  • The conservatives are saying that they will create 100,000 more skilled apprenticeships within one year if they win the general election. As part of the new policy, 1-in-8 students could also see their university course axed in a bid to cut down on so-called Mickey Mouse degrees.
Richard Madeley questions the Minister for Schools Damian Hinds on the government's new pledge to end so-called 'rip off degrees'.

The last thing the Tories want is an educated population. Little Tarquin will have too much competition for that CEO job, and with a half decent education they're not gonna believe the lies and those 3 word slogans either!

Tories cut around 150,000 apprenticeships. Slipped in that they want to make sure people earn enough to pay back loans - his example supposes there are thousands of jobs at £80,000 and not at £18k.

WHY NOT TRAIN APPRENTICESHIP TO CONNECT TO TOP TECH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING ? (IF I WAS A YOUNG PERSON I WOULD BE SO EXCITED BY THESE PROSPECTS.

Teh comment he made about one person on 80k and the other 18k is silly. A) the one on 18k might be working for a small company B) They could a be a different type or computer job like a IT technician at a school c) or (like me) cpulsnt get a job in thst field because of no experience working.
I got a degreee in Buisness and every time i applied i didnt hear back or was told youbdont have 1 year experience i sales or marketing or administration. It actually was dumb luck i got my current job to get experience in administration

PM Rishi Sunak is making a mistake because no university course in the modern age is useless, and what needs to change is modification of the syllabus to include diversified innovative modules.

    • @ibukunogunfeitimi5645

For example, I studied management at the postgraduate level, and I benefited enormously from the process and methodology of solving problems via managing information in general terms, which is not confined to computing. Most importantly, university courses must include the process and methodology of innovation, which is likely to transform lives and businesses across the UK and beyond 💡

As he said they work on normalisation - as they now expect education to 18 - then there are fewer to sanction as he called it or fines/prison to us. Seemed popular in 30s Germany.

To be fair for Toris they had been good with apprenticeships and up skill, skill development for many without any strings attached, especially after COVID. They were consistent with that policy.

Good idea... fully support it... however it's too little too late for the tories... had too much time in charge and everything is still a mess... brilliant idea that will unfortunately take years to come back around...
Zombie studies... social studies.... media studies... social care.... scrap them all!
All the social stuff would serve much better as apprenticeships

    • @charliechalk

Any practical degree should be an apprenticeship, though people need to realise that some things can't be taught via an apprenticeship, e.g. History for those wanting to become a History teacher
