The scene where the actor comes out of exam hall the parents asking him about if the exam had ended reminds me of the same culture in india where parents wait for their children out of examhall. Nostalgic

This movie is almost a different genre from most plot-driven films. It unfolds like a cinematic version of a great Russian novel - which could never be well translated to a movie version.
Although it moves slowly, the situations and topics are sophisticated and the scenes reveal life’s mysteries and paradoxes without the crutch of Western philosophical framing and in a way that seems more natural.

Definitely my favourite part of the movie, but it could have cut so much just for this final scene to be so much stronger. Now, I quit around 2h20m, after the discussion with the imams, because I got bored of all the references to other existential material and literature, and the last act is so weak I simply didn't care anymore, up until the father returned. This movie really drags along because it wants to be like Tarkovsky and it's knocking itself down a notch because of it.

The look of the grandfather is the same with İdris' look at the Sinan. They all become one and eachother. It's a disease that they can't escape. They all felt same disappointment when they saw their son in the well. Sinan will feel the same disappointment if his son fail to escape Çan, and finding his own unique identity within the similar, pea-like looking society of the Çan. Every Turkish child is doomed to live this dilemma. It's depressing and half of us doesn't survive this. We either hang our hopes just like Sinan did, and go with the flow of corrupt society or we literally hang ourselves to finish this misery. The people who can escape usually work for the well being of other countries.

@@milk_cow_blues Believe it or not, but it's pretty much the same anywhere around the world. I live at the heart of Europe and even here people are torn between moving away from their families and their traditions to pursue a different career, or get stuck in the "village" (literally, or a family company) and give up on their dreams. It's a universal theme of shying away from your roots, but in the end roots are important to sustain growth.

@@bigchainring1977 I actually agree, this is something people who emulate Tarkovsky rarely take away from Tarkovsky: there should be a hint of magic in your movie if you want to show how beautiful ordinary life can be. This movie fails at doing so, and it really drags on for no real reason other than showing how "boring" and "depressing" rural Turkish life is. The only thing I got from it, is that the son is an asshole, no better than his father, and I don't feel sorry for him getting stuck in this village bc he's rather selfish and doesn't show any qualities that make him any different from his father.
