I just realized as Cerrit is making his 26 insight check, Brennan says *you've spent many years being exceptional, perceptive, intelligent, clever" and those words form the acronym EPIC. If that's an accident it's a poetic one, and if it isn't, well, Brennan's genius just continues to blow my mind.
brennan is amazing at getting people immersed into their characters. The little details that harken back to previous sessions, hes amazing at story telling like everything I've seen from him DMing is just top tier and always realistic and personal. Its like someone writing a novel around your party orated live to you. He choses his words so carefully to paint the perfect picture, and its obviously all ad libed to create such clear pictures in the minds of even the players that resonates with what they also envision, its no small feat. I love his stuff so much the fact this was just 4 episodes and its got the players in tears shows just how god damn good he is.
Agreed! He may not have the depth and breadth of voices and sounds compared to Matt but his world development, storytelling, and character integration are definitely on point!
@@JudgementFish I think he has plenty of voices, certainly not creature style stuff like matt but he is ON POINT with his voices for characters. Thats what gets people invested just look at his high fantasy stuff the first episode alone I couldn't image a more SPOT ON voice for all the parents in the party, like even if it doesn't sound like a female talking his portrayal of moms is completely on point where the tone of his voice doesn't even matter, because the personality resonates through that heavily.
@@Notaforumguy007 I also have the feeling, of course without disrespect to Matt, that he is better at acting children roles. Matts interpretation of Luke was a bit all other the place in terms of how children in that age act. Brennan was really spot on, especially with Cerrits son asking if HE did something wrong. Absolutely something i'd see my little brother saying in that moment
Thanks ECC! I didn't think of that until after I did the final render. I tend to think of how I could have done so many things differently after I publish the videos but thankfully I thought of this one before I made it public =)
If Travis proves to be half the dad he roleplays, then his son couldn't ask for any better. I'm coming to this video blind to the narrative, but this fact holds true clearer than anything else
This whole sequence makes me feel this all over again, honestly the best story Critical Role has told and that is saying something. Travis and Brennan just told a fantastically sad story so well.
Something subtle travis did, the first thing he said was "i didnt see this coming." When his daughter was talking to him, panicked, thinking she was in trouble for drinking thats all he said.
Dude, im a sheep i know it, but Calamity was THE BEST DnD ive ever seen played! The Best campaign and characters, and thats saying a LOT cuz i LOVE Vm, M9 and BH, thats not a knock on them, thats praise!
I'm not a father, and this still broke me. I'd like to think that I would make the same choice in a similar situation, but fucking hell. Tears were pouring out of my eyes here.
3:30 I love that of all of them Lou, most familiar with Brennan and his dramatic shenanigans, was the first to figure out _exactly_ what was about to happen when Cerritt said "I promise*" Yes i know he wound up keeping his promise, but in that moment I too was Lou as this is the only Critical Role I've seen and I'm literally only here cuz Dimension 20
it's an interesting fact that Brennan did this dad angle so good because i remember in one of the shows of Dropout, Izzy mentioned Brennan dream is to be a dad. I think this contributes on how he can implement his dream into the campaign and makes this rollercoaster of character arc
This is a great story that I really enjoyed. I really loved your visual effects as well. Making Brendan disappear a d the ring of fire as Travis’s character burned his home. Nice touch
I may be wrong but I think you may be the first person to make note of that, well in a comment at least =) Editing that part and the burning house at the end was fun...and cathartic
I know Travis is a goofy goober a lot of the time, but Got dang, he can act his ass off. You could tell he REALLY sank his teeth into this character and this story. Big credits to Brennen and his storytelling as well.
A lawman and father, in a world quickly collapsing before his eyes, makes a desperate attempt to get his children to safety. The floating city of Avalir, now under siege by demonic forces that his companions helped release into this world, has precious little time left before the onset of the Calamity. Racing the clock, Cerrit is able to save his children only with the help of his work partner that provided him two magical items that would transport them to their mother, hopefully far enough from the destruction that is about to happen. After tearfully telling a lie to his children that he would tell them all about it someday, fully expecting himself to die in the next few hours (as an Inquisitor he had a magical ring that would glow in the presence of someone telling a lie), he was left alone in his house after they were gone. Now that the end of the world was a possibility, he wandered through his house furious at his devotion to his work, a work that demanded so much of his time and left little for him to be the father he wanted to be. With zero time left to be with his children, Cerrit takes one last look in their room and realized how much like him they were...bright-eyed and full of curiosity for truth, knowledge, and his craft. Broken even further, he compartmentalized that part of himself and sealed it away...the city....the world needed him to focus for the fight that lay ahead... Or something like that =)
Does anyone know the music playing at 6:12, i've been trying to find it for ages, since its appeared in this oneshot and a skit series... still no luck
The ring Cerrit used would glow when it was in proximity to people telling lies; very useful when you are the "Law" of Avalir. In this scene it glowed since he himself was telling lies to his children to help keep them calm, everything would be ok, and that he would explain things when he saw them again, except in his heart he was fully expecting to die in the next few hours and never see them again...
Sam is a Father, just like Travis. He's contemplating what it would be like, if he had to lie to his own children to keep them calm and send them to safety. Knowing full-well, that you'll never see them again.
The line "...you solve the mystery of you children truly were," really is devastating.
I'm here rewatching it back now just as I start work and I'm going to have to explain to my manager why it looks like I've been sobbing
I luckily stayed up way too late and watched it live and this line rendered me inconsolable for at least an hour.

Jesus, Brennan hit not only Travis in the feels, but Sam as well. These dads are having a hard time processing this story.
Travis' whole story line had me in my feels
As a father with a young daughter that acts similarly to myself, I couldn't help but get stabbed by the feels repeatedly!
I think the only other time I've seen Sam this choked up was when he couldn't save Vax

Showing that picture of their family, and then showing that picture again at the end.
Truly wonderful story telling just through visuals alone.

I imagine he's a fantastic father...who has to stay clear of the Mall Santas...
I'm praying so hard that with the Amazon deal CR has made that EXU: Calamity gets made into an animated movie.
Critical Role projects will get me to pay any amount of money to Amazon to see them
This whole sequence makes me feel this all over again, honestly the best story Critical Role has told and that is saying something. Travis and Brennan just told a fantastically sad story so well.

5:32 oh, pretty sure that was the sound of my FUCKING HEART BREAKING
Good edit and use of fx, the slow creeping fire God it just hits Home 😢
Appreciate it VS! I do apologize for any EMOTIONAL DAMAGE inflicted by the abundance of feels in my Cerrit Saga =)

Kudos on the choice of music. My 2 favourite things combined
Thanks W41ton! If you happen to watch Ep 4 of the Cerrit saga you will be in for another treat =)
LOVE the fire burning around the whole screen after he sets his office on fire! super dope!
Lou in the background acting like Sully when he saw the trash compactor

I watch more D20 than CR but from what I’ve seen, it seems like Sam is the hardest to make cry. Crazy to see him get so caught up here.
D&D is not supposed to make me cry :"(
I know CR just teased a feature film in their new Rolling Stone interview. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LET IT BE A CALAMITY MOVIE TO GIVE US THIS ENDING.
the music added is rather distracting to what is happening. One of the most epic moments
....is that the ff7 music for the first mission?
Yup your ears don't deceive you! That is Hurry! from FF7
What is the name of the background music you added to the Cerrit scene?
Main character vibes! ;O;
What is the name of the song at the beginning? I know it's from FF7, but I don't know the name.
That song is Hurry! =)
@@JudgementFish THANK YOU!

The music definitely was the wrong choice for the part with the kids, but man was this a great moment in CR history.
Really? Thought it synchronized with the scene really well tbh.
Sam is always the funny man, so to see him cringe and fight back tears bloody ruined me!
I really feel he was hit with his past events in his life
