    This month, I'd like to talk about the track "Out of the Blue," from my latest CD, All Over the Place (available from the Heads Up International division of the Concord Music Group). This record is aptly named, because it features a variety of different musical styles, represented across the 11 new original compositions I penned for the record.
    In writing the music, I had in mind the specific styles that I wanted to touch upon, as well as the talents of all of the great musicians that play on the record, such as bassists Anthony Jackson, Richard Bona, Victor Wooten, Dave Holland, Tom Kennedy, Will Lee and Victor Bailey, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, trumpeter Randy Brecker, and drummers Dave Weckl, Keith Carlock and Lionel Cordew.

    By the way here's a fact.
    Mike Stern and Robben Ford played with Miles Davis.
    Miles Davis the jazz legend.
    Just because there's blues roots in your soul doesn't mean you shouldn't explore jazz.
    Just because you like complex harmony doesn't mean blues or pentatonic scales should be overlooked.
    Just appreciate it all and learn and grow from it.

    i like the fact that he doesn't use his trademark chorus/pitch-shift sound here - suits him well :-)

    Great playing. And, an important lesson! Killer melodies, funky grooves, complimentary lines, ALL sitting in the pocket as was emphasized in the lesson. I'm all for occasional shredding and taking it out a bit, so to speak. However as I've said for years, chops are meaningless without groove. Put them together and it's fire!

    If you have heard everything Mike has recorded than you are no doubt familiar with his album of standards. He swings, and plays changes. He plays tunes like Giant Steps. Furthermore when he plays at 55 Bar he plays a lot of bebop tunes. Great swing feel, great lines. You either don't know what you're talking about or you're misrepresenting the truth.

    This is not just an opinion.This is what the creators and the legends of jazz say.Jazz is harmonic and rhythmic sophistication.That's how jazz got started ,you know.From classical music's harmonic sophistication and African music's rhythms.There is no way to regress neither of those things and have it as jazz at the end.

    Robben Ford was originally known as a jazz fusion guitarist. He was a co-founder of the band "The Yellowjackets". Seriously you need to get your facts straight.

    Give me 1 song or a video where Robben Ford's solos are more than pentatonic blues licks.

      PetarDambovaliev Ummm, Help The Poor? Lydian Dominant all over. Anything with Jing Chi, the Yellowjackets, Tom Scott, anything from his fusion records. You haven't listened to ant of Robben's stuff...

    I love the blues bro it's always embedded in myplaying.Hendrix,BB&SRV are my biggest influences.Butwhen itcomes to soloing,i see to it that i play myownstyle and melodic ideas asmuch astrying to be wannabe Hendrix orSRV. Many ofthe bluesplayers are stuck to the pentatonic,& they're contented with that.We have to respect that,but personally for me,if you're stuck with that,then you're prohibiting yourself to growmusically. I'd dig your advise,but it always depends on the contentment of the player

  • @AtanasovPetar

    How?Robben Ford has never played Fusion or jazz.

  • @guitariffic
    @guitariffic 11 лет назад

    You're probably referring to the typical kind of jazz as we know it. But there many kinds of jazz. You probably haven't heard of Robben's jazz playing ability. Try to search more, outside of his records. Because most of his records are bluesy.

    By the aura and the look bro. By the way he played jazz before he came back to the blues.

  • @guitariffic
    @guitariffic 11 лет назад

    Yeah, but probably not the type of jazz that mike does. His jazz ones aren't well documented, but he played in jazz band before he went solo.

    Jazz is swinging and chord changes.If it doesn't have both then it's probably not jazz.

    I would advise people to stop copying blues guys because its obvious and annoying.You hear the same thing over and over until you can't handle it anymore and start to hate it.

      Play substitution chords on blues. It makes it way more musical.

  • @AtanasovPetar

    I have heard everything that he recorded,never heard him play music with changes.Everything he does is blues licks over 1 chord.Jazz is not licks and certainly not 1 chord.

    I am so fed up with all the millions pentatonic players that my ears get instantly violated when i hear another pseudo blues lick.If it's not one of the original guys like Hendrix and BB king,i just don't want to hear someone else copying them.Should advise young players to stop playing pseudo blues licks and start to study harmony,get interesting harmonic ideas.

    This is an incredibly narrow view of jazz. Move to NYC and you will discover people stopped thinking this way in the 60s.
