD2 compliant scantool does.

@@SchrodingersBox thanks a lot. Worth buying. I wonder how it performs on benz and BMW. Some scanners can perform module programming from the tablet. The Autel maxysis elite 2 I had could do that & lost it (got stolen) during an international flight. Im shopping for a cheaper replacement to soothe my pain.
sorry to hear about your maxisys. I will tell you when it comes to Europeans, NONE of my scantools seem to really be satisfactory- I have not tried the XTOOL yet though. Currently when I do european cars I usually use my CRP a touch Pro from Launch for the best communication but it is not bidirectional.
With all these mid price bidirectional scan tools never seen one that will enable you to enter a new code when replacing a faulty tdi fuel injector. Is this tool fully capable of coding a new tdi fuel injector into the ECU. For 2009 VW GOLF TDI as an example ? Or is it just like all the others lacking in this type of practical support?
@@SchrodingersBox Unfortunately when one of your fuel injectors goes bad open circuit etc. Then you need to replace it, each fuel injector has a code which the engine ECU needs to function it correctly. So when replacing a fuel injector you need to enter the new fuel injector code into the engine ECU. This new code is usually marked on the top of the fuel injector, it will be different to your old one.
2 months later it's $460. Not available in UK. Available in France at the equivalent of $1,964. If I were to order it from the US postage is $120, totalling $580. I'll read the reviews; I'll bet there are bad one, at least 10% 1 🌟and 2 🌟🌟. Before this review appeared I'd been searching 'OBD readers with fewest (%) bad reviews '. Whatever scanner I look at there are a lot of bad reviews so an average of 4.5 🌟 means zilch. Thank you for the review, it's been depressing.
Yes I can underastand that. Do keep in mind a lot of times the bad reviews are from people who don't know how to use a scantool- they expect it to just tell you what's wrong, they don't understand what it actually does. All I can say is I use it almost every weekend and I find it to be a great value.
Neither Amazon UK nor US could post to France as it is a "non digital item". Told a woman at XTools, with screenshots of the problem. She replied promptly but continued to ignore the pro lem two or three times!. It arrived today 3 days after ordering from Aliexpress for 365.40€ no extra cost/fees. Feasting out on watching all vids before I pluck up the courage to plug it in.
I tap on System Selection and there's nothing there. On Automatic it just goes back to the blue screen. This is after I updated this morning-- saw an update for Corsa C 2005 (my car, what a coincidence), and got an email saying they'd made this 'improvement' for me, since I had reported that it didn't recognise my VIN, and when I manually inputted it was told I had an Astra. I wanted to check spark, not easy when the plugs/ coils are in one piece on the rail. Well one plug fired (removed and upturned the coil rail with plugs replugged in. But it said my engine, Ecotec Z14XEP, only had 3 cylinders. So I don't know if two other coils are not working because there is a fault or because this thing is crap. So there has been an improvement in that it scanned and correctly identified my VIN and car model, year. But now it won't DO anything. Ecotec owners, Corsa owners, take heed.
Another observation is that I removed the fuel pump relay so as not to have petrol coming out when I activated the coils, but I can hear the pump switch on when I turn the key but didn't notice fuel coming out of the spark plug holes. I wonder if that's normal.
I had high hopes for this. I was deeply saddened to find out that it can't even reset the oil change light on my 3rd gen prius. It tells you instructions on how to reset the light, which doesn't require the scan tool. They are instructions available for free in many different places. On that front it falls totally flat.
Yes keep in mind that this true for ANY scan tool on many vehicles. Some vehicles can not be reset through the scan tool- it must be done manually regardless of the scanner you have.
Matt, I will be a fan of your channel for life....Please continue doing what you do, exactly the way you do it !
Thanks! Will do!
Great to hear!
But I keep itching to get a bidirectional unit for my newer cars.
want to sell your brick? I want it for the oscilliscope.
Thanks
Thank you!! I still use it all the time as it’s what I just keep in my car when I do mobile diags. It’s a great scantool!!
Good choice!!! I use it all the time.
I own an Xtool D7 and D8 they are both very capable bi directional scan tools. Amazing how low the price is for the technology. Nice review Matt!
what does the d8 have that the d7 doesn't?
@polymetric for starters the D8 I own has a Bluetooth dongle, which is much more convenient working under the hood and reading data. I find my Autel MS906BT and MS908SP with a J2534 box to be much more intuitive.
@@polymetric2614 D8 does relearns, whereas D7 does not.
sir what will happen if you didnt renew your software license in both of your xtool?
@@zxcdarel The first 3 years are free updates. After that, it would still continue to work as it always did before. It just wouldn't have any new content added.
I own a D8. I keep learning what it can do for me. Thanks.
WOW!!!!! all that for less than $400 with 3 years of free updates. I am going to buy one to keep in my truck with me at all times. Xtool is going to sell a boat load of them. Thanks Matt
Exactly! I have a scantool in each of my vehicles now so I always have one available if I driving around and can help someone out!!
That’s what this whole channel is about! I show how to interpret functions and I am not a mechanic!!
Exactly!! Yes you can pretty much make a career just making extra keys with this thing!!!
I’ve been following this guys channel for a long time. I very rarely post comments but the amount of valuable information he gives is incredible! Thank you for sharing!! Keep these videos coming
Thanks for sharing! I will definitely keep posting!!
Thank you brother, I have learned a lot from your videos!
great to know!! Yes you will definitely learn how to get the most of your scantool on this channel!!
My d7 just arrived a couple days ago and now watching this review sounds like i may bought a good tool...lol... great review btw..thx.
Enjoy it! you made a good decision.
Hey Matt. Greetings from Ontario. I've owned a D7 for a little while now and with every new update, that tool just gets better and better. I've had fantastic customer support with xtool as well. I also have the A30m. It works pretty good for the price too.
Thanks for the info!
do they have a US phone number for support?
@SchrodingersBox thanks for reviewing this product, I've had my eye on it for at least 6 months now. Do you know if the bidirectional testing works on 2024 model vehicles?
@@randy1izationthey have great support, it's built into the scanner plus you can call them anytime
I would contact their tech support. I don’t know if they have the 2024 update yet.
Good to know!
what's topology?
@polymetric2614 it's just a feature that displays all the modules the vehicle has when you do a complete vehicle scan. Kind of a visual aid that displays all the modules and network. It shows the network layout, scan progress, and if there are any modules not communicating or with faults. Nice feature to have but you don't have to have it.
That's cool, but unfortunate that you can't update it. I always had a feeling these scan tools were software limited.
I sure hope subsequent D8 owners have the topology update, otherwise the D7 is looking like better value for money.
Well Matt, you sold me. Just ordered from your link in the description.
Hopefully you make a few bucks from the sale. Well deserved.
you will absolutely enjoy it!!!
Hmmm. did you contact their customer service about that? what did they say?
Cool story bro
Autel too expensive to run.
Or is it usable without yearly payment?
I called it 2 years ago and some people didn't like it:
Cheap full functionality scanners are coming!
A scanner's hardware is run of the mill and off the shelf.
Software is the only thing that matters and it's not hard to reverse engineer what others already did.
Think I remember you calling that
When are you going to do a review of the updated xtool d7s.
I also like that I don't have to sit in the car to actuate stuff, especially if the interior is real nasty 😂
I've plugged it into quite a few vehicles.
You did a much better review than I did lol!!!!
@@SchrodingersBox thanks, I forgot to ask how you got your scanner to hook up to your computer? Did you need to download something? I could see this being fun to play a joke on the old man 😏
One thing I do find somewhat concerning these days is how hacker's could attack the scan tools themselves and get them too shut down vehicles, or do other "strange stuff" with this type of connectivity 🤔
Couldn't agree more! and I expected the questions on compatibility - that’s what the Amazon link is for lol. I already have it in my copy buffer lol
When your free updates are over if the tool doesn't get fresh updates within 30 days it won't work anymore, so i don't know how that's gonna work out . My d7 will work for 30 days without updating it then it says must install latest updates to continue
@@johnmitchell2741I've not gotten to that point now have I heard of that, but I will find out pretty soon I guess.
What do you have to pay for ?
@@johnmitchell2741so it must be updated
@@SchrodingersBox Great...Thanks!
Great review from a very trustworthy source, I'm going to buy either the A30m or D7.
Thanks for the continued great videos. 🙏
Thanks for watching!
the xtool a30m is a blue tooth dongle version of the d7 (it might be missing a few special functions and remote control im not for sure) and cuts cost down too $175 because you have to use your own phone/tablet,the only complaint i have is the live data graphing kinda slow but that might just be my phone being slow, and unable to graph multiple items but its the best bang for the buck still
Glad to see you advertising scanners now...
You are the MAN Matt, thank you again for another great video.
Thank you! More coming soon.
I have 1 of these-works decent, its bat charges when plugged into to vehicle too. only thing is slow to display real time data especially if i scroll down-up.
yes I agree the refresh rate is a little slow. I always try to narrow down to only relevant PIDs to speed it up. good summary!!
I want one! I could play with that for weeks.
The remote thing yeah mine doesn't have that, but the remote thing it would need to be connected to a phone for the remote to function.
i also got the a30m, best bang for the buck
Great Video as always! I just ordered one. I've been wanting to update my scan tool for a while now.
Very good choice. If your previous one was not bidirectional you will have a whole new world open to you now!!
My xtool d8 is coming in today... Excited..oh its bt as well...
Good choice- better than the model I have!! I believe the D8 might also do key programming
@@SchrodingersBox it does do key programming and it has topology mapping as well..
I've enjoyed your channel for a number of years. But just a DIY'er. I've run into the need to retract parking brakes on a brake job. Will this do that? Thank you for for your clear and very concise instruction.
YES!!!! Not only will it do it but I have a video showing the procedure on the Autel website.
OK. I'll check it out. Thanks for the reply.
I have the D8 ... It's a pretty great tool; but it was $700. It's particularly good a making IMMO keys and pulling codes for keys; I'm not sure if the D7 is as capable or not on keys. They also have one called A30M, and it's basically the same software (mostly), but it uses your phone instead of a tablet, and it's under $200.
haven’t tried it on keys yet.
Done keys on my camry and 2018 ram with the d7 but on the ram I needed 12+8 cable with star connector, so yes d7 can do keys but does not have the option of adding kc100, kc501 and ks-1
@@only1hollywoodjacko right on.
Let's see you do a video on this computer on a Chrysler product 2018 and newer with a security gateway module !
Very interesting. I am curious about the EEPROM functions and if the tool allows you to dump the memory of controllers, to save it and then restore it to a new module (like Forscan does for Ford), or even allow you to change memory. Thank you for the review.
Good question! I am not sure if this model can do that but I’ll give it a try!!
The D8 is supposed to be EEprom capable, but I'm not sure about the D7.

Hmmm weird it didn’t work on your Honda because I recently used mine on a Honda with no issues. it easily gave over 60 PIDs.

Thanks again Matt for a great video. I purchased the D7 on Black Friday. I’ve been watching your channel a long time. It would be nice to see more diagnostics using this tool. Thanks
I will definitely use it in the next several videos and hopefully show more features.
No I use it all the time and it has only ever given me a communication issue on a 2017 Nissan. Otherwise it’s been perfect.

@@SchrodingersBox thank you for the reply.
Thanks for the review. I'm hunting for a scan tool which will not break the bank. D7 seems tobe a feasible option. Can it do a transmission re-learn, required for the Subaru CVT's for example?
I am not sure specifically on the Subaru but I have done similar relearns on other models with CVT’s.
2nd vid ive seen that is enticing. have u used the thinktool pro,. if so how does it compare? thanks
Sorry never used the thinktool so I can't make comparison.
No this is my only experience with XTOOL ever. But hopefully not the last!!
@@SchrodingersBox indeed big guy

Great Video. Im on the fence if I want to buy this one or pay a few hundred extra for the Autel MK808TS
Good choice either way based on what I am seeing in comments. I dont have either so I cannot make recommendation.

I believe it would only be like $400 to update your autoenginuity, no?

Will this scan tool provide system headlight malfunction codes in a 2020 Toyota Camry? I believe these codes are Toyota specific warning ⚠️ codes
Your a good teacher
thank you!!
Wow, I'm going to have to buy one of those damn things!
Made my purchase thank you
Great decision!!! I use mine EVERY weekend!!
Thanks man,...You rock!
Nice recon ! Thanks !!
Thank you for the review
It is a good deal
It really is!
What special functions will work on Ford 1915?
I’m very interested sir. Can it do EPS calibration on a Hyundai?
The D7 is no exception.
great overview, thanks!!
I just ordered that for the same reasons, looking forward to delivery day!
I just brought one yesterday. Can't wait 😂
Matt, can this tool help me program a used computer for my 2014 Expedition? Thanks!
As of now, price is $459. I'm sure it's still a great value, but very interesting in the timely hike in price, (or untimely, as it were).
250-300 bucks in aliexpress
Just watched your video. Don't know if the price is. Correct the link says $614. Let me know if this is correct. Thanks, and great tutorial on this tool. I got to have it😂
Aliexpress D7 250-300$
Will the D7 reset fuel composition on a 2012 chevy silverado? I do not run ethanol and it is showing Alcohol content at 72% percent on my truck.
Yes it will. I just purchased one and I reset the fuel composition on my 2013 suburban.
Any applications on medium and heavy duty international trucks?
I have never used it on such a vehicle. My bet is if the vehicle has an OBD2 Diagnostics port the device will work just like any other OBD2 compliant scantool does.
u channel amazing
interesting
gooood language ( clearly)
professional
Glad you think so!
Will the Xtool D7 work for 2017-2020 dodge charger
I got the D7. I really like it but I'll tell you one that it won't read, 99 Nissan Altima.😅
Hmmmm so I actually had a Nissan last weekend and it wouldn’t read either!! only car that wouldn’t read so far.
@@SchrodingersBox Hi. I also have the D7 and seems that it doenst read my Nissan Cube. this nissan is japanese import and it doenst have normal 17 number vin number. i think it only has frame number. not sure is it possible to generate the vin somehow and enter it manually to the D7 tester.
Are you able to graph live data with the d7? Like fuel trims and o2 sensors for example
Yes absolutely you are. it’s not exactly the best resolution but you can indeed graph and in fact overly graphs
That's EXACTLY why I keep my $6 android app Torque Pro with bluetooth connection to a generic OBD reader. graphing fuel trims and O2 sensors.
@@jum5238 me too. torque pro in the car when i travel without the xtool.

This was one of the most amazing devices I have ever used. it absolutely worked. I have wanted a thermal camera but always thought I would have to spend $1000 for something that would work for diagnostics. this thing worked amazingly well at a third that cost.
its under $400 on amazon. and its red. alright ill buy it
I am having difficulties with Ford powetstroke and Chevy duramax, Customer support has not gotten back it's been 3 Days! They don't answer phone calls, can anyone suggest or some insight if it does the midsized pickups diesal? Any help thanks!
Hello Matt. Awesome video. Does it require a subscription to keep getting updates? If so how much is it set at?
$99 a year after 3 years
Yes south park is right. If you don’t pay the subscription fee then you cannot add new updates and model years but the tool is still functional.
@@only1hollywoodjacko awesome deal
sorry to hear about your maxisys. I will tell you when it comes to Europeans, NONE of my scantools seem to really be satisfactory- I have not tried the XTOOL yet though.
Currently when I do european cars I usually use my CRP a touch Pro from Launch for the best communication but it is not bidirectional.
Love my d8
With all these mid price bidirectional scan tools never seen one that will enable you to enter a new code when replacing a faulty tdi fuel injector.
Is this tool fully capable of coding a new tdi fuel injector into the ECU. For 2009 VW GOLF TDI as an example ?
Or is it just like all the others lacking in this type of practical support?
Why would you recode a fuel injector?
@@SchrodingersBox Unfortunately when one of your fuel injectors goes bad open circuit etc.
Then you need to replace it, each fuel injector has a code which the engine ECU
needs to function it correctly.
@@SchrodingersBox Update: I lied! It IS available in UK for £450. 100 or so reviews. Have emailed the sellers with my VIN etc so may buy. Thank you.
Can a TCCM relearn be done with a xtool d7
I had high hopes for this. I was deeply saddened to find out that it can't even reset the oil change light on my 3rd gen prius.
It tells you instructions on how to reset the light, which doesn't require the scan tool. They are instructions available for free in many different places. On that front it falls totally flat.
Yes keep in mind that this true for ANY scan tool on many vehicles. Some vehicles can not be reset through the scan tool- it must be done manually regardless of the scanner you have.
I am looking for the Kingbolen K7, What's the difference between the Xtool D7 and the Kingbolen K7 ?
I believe someone else answered this in the comments below a while back but I don't remember the answer sorry! Maybe scan the comments.
Thanks matt
Can this be used to clone a 2013 Subaru ECU replacement including VIN number?
I don’t know about subaru programming specifically but it absolutely has ECU programming functions
did you pay for this tool or did you get the scanner free?
