- The 2023-24 season for Australia's flying-foxes has been a devastating one - for reasons that largely remain a mystery to researchers, thousands of bat babies (also known as pups) have been left orphaned.
Rescuers and carers have been inundated with calls for help. Some would have hundreds of the animals in their care, with many more coming in every day.
@annetteruzicka1507 worked alongside the carers on the front line to capture the devastation, along with the heartwarming connection between humans and the rescued flying-foxes.
She discusses in depth why these animals are so important to her, why they remain so misunderstood, why they're so crucial to the ecosystem, and what we can learn from them about reconnecting with the natural world.

They're so sweet! Thank you for caring for these gorgeous animals
Both the animals and the carers are just wonderful! 🧡
Not only would it be "a real shame to lose them", it would be catastrophic for Australian forests as flying foxes do most of the pollination. Without the bats, the forests will die.
❤❤❤❤ amitiés de 🇨🇭
Maui, HI, has eco - tourism to help replant the land. I wonder if Australia had considered this?
