  • If you have tried everything to fix an igniter error code or the lid light is staying on with your Traeger Timberline 1300 or Timberline XL then you will want to watch this video! Have you tried replacing the igniter and/or motherboard and you still have the igniter error? You may have hidden melted wires near the grease/ash keg underneath the grill. See how to fix this issue or if it hasn't happened yet, see how to fix it so it doesn't happen in the future.

I’m a tech for Westlake Ace. I’ve got a timberline XL now and it isn’t the first one either in my shop. I’ve talked to Traeger three times. I’m sure they are just reading a script on these timberlines and it’s not a good script. I want to thank you for this video. I suspect it will make my job a little easier. The design of these grill is as poor of a design I have ever seen and I’ve been working of one form of machinery for 50+ years. The older Traeger’s are simple machines and easy to work on these are a nightmare to me.

Best video ever! Didn’t see it until after Traeger sent me a new lid sensor and igniter. Failed after all parts were in. The connector by the keg was no more burnt to a crisp. Pull the wires all the way through and tied them off. It still didn’t work but I put the old igniter back in now it’s working like a champ. I wish I would of see this before having my grill down for over a week.

Just had this issue, but my errors were lid sensor and flame sensor. Good news is your video saved me a lot of time and fixed it in about 5 minutes.
Better news: I talked with Traeger about this and they told me they are aware of this issue now, and that it should only affect the units shipped in 2022. They no longer include that wire in the units they ship out now.

It sure is included on new replacement wiring harness. The techs I’ve talked to didn’t know this was a real issue.

Danny, this video saved me!!! I can't thank you enough!! I had a little grease fire in the keg. Got all the wrong parts from traeger, just like you said in the video. I was going to have to buy a new grill (which my wife was definitely not happy about!). I found your video and 10 minutes later my grill is as back to normal! I am in shock! Thanks again!!

It's awesome you're up and running again ironically I'm going out tonight to do that same job on a lady's grill that's had three parts sent to her now lol

Thanks for this! Just got a demo XL, and it was complaining about the flame sensor and pellet sensor being disconnected. After checking everything and running the self-tests multiple times, it turned out to be the exact issue you described! That connector was completely melted. Once I broke apart the wires, the sensor issues went away!

This video helped me out tremendously. Had the same issues with lid open sensor, lights we’re constantly on and it wouldn’t heat up all the way…thinking the hood was open. Also, the ash pot thumb pusher was melted. The exact location of the wire harnesses was melted the exact same way. As a further note, if you cut off the plug, you can easily pull the wire all the way through into the hopper without cutting the zip ties. Thank you very much for the video…would have never know where to start.

Great Video. I had and have the same problem. I went though the trouble shooting with Traeger 4 times since Thanksgiving. They sent us a new, Hot Rod, then a new Lid sensor and then ultimately a new hopper assembly. I installed the new hopper assembly about the time I first saw this video. When disconnecting the original grease harness, I found the melted grease sensor plug. The new assembly is all installed, but it now gives a lid sensor error. Everything in the hopper is brand new from the factory. I have the grease sensor plug zip tied, but the lid sensor persists. Hopefully the grill will self fix, with the next firmware update. It's a great grill when it works.

Be sure the magnet is on the lid... Next check both wires are connected coming off the sensor... Definitely be sure it's updated, they did go through a small window of time giving a false lid error message that has been fixed with an update

So interesting to hear the issues customers have and besides this wire relocation all the units I sold have not had issues

This is great info! Checked for the melted plug but to no avail. It’s throwing error 0010 “igniter not detected”. I’ll be on the hook with Traeger tomorrow to see what the fix is.
I’ll edit this post for what the fix ends up being for some tribe knowledge. It’s starting to look like no smoked brisket for Christmas this year 😔

If it is melted, what do we ask Traeger to send us for a new one? I’m getting a “flame sensor” error in a new Timberline.. they are sending me a new flame sensor / hot rod, and a lid sensor… they also said motherboard but not sure if that’s the case.. waiting on it to actually ship.

For new grill owners of the new timberline XL (also known as gen 2) let me share my frustrations and experiences. My problems were as follows; grill would not pair the with the Bluetooth meat probes or the side burner and the app showed it was always offline; and then it would try and update software and get stuck in a downloading update state. Bottom line up front, it's currently working but took 4 days to 'self-fix' itself. When I first set it up it connected to my network without any problems and then went to a downloading updates screen which locked me out of doing anything else. After a day of nothing happening i turned the power off and rebooted it (push power button to off, unplug, turn button to on and wait 10 seconds, turn button to off, plug back in and turn button back on to power it up). The grill would show a screen and allow me to control functions until I backed out to the main menu at which time it would immediately go back to downloading updates and lock me out again. after allowing this to go on for hours (even overnight) and doing multiple reboots and reading everything I could find I discovered my display firmware was way out of date, but the other firmware was ok. I used their network connection app called 'RouteThis' (discussed at Traeger's support website) which showed I had a good connection w/o problem and then I finally called Traeger support on Sundary (they are open 7 days a week). He was unable to find any problems and escalated the ticket and said someone would get back to me in a couple of days. This morning (Tuesday) I checked the grill and discovered it no longer said updating software! I tried to connect the Bluetooth which previously wouldn't pair and now everything paired easily, and my app now was working and showed the grill was online. However the display firmware still shows it's on an older version so my guess is some other firmware just hadn't finished the install to hand it off back to the grill. I have no idea what changed but it appears this thing can take days to update itself the first time so if you are having similar problems and you have a strong network connection just leave it alone and be patient for 4 days and see if it works out. Also, there was lots of talk about how long it takes to heat up. I found after the pellets were in the chamber and it wasn't setting up for the first burn it would go to my 400 degrees seasoning setting just as fast as my propane grill does. I saw no slow heat up issues at all. My best guess is there was a firmware update that just didn't finish installing and it took a long time to resolve itself. i'm hoping it will see the display firmware still needs updating and do that too now that everything else seems to be working. I've been frustrated for the last couple days and lost faith in this grill, but now it seems to be doing everything I expected it to do and i'm having high hopes again. I share this so you start the process knowing it could take days for the software to update so you too don't get frustrated thinking your grill is broken.

Before the new Timberline go to the customer I link them up to WiFi and upload all current updates so when the customer gets it it's seasoned and up to date... Do to situations similar... It works every time and our customers thankfully have not had an issue like that since I started doing it that way

So nothing is closed connected to the wire connector? What is the point of an open connection?
