    In this video we look at the all new XTOOL D7S OBDII bidirectional scan tool. The original D7 is an excellent diagnostic scan tool already but they made it even better with this new D7S. Things like a larger battery, a rear camera with flash, collapsible kickstand, more storage, etc.... along with the new graphical user interface (the part the user sees and interacts with) gives the new D7S a whole new look and feel. The D7 has always been highly regarded in the scan tool world for having full bidirectional software that is full of features and functions for a very affordable price. It's hard to find any other scan tool that has more features and functions for a lower price. The D7 has been in the "sweet spot" of scan tools for several years at this point already, and now the new D7S moves into the "sweet spot".
    NOTICE: I will be making a short followup video for this D7S within the next few days. I notice some of the shots are pretty much blown out by the display backlight which makes some detail on the screen very hard to see.... Basically, it will be a short, part #2 video that will only show the parts that were hard to see in this video. Stay tuned. Sorry for the inconvenience.
    Thanks for watching

    I like what you said in the 13 min mark. Finding the options within the module. I just ordered this for DIY and really look forward to fixing a few car issues, such as failed ABS and ABS bleeding. Hard to believe how advanced cars are these days and my ten year old cars are needing diags beyond simple codes. I also am dealing with a 98 GM passlock completely shut the vehicle down, hoping this D7S in your video will help there. Thank you for a clear informative video and taking the time to share with us. I got the D8 recently. Other than the small annoyances like you mentioned, I love it. I didnt need to spend thousands on a Snap-On or equivalent. And the customer service seems to be great with Xtool. They respond very quick. They actually sent me an Endoscope, Screen Protector and Extension Cable for free. I was happy with that. The new D7W that is coming out right now is a wireless version of the D7S. It uses Wifi instead of bluetooth. Wifi is a MUCH better wireless technology. The only other scan tools on the open market that use Wifi for the wireless connection between the vehicle and the scan tool start around $2500-$3000. The new D7W will change the scan tool industry. All other manufactures will now be designing scan tools to use a Wifi enabled VCI. I should have the new D7W in my hands by this coming Friday. The video will be out soon after.... Stay tuned for the video.

      Congrats on the purchase of a new scan tool. The scan tool simply supplies data to the human.... it's still up to the human to decipher that data and determine what the problem is. The help menu that you are wondering about is just simply "google." If you get stumped on a certain acronym (for example) just type it into google and you should quickly find out what it means. Post back here if you have any questions that I may be able to help you with once you receive the new tool. Thanks for the compliment.

We now live in a throw away world, if it breaks, they expect you to throw it away and buy a new one. And that's not specifically one scan tool manufacturer, that's the entire scan tool industry. Unfortunately.

      Honestly, if you're thinking about a D7 right now, I'd recommend buying the new D7W that is coming out right now. I will have one in a few days. This will be the first scan tool under $2500 bucks (at least) to use a WiFi connection between the vehicle and the scan tool. All other scan tools under the $2500-$3000 level use Bluetooth. Unless you're as big tech nerd, you may not know the difference between Bluetooth and WiFi..... Wifi transfers data light years faster than BT, Wifi can maintain a connection over a much greater distance (compared to BT), Wifi will allow almost unlimited connections (not really a factor when used for scan tool to vehicle connection), and the connection is much more stable and less likely to disconnect. This new WiFi VCI doesn't really make the scan tool any better than the standard D7S, but it SHOULD make the overall user experience much better. My new D7W video will be out shortly after the tool arrives here at my place, which should be soon, it was shipped yesterday or today. Be sure you're subbed and stay tuned so you don't miss that video. Thanks!

    From what I can see, all scantool companies fight very hard to NOT offer bidirectional scantools with lifetime free updates. They just keep releasing the exact same product again and again, with just a different name or logo. This is getting ridiculous.

    • @SlipFitGarage

      As a fellow consumer, I agree. There are very few differences between newer and older import scan tools. They keep advertisements and marketing material vague so you never really know exactly what's new, or what isn't. On the other hand, I can't blame them for charging for updates. A company doesn't stay in business very long when it gives away it's product for free. I see it both ways....

    Hi. Thanks for this. I am a DIYer and looking to get a scan tool and the XTOOL is a definite consideration. The Car Care Nut channel first introduced me to XTOOL's D7. Have you had a chance to compare the D7S to the D8 and D9?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  7 месяцев назад +3

      Hi. Yes, I've used them all. They are all very similar. There are some extra software features as you go up in through the different models, but keep in mind a lot of the differences are physical. As you go up in model, you also go up is battery size, screen size, faster processor, (sometimes) more storage, (sometimes) etc, etc. The D7 family of tools are full bidirectional with re-learns and resets, etc. Larger bigger scan tools are also full bidirectional with relearns and resets, too. That right there is what you need to fix 98% of problems on 98% of cars. If I'm not mistaken, the D8 has a bit better live graphing, and the D9 has better graphing, topology map, along with SOME (very limited) programing and coding depending on make/model. And most of the special make/models are foreign cars that I never see. And just to be 100% clear... EVERYTHING that I just typed is 100% vehicle dependent. Thanks for the question.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  8 месяцев назад +1

      In my experience, what you're asking about is vehicle make/model specific. Some vehicles allow a scan tool to "replace" a module with a new or used one. This is actually a function of the computer in the vehicle that is allowing a scan tool to use this feature. So, therefore, just because you might be able to replace a module on one make/model with a scan tool does not mean you can replace every module on every vehicle. Generally, most guys program new modules (again, depending on make/model) with a laptop computer and a J2534 pass-though device. I wish I had a better answer for you. Thanks for the question.

    Question about updates: when do the update periods begin? When the scan tools are released or when you register them? Considering the otofix d1 lite and the xtool d7s.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  8 месяцев назад +1

      Scan tool manufactures are constantly sending out updates. Not just once per year when new car models come out. Updates come out probably once per week.... sometimes more, sometimes less. It's not only new model updates, it's also software and firmware updates that continually make the tools better. They also include bug and glitch fixes that other users have discovered. The free update period begins on the day YOU register your new scan tool. Typically, brand new scan tools need to be registered with the manufacturer when they're first powered up before they can be use. It's easy. You simply follow the prompts on the screen and and a minute or two later you're registered. Sometime a new scan tool will allow you to "try" the tool a few times before registration is finally required. (depending on scan tool manufacturer) Thanks for the question.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  7 месяцев назад +1

      This scanner will display whatever live data the computer is monitoring. So, if those data PIDs exist on the year/make/model that you're currently plugged into, then yes, this scan tool will display that info. There isn't a scan tool on earth that can display info that doesn't already exist in the vehicle's ECM to begin with. For an easy example.... if there is not trans temp sensor installed on a vehicle, then the scan tool cannot display trans temp. I hope that make sense. Thanks!

    Just learning about bidirectional scan tools. So this item includes a three year subscription. If the subscription expires and the owner does not renew it, is the scan tool now a brick or does it only work on older model cars? I understand that for some cars, perhaps all, the tool needs to communicate via the internet to the car manufacturer. If the subscription expires, will it still do this or does it kill the internet connection too.
    I'm a hobbyist, if I buy a unit, I will not have a cost recovery plan, so I need advise.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Jim,
      Once the 3 year subscription runs out, the scan tool still continues to operate at that current software level for the life of the scan tool, or until the device finally breaks beyond repair. You do need a current subscription to communicate with "the cloud" when working on newer cars that require a connection to the cloud. This is a requirement of the vehicle, NOT the scan tool. But the good news is.... this "cloud connection" requirement is a fairly new thing. Like probably within the last 3 years, or so. Not all new vehicles are this way but I suspect they all will be eventually. But the good news is, this tool will work at 100% capacity on vehicles that do NOT need the cloud. (which is still probably 99% of the vehicles on the road today) For example, my 2006 GMC 1500 pick-up truck doesn't require ANY of that. The stand-alone scan tool by itself is all that truck needs, and that is the way MOST of the vehicles are today. They don't even need an internet connection at all. In fact, I normally use my scan tools with the WiFi turned off. Only the really new vehicles are the ones that get complicated. Anything from 2020 (roughly) and older requires nothing but the tool itself. I should mention.... The newer 2018+ FCA (Fiat Chrysler) vehicles do require a additional 12+8 cable to communicate with the vehicle OR an AutoAuth account but currently most scan tools are not compatible with AutoAuth. If you plan to work on 2018 and newer FCA vehicle, you will need a 12+8 cable for an additional 20-30 bucks. But, no cloud connection is required so that is nice. When the subscription ends, it does NOT kill your internet capabilities. Your scan tool tablet can still access the internet for using web browsers, etc.... as long as you have a wifi network available in your house/garage/shop. And just to be really clear..... NON of this affects the WiFi connection between the vehicle VCI (vehicle connection interface) and the scan tool itself. This new D7W or even the new D8W with WiFi VCI (instead of a Bluetooth connection) is the way of the future. It makes for a rock steady connection between the vehicle and the scant tool. My new D8W video will be out within the next week or so on youtube. It's basically the same as the D7W but with a larger screen, larger battery, and possible a bit better live graphing and possibly topology mapping. I'm not 100% certain on those last few features because I haven't use that tool yet. I have it here next to me, but I haven't used t yet. I will soon. Hopefully this info helps to answer your questions. Thanks.

    Considering Bi-directional scan tools and leaning towards xtool. Right now I need one that can test and reset the TCU and troubleshoot automatic transmissions and components. Looking at a Chevy 4L60E currently. Can this or other xtool models do this. No one has mentioned this feature that I have found. Thank you.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  3 месяца назад +1

      This is a FULL bidirectional scan tool. It can access all modules in any given vehicle, including the transmission. It will give you whatever bidirectional control the vehicle manufacturer has programmed into that vehicle. Meaning..... not all vehicles have the same bidirectional abilities because different vehicle manufacturers program their vehicles differently from one another. It's not the scan tool that controls bidirectional functions.... it's the computer in the vehicle that controls these function, the scan tool is just simply sending the command. So, with all that said, I'm not sure what you're looking to do inside the transmission control module of a Chevy with a 4L60E, but whatever functions GM has programmed into that vehicle's computer, you will be able to control them with this scan tool. However, when you plug into a Ford truck (for example) do not expect to see the same exact menu of bidirectional functions that you see when plugged into a GM. Sure, many functions may be similar but it will not be the same. (different vehicle manufacturer, different menus, different options, different functions, different wording, etc...) Also, you can try the "function list" on the XTOOL website. It allows you to look at a specific scan tool model and then check specific vehicle coverage. The "Function List" can be found here: www.xtooltech.com/english/FunctionQuery.html
      Thanks for the question.

      They are both excellent scan tools and they both have basically the same functionality. The OTOFIX D1 Lite is wireless and the D7S is corded.... if that makes a difference to you? @@dandsrc9897 The only other thing I can think of is Auto Auth for 2018 and newer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). If you plan to work on a lot of 2018 or newer Chrysler vehicles then you'll either need an Auto Auth account, or a 12+8 cable to bypass the secure gateway module. Right now the D1 has the ability to register with an Auto Auth account (if you have one) and the D7S does not. As it stands right now, the 12+8 cable is your only option to use the D7S with newer Chrysler vehicles. However, I suspect that will change fairly soon and then it will become a non-issue. So, i'm in between the Foxwell NT809TS and XTOOL D7S. What would you recommend. Both of them have similar prices

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  8 месяцев назад +4

      Well, I typically do not make straight-up recommendations.... I try to show the differences between scan tool models so the customer can decide for themselves. However, I will say, the NT809TS has full function TPMS capabilities built into the scan tool, and the D7S does not. Typically in the scan tool world, even the most high end scan tools do not include full TPMS capabilities.... most guys usually use a dedicated stand-alone TPMS tool. If you decide that you would like to have TPMS capabilities built into a scan tool, the NT809TS is one of those models So, if you are specifically looking to do a bunch of TPMS work, the NT809TS would serve you better. Also, the NT809TS is a cordless tool and the D7S is not.... meaning the connection between the vehicle and the scan tool is either wireless, or wired. So, do you want TPMS capabilities? Do you want a wireless connection? Those two questions may help you decided which tool to buy. I do believe there is a new wireless D7W (wireless) version coming out soon but I don't know when. I thought it was going to be out several months ago and it's not yet. Although I have seen pictures of it. lol. And lastly.... I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure XTOOL is a MUCH bigger seller than the other brand that you're asking about. I hope this helps you to make a decision. Thanks for the question.

    What about this cloud business you mentioned several times . . . I never heard anyone mention that ever about any vehicle. is that something you have to set up separately ? how can you tell if a particular vehicle needs a cloud ?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  7 месяцев назад

      It's for newer cars. It's something the car manufacturers have started doing. There is nothing for you to setup. However, you do need a scan tool that is connected to the internet, AND the scan tool must also have a current subscription... And by "subscription" I mean it's the same subscription that allows your scan tool to receive "updates" from the tool manufacturer. So, in other words, if your XTOOl scan tool can receive updates from XTOOL, then your scan tool will be able to connect with "the cloud" for (most) bidirectional functions on SOME newer cars. And just to be clear, it's the vehicle that is requiring this nonsense, NOT the scan tool. My 2022 KIA requires a cloud connection regardless of the brand of scan tool that I connect to the vehicle. On the flip side..... If you're working on a vehicle that does NOT require a cloud connection, then nothing I mentioned above will apply.

    Do you know if the D7s has ecu configuration now like the D8?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  8 месяцев назад

      Probably. Most of that is vehicle dependent. What works on one make/model may not work on a different make/model. You can try the search feature (link below) on the XTOOL website. You can look up features and functions that are specific to the D7S (or any other XTOOL scan tool) for your year/make/model of vehicle. It's not perfect but it's worth a try.
      Check it out here: www.xtooltech.com/english/FunctionQuery.html
      Thanks for the question.

      Thanks for the response! I have checked on there with no clear answer I’m mainly looking to see if the D7s can disable the seat belt buzzer and roll down all windows with fob on Toyotas. I have seen videos of the D8 doing this but not the D7 or D7s I thought maybe the new software made it capable!

    Does this scanner only connect to internet through Wi-Fi ? Is Bluetooth an option to get it online cause say you break down and don’t have Wi-Fi would it still function?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  2 месяца назад

      Well, it's an Android based tablet. Does Android allow internet connection via Bluetooth? I don't know, I've never tried. However, in your example, it really wouldn't matter because the tablet (scan tool) does NOT need an internet connection ON MOST VEHICLES to work properly. Typically, the tablet only needs an internet connection to receive software updates. The scan tool will function as an OBDII scanner with no network connection at all. The only exception is.... on some of the newest vehicles (like the K5 in this video) the vehicle can require the scan tool to have internet access so it can access the vehicle manufacturers "cloud" for some functions to work properly. You can still usually get trouble codes on those vehicles, but certain bidirectional functions need the "cloud" to work properly. So, if you break down in the middle of nowhere, and you have zero internet access, YES, the scan tool will still work fine on MOST vehicles that are on the road today. Some NEW vehicles require the internet, but again, that is a vehicle requirement, not a scan tool requirement. So, in other words, if your vehicle requires the scan tool to be connected to the internet, that would be true with ANY brand of scan tool, not just XTOOL. It's a VEHICLE requirement. Keep in mind most modern smartphones now include "hot spot" capabilities so you can share your phone's internet connection with another device.... so you always have that option, if need be. But honestly, if you break down in the middle of nowhere, in a new enough car that it requires the scan tool to have internet connection, then my guess is, that vehicle is still under warranty and it would be going to the dealer for repairs, anyway. Not to mention, if you're in an area with no internet, then you probably wouldn't have the tools, equipment, or parts to repair the car, either... And lastly, the requirements to operate this scan tool are no different than the requirements to operate any other scan tool make/model. So, in other words, you'd be in the same boat (situation) regardless of which scan tool you decide to purchase. Thanks for the question.

    Hi, i can get the d7s for more 30€ than the d7, do you think it's worth it ? I know the d7 got a big update and its even better but did they include the d7s ? Meaning do they have the same exact updates and functions ? Xtool didnt answer in a week so I'm asking in case you know.

      Yes, anything the original D7 received in that major update a few years ago is also on all the new D7 models. The D7S, and the wifi wireless D7W are awesome tools!

    Bought this to use on my Kia K5 but it only works on 2022 and 2021. The xtool update page says the last update was 7/23. Lack of updates is not looking good. Most of the special functions are not supported. A basic OBD2 tool should do the job for $100 and no update fees after 3 yrs.

      When I bought my 2022 K5 brand new in 2021, none of the scan tool manufacturers supported that model until late 22 or early 23.... I don't remember the exact date. But it was over a year before ANY scan tool worked my my K5. My Launch, Autel and Xtool scan tools were all the same. None of them supported my new car for well over a year after I bought it. It really wasn't a big deal to me because my K5 is still under warranty and I don't need to be performing my own work, anyway. It doesn't seem ANY scan tool manufacturers are in a hurry to support the newest vehicles on the road. The dealers have their own dealer level scan tools that work on the new cars and they're all under warranty. You can be disappointed that your new car isn't supported, I don't blame you, but it's not just an Xtool "thing". At least not in my experience, anyway. You can look back at my previous videos and you'll see that I own MANY new scan tools, none of them worked on my K5 for over a year after I bought my car. It's just how the industry is, I guess...

    I bought the same kind scanner I use it five times and then all of a sudden Jam doesn't want to do nothing keep telling me check your connection and I check everything and everything good I called the company and I tell him what's going on they tell me defective scanner I have to send it back

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  4 месяца назад

      Well, unfortunately, receiving a defective device can and does happen in these modern times. Not every individual resistor, capacitor, transistor, etc. etc.... is 100% perfect. Defective electronic parts get installed into mass produced devices every day. They work long enough to pass inspection and fail shortly after the product starts to be used by the end customer. I guarantee Xtool did not knowingly sell you a defective scan tool. I know it sucks to go through the hassle but if they're telling you to send it back, then it needs to be sent back. They'll probably ship you a replacement scan tool right away. Ask them for a paid return shipping label so you don;t have to pay for return shipping. Sorry for your troubles.

      Yeah, not sure why there are doing it that way. Ask Amazon if they can just refund the money back to your amazon account, instead of back to the original funding source... That way your funds should be available right away to turn around and re-buy the new scan tool.

Sorry for your experience but unless you buy a Snap-on, or Matco scan tool, all the rest are made by Chinese companies, including Topdon ( I have two of those) If you don't like your Xtool scan tool, simply send it back to Amazon for a full refund. Can you explain to me what exactly the Topdon scan tool was capable of doing that your Xtool scan tool was not capable of, when trying to get your new ignition installed?

  • @la40-1
    @la40-1 7 месяцев назад

    I'm disappointed. It's the worst scan tool I've ever used. First it came with completely empty battery. This was a sign for me that the battery will not hold well and I was right it's holding only 3 days in standby from 100% to 0% Nevertheless, I decided to give it a try and what a disappointment. This peace of shity software sometimes work sometimes not. I've tried it with several vehicles. Autoscan some times find the vehicle sometime not (the same vehicle) and want from me to input manually the VIN number. My vehicles option is not working at all! I need to put the VIN for my own vehicle every time like a creazy! After that sometimes it is very fast and communicate with the ECU very fast seconds later start to be very slow and laggy and loading for minutes. Deleting of the error codes is not working most of the time, just show error message "communication fail" or something else. Sometimes when I scann a vehicle it shows that there is 4000 errors (*_*) I scann it again and it shows 0. Live data is not working most of the time it shows 5000+ data sources which obviously is not true and if you scroll them you see that they repeat itself endless. The live data search function show also a lot of repeting rows. Back button is also not working most of the time you click it and nothing happens and after 30-40 seconds it sart working from itself. I need to restart the whole device several times each time to start working properly. Restart ... test ... restart ... test until it start working property. What a nightmare I can't trust this device at all. Stay away!

      You obviously received a defective unit.... Because if your situation was normal, the internet would be filled with comments like yours, and it's not. My XTOOL products have worked very well on every vehicle that I have plugged them into. You need to return the scan tool ASAP. Sorry for your trouble.
