  • In this video we take our broken 350Z CD008 gearbox and rebuild it with new synchros in 3rd, 5th and 6th. We also re-engineer the known issue of 3rd gear breaking with our own design of reground, hardened, tempered and electron beam welded gear. Hopefully after this work the gearbox will handle the 1000hp engine we are building.... fingers crossed!

    Thank you so much, I bought what I was told was a cd009 with a bad third gear syncro but it turns out it is a cd008 now that I’ve gotten into it. I already had the cd009 syncro so you just saved me $200 and 2 weeks of waiting. I really appreciate this.

Clear and precise video, last Z video i tried to suffer through on replacing the synchros showed nothing but a bunch of non-related shit.

    Have you cross-referenced the 3rd gear part number with the later transmissions and the truck CD009? Maybe Nissan did a fix for the issue you found. Just a thought. I know most guys over here never consider Nissan truck parts when doing builds.

    • @Concept5North
      @Concept5North  3 года назад +1

      There seems to be 3 different part numbers for the 3rd gear, and it is used on the Fairlady (Z33, Z34), Stagea (AM35), and Skyline (V35). The three are 32260-CD404, 32260-CD014, 32260-CD004, but which are which I don't know. I think the only difference is the number of drive slots for the synchro drive ring and they all are two piece brazed construction, so all break!

      Thanks for the comment! It's not a big in-your-face drift smokey video, but we felt the technical content was unique on RUclips (don't know of anyone else who's posted a vid repairing a 350Z box) and shows we are finding unique solutions to common problems without just emptying our wallet for a 10 grand Quaife box which is the route many others are taking :-)

    Let me start off by letting you know how much i have enjoyed your video. Keep rocking on !!
    What i have noticed in the nissan cd series transmission is premature wear on the teeth of the synchro sleeves even before the synchro bulk ring begins to wear.
    The parts to rebuild for these transmissions are getting more and more expensive, let alone the time involved to overhaul.
    I've replaced more hub & sleeves then i have bulk synchros. And have been able to tig weld the brazed ring onto 3rd gear.

    • @Concept5North
      @Concept5North  4 года назад +1

      interesting about the tig weld repair, I just went straight to electron beam as I know that is the go-to method for high performance gears. But yes, basically all the CD series synchros are made of cheese, it does matter which gearbox version you have, they are all prone to very early stage wear.

    • @frankgarcia563
      @frankgarcia563 4 года назад +1

      @@Concept5North believe when i say that my ambition of cracking these open and repair came from frustration.
      I've been contemplating the idea of modifying a bad spare we have here (cd001) by modifying it to
      " slip shift " by machining off every other synchro tooth & synchro slider sleeve tooth and ever other synchro engagement tooth on the gear. This method ive personally never used but have heard of being used in gm t56 and 70's and 80's manual transmissions.
      Have you heard of this?

    • @Concept5North
      @Concept5North  4 года назад +2

      No I haven't, I'm more into engines that gearboxes but we fixed this as it seemed no-one had really sorted the CD*** gearbox problem without just buying a £10k Quaife sequential, which is way out of our means, and not how we roll anyway. The standard synchros are okay, you've just got to accept they need to be changed every 20,000 miles! first gearbox I've ever known that eats internals so badly. Shame, as they are a good strong gearbox other than that fail on the brazed joint and the poor synchro design.

But pulled it out and tore it down as the where I have the shafts out of the main plate. I haven’t got to press anything off the counter shaft yet but what I can see is 3&4th synchros look black while 1&2 are bronze. I’m assuming the black looking synchros are single/double cone?
      Also any tips on how you removed the spacers and hub for 3rd and 4th gear?

      To get the gear out of the gearbox you can just copy the video process, or get a copy of the 350Z Nissan workshop manual and follow the steps on there. You need a puller for the reverse gear, and a shop press to get the bearings on/off. Any electron beam welding company should be able to weld it up for you, just search online

    You sir are a dead set legend!! I've had nothing but dramas with these trannys.. I could really use your expertise please.
    I did a manual trans swap on a 2002 V35 sedan 8 speed CVT model. I've been through 3 gearboxes, CD001- No third gear, CD003- No third gear, and now a ~160km CD009- NVH around 2k rpm in 2nd gear and hectic NVH from 3rd-6th under 2k rpm under load then noise goes away, makes driving in traffic and in general super shit. Also a whirring sound in 5th and 6th on the highway aswell as crunching into 5th unless I go super easy into it.
    Do you have any idea on what would be causing this and what parts you'd recommend replacing for a rebuild?
    I have dropped the gearbox for the 5th time last week to replace the thrust and pilot bearing just to rule that out, even though I used all new parts on the install and NVH is still there. It has been a really disheartening experience but I am determined to get it right. I'm just a guy who wants to do some skids and go drifting, and I can't sell the car like this also.
    I really appreciate the content mate!
    Cheers

    • @Concept5North
      @Concept5North  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the kind comments! Well the 3rd gear issues, that will be the broken braze joint and all the CD gearboxes use that same gear, so the crazy overpriced CD009 everyone pays too much for, they are no stronger than any other, just the synchros last a bit longer, but not forever. Our car has solid mounted engine and almost solid gearbox, , no carpets or sound deadening, plus twin plate non sprung ceramic clutch so its horribly noisy. Usually the NVH would be too much end clearance and worn synchos. The ones I've taken to bits usually look okay on the bearings but still are noisy.
      I've never put a full set of new bearings in to see if that would sort it as we are not too bothered about noise, just strength! I've found the CD gearboxes generally noisy anyway. If you want to send me your broken 3rd gear parts I'm doing a batch of modified ones as per the video.
