  • The Conservatives were focusing on education policy today, promising to target universities that are "ripping off" young people, and drive a shift towards apprenticeships - with 100 thousand new places by the end of the next parliament.

Let's get rid of the PPE course from Oxford and all those useless History, Classical Studies degrees that the Tory Toffs always seems to get.
How many politicians have got a Maths, Science or Engineering degree? a tiny minority. The whole Tory party is built on "Mickey Mouse" degrees! How dare they decide who gets to study higher education and what they study! Johnson and Rees-Mogg studied Classics...great...they can spout a few ancient Greek and Latin proverbs...just what the country needs..

No they haven't. 2010-2015 was a coalition. A different government that encouraged people to go to university, but also raised tuition fees.
2015-2016 was David Cameron. Same guy from the coalition. He and the county were focused on Brexit
2016-2021 was various governments trying to get Brexit done
Liz Truss couldn't do anything because she governed for 1 month. She might have introduced this policy if she had remained PM.
The only leaves Rishi, who's announcing this policy because we have a general election approaching

Why not get rid of the PPE course run at Oxford University? That is the awful course that many of the Tory politicians take in order to "run the country". Liz Truss did PPE at Oxford. Say no more. This is just a cynical attempt to deny young people a higher education. They know that most people who develop a brain - i.e. learn critical thinking skills - do NOT vote Tory. This is a disgusting policy that is trying to take us back to serfdom...as everything the Tories has done over the past 14 years has been designed to. The young are really taking the brunt of the Tories ire. First Brexit denied them Freedom of Movement. Now you have to stay prisoner in this country and do -national service- unpaid slave labour and then straight down t'mines for an apprenticeship.
How do the Tories get to decide what is and is not a "mickey mouse" degree?? I nominate PPE from Oxford. Casestudy: Liz Truss. Classics too! Johnson and Rees-Mogg did useless Classics! Great..you can read ancient Greek!

The Tories are making up policy on the spot, I suspect from the results of focus groups or from gut prejudice, because they are desperate to try and shift those poll figures in their favour. However they have no means or plan or costings to achieve what they are promising and their record in office shows how incompetent and ineffective they are with delivery anyway. I suspect they will target degrees they disapprove of in a philistine way.

Higher education is basically free in Germany and Finland. How about that?
I know everything needs to be paid for somehow. But a higher education system that forces 17-year-olds to think about their education first and foremost as an investment to get themselves out of debt while the PM's wife doesn't have to pay taxes in any meaningful sense is a broken system.

nothing wrong with retraining existing workers.. people with experience advance in their career... young people get the entry roles... they advance and get trained also. Where we have a problem is when they rely on overseas cheap skills and dont bother to pay for Brit workers to be trained at all.
If you really wanted to wreck the uni system you'd make it possible for private companies to offer university courses providing they meet educational standards. Uni is now a racket... and a stealth tax on workers.. they close off the employment market in places where effectively you wouldnt practically need a degree. Luckily that is different in areas of the tech industry where skills are in short supply.. but that in itself is proof a degree isnt as necessary as its being made out to be.
Frankly, whilst uni education has its place for traditional and modern highly academic specialisms.. its ballooned into a get rich quick scheme.. a cash cow for those invested in it... and its a huge block to skills in this country.. precisely the opposite of what it used to be.. and what its supposed to be.. its just another way this country has been turned into a rich persons playground and cash cow.. to the detriment of the common person.. and by common I also means those that come out of uni with massive debt.

.I am your sister from Yemen, and by Allah I only spoke out of hunger and distress. My mother, my brothers, and I lessons and tears. We are in a situation that only God knows about. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs for those who brought us to this situation. By Allah Almighty, I did not write this appeal out of distress and distress. Poverty, O world, they have felt it So, I hope for you. By Allah Almighty, Lord of the Great Throne, he ate what I had in the house. By Allah, my brothers, he is my brothers by sitting in the house. Who has no food? By God, we are in a very difficult situation. We have 6 people entering the house, and my father has died, and there is no one who can depend on us and who lives in it.We live in a rented house because we cannot pay the rent we owe. I am a Yemeni girl displaced from the war. My family and I live in a rented house in Al-Shahrab 15,000 Yemenis among us, and now we owe 45,000 for 3 months. The owner of the house is one of the people who does not have mercy, by God, my brother. He comes every day, insulting us, talking about us, and moving from the house to the street because we were unable to pay him the rent. The neighbors saw us crying and came back. They came back to talk to the neighbors and we were given the weekend. So we made him swear by God. He will take us out into the street. Have mercy on him and us. Our country is due to this war and we do not find food for our day, and my brothers and I live in a difficult life. Our father died, may God have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who was with us in these harsh circumstances. My younger brothers went out into the street and saw...The neighbors eat and stand at their door in order to give them bread even if they break it. By God, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them and came back crying. They are dying of hunger. No one has mercy on them and a holiday is returned. I have made a living, and now if one of us helps us with a kilo of flour, I swear to God, I am dying of hunger. My brother, I am an alien to God. Then, I ask you to help me for the sake of God. I ask you, by God, to love goodness and to help me, even if you can, by messaging me on WhatsApp.On this number 00967717415667 and ask for the name of my card and send it and do not be late and may God reward you with all the best, my brothers Sagar, see how they are and help us and save us before they throw us out in the street, you will be lost or we will die of hunger. Universities are not just there to provide vocational education!! What happened to learning for learning's sake!! Being passionate about a subject and loving learning about it is a discipline in itself. Everyone who goes to University researches thoroughly the content of their courses and CHOOSES their course, examining whether it will suit them or not. This guy is just another Tory liar. I'm sick of them gaslighting us ALL the frickin' time!! Their policy on apprentice schemes has been yet another failure in the litany of failures they have presided over.

What happened is they started charging for university education and then everything became about the balance sheet. The thing that makes me really angry about this is that the politicians who did this had grants when they went to university.
They know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

If you are the sort of person that complains British culture is being eroded and then want to replace philosophy, art and music degrees with business and computing apprenticeships then you are part of that problem.

    • @GonzoTehGreat
      @GonzoTehGreat 3 месяца назад

Disagree. The UK already has too many mediocre artists who are unemployed or even worse, unemployable. It doesn't need more.
Business & Management Degrees are a complete joke. Running a business or managing a team isn't an academic discipline that you can learn at university. All such qualifications should be scrapped. Indeed, it's criminal that they're even offered.
Instead, vocational training and apprenticeships need to be expanded, especially for jobs in manufacturing and industry, but also training for trades, such as mechanics, plumbers, electricians, builders etc.
There's also a shortage of STEM graduates, who are needed for STEM jobs, which actually contribute to improving the quality of life of people by raising living standards over time.
