3:22 What you say here gives me mixed feelings because this implies the feeling of meaning that it's unlucky for someone to be born black. I personally don't believe it's "unlucky to be born of a certain race," but I think the true big issue isn't a matter of luck, but a matter of corruption of legalizing slavery, even though it's objectively unethical. It's a corruption that result in much blood, sweat, and tears, and this is even more apparent in the American Civil War that resulted in much blood spilled on the battlefield. There's no shame in being of a certain race, or "unluckiness," but I do believe there is much shame to be had in a persistence in being greedily cruel.

This is how I felt after reading 12 Years a Slave. I couldn't think straight for days, it affected me so much. I might give this one a shot and just mentally prepare myself way ahead of time.

***** It wasn't graphic, but it was extremely mind bending. Sometimes I think I over-empathize with characters. I mean, they aren't real. But they're BASED on real events, real scenarios-- these people may not have existed but their STORY did- does. It's a story that isn't nice, but it's a major part of our US history, our human history. Matts BookTalk mentioned the movie 12 Years A Slave-- I know I couldn't watch it... I don't know that I could read it either. It's like Unbroken-- I read it (surprised myself that I was able to) but I will never watch the movie. Let me know if you read this book. I am very glad I did! It was hard to articulate a review, especially as a White Girl. I'm relieved this video is getting nice comments! xoxo

Jo ReadsBooks After reading the book, I can safely say I cannot watch the movie. Knowing that these characters existed at one point in time and actually experienced all of these horrific things makes it so hard to watch without being an emotional wreck. Especially since I learned to care about the people Solomon met throughout his 12 years as a slave :(

***** Yes! That's how I feel about Unbroken. I don't even know if I can make a video about it. My Pap did the exact same thing as the main character/PERSON in Unbroken. I now know exactly how amazing it is that my Pap survived just TRAINING for the AAF. The amount of planes that crashed in training/non-combat circumstances is astounding. And then all the war stuff! All the people in Unbroken are real people that really witnessed these horrific things, experienced inhumane circumstances... I just can't with the FEELS.

I have to get my hands on this book. The themes you've described sounds so intriguing and compelling. I've never read a story about black people owning slaves. However, I did know freed black Americans were kidnapped and sold into slavery. It's in that movie 12 years of Slaves. Great movie. You should check it out; a bit graphic though. Those were some atrocious times for sure. Stimulating review, Joe.

Matts BookTalk Thanks! I hope you get this book & enjoy it! I was worried it'd be too intense/graphic for me to handle. It really wasn't graphic, bad things happened but there weren't gory details. I felt the book exposed themes without doing it in a.... "shocking" way... if that makes sense. It could've been a very angry, explicit book. xo

I love when books do that, put you in the shoes of others. Is that a book journal that you keep to write your thoughts down? What a great idea!

Walkinthe Woods I do too! I always learn something. Yes, I have a book journal and I LOVE it!!! It has little extras inside to fill out and lots of book lists in the back. I did a video on it here... ruclips.net/video/5Fx_uf2s9NA/видео.html

Thank you! I went back and watched the video. Will definitely pick up one for me and one for my daughter. One more thing. I hope it's ok to say. I thought it was funny that this book also made you happy to be white. The crazy thing is that you're happy to be white so you don't have to live under white supremacy institutions. It's not the first time I've heard someone say this. In the 80s American integrated military white guys would often say with pride, "It's a white man's world." Because of that I take voting and participating in local politics very serious. I don't want to be happy to be straight and continue to vote for people who would deny gay people the same rights that I have. Hopefully, while you're happy to be white you're doing everything you can to ensure that nonwhite people are treated fairly. Again, I don't mean this in a bad way. Love your channel and your humor.

Walkinthe Woods It just flusters me that it was pure chance. No one has control over what color they are, I don't understand people that are racist. If people want to be ignorant and narrow-minded- they have that choice. But no one gets to choose the race/culture/economic background they are born into. And I think a lot of white people don't realize how lucky they are/were to be born white. I'm thankful I was born into the time/culture/background that I was. I don't think I'd have been strong enough to live through some of these awful injustices and terrors. And hopefully each generation gets better. I love when I read books like this. They make me think about So. Much. I had a hard time doing this video b/c I had so much to say but also worried I'd offend people. Oh, and the book journal is on Amazon for less than $7 I think!! I hope you enjoy it. Thank you for your comment. xo
