  • Review of my DIY Intex Pool Hacks and upgrades.
    I am constantly thinking of new DIY upgrades that can be done to my Intex pool. The things seen in this video is only the beginning. I have plans for more in the future that includes laminar jets outside of the pool. Stay tuned cause I think I am addicted..

      @@ChuckTate77 love the video and upgrades we too have the Intex 16×48 ultra steel frame pool just got it in May 2020 during covid we got so much use out of it this past summer i were in the midwest(Illinois)and we are leaving it up for the winter i see you updated your filter and pump what gph did you upgrade too? Was the skimmer addition worth it? Would the skimmer work with the 2100gph sand filter that came with ours do you think? I see all your plumbing upgrades are you in a cold climate state that you have to winterize? Thanks in advance!!

      @@iamkazie9401 Thanks for the comment! I'll try to answer all your questions. Congrats on the pool! The pool has probably been one of our family's most valued possessions during COVID. Since vacations or local water park visits were not possible, Its kept us somewhat sane through the summer months.. :). We leave ours up year-round too. We drain the pool below all pool cutouts/outlets, put a new tarp over it every year, drop in a pool closing pill and just skim the leaves out throughout the winter months. Opening the pool in late spring is super easy and, believe it or not, we still have clear water at opening. We drain that water anyway so that we don't have to fight getting the chemicals right. (The water was really only left in there to keep the pool from blowing away during the winter) I did upgrade our filter/pump. I upgraded to the Intex 2450gph sand pump. Besides the upgraded pump, the skimmer was probably my next best modification. It seriously keeps the pool water clean. It allows me to also use a traditional pool vacuum and hose too to clean the bottom of the pool too. This skimmer would work with your pool also and I would highly recommend doing it to your pool. This is my 2nd pool with the cut in skimmer. The hardest part is getting past having to cut your liner to your brand new pool. But after cutting in my first skimmer, cutting my brand new liner was not a problem at all because 1) I never had a problem with the first one and 2) I knew the benefits of having this type of skimmer. During the winter, I remove all of my fittings to the pool. I also drain my pump and chlorine generator and store those in my shed. I blow air in the PVC pipes to blow out the excess water and duck tape the ends of the PVC once complete. I hope my comments help you. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'd be happy to answer them.

      @@ChuckTate77 WOW that was a fast response lol Do you think the pump should be upgraded if installing the skimmer ? I have no problem cutting the liner and adding it. @@iamkazie9401 I seen your video and I think your current pump would work just fine. What's size holes did you drill to get it to mist instead of spray?
    When you cut the hole for the skimmer, how much water did you have to let out?
    Just a few inches below the cut, half way between the cut & the bottom, or did you empty it?
    Did you reinforce the hole in any way?
    I actually have a skimmer given to me from a much larger pool, so I've been wondering about all this.

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  4 года назад +3

      Danny Clark I didn’t drill any holes for the misters, they are actual mist nozzles sized to match the water pressure. I drained my pool below the skimmer just so I didn’t have to contend with the water as I was installing the skimmer but I didn’t have to drain it. When installing the Hayward skimmer the last thing you do is cut the liner for the skimmer hole. I just made sure where my waterline normally sat landed in the middle of my skimmer hole. The liner is not reinforced in any way. I have never had any leaks or issues with the skimmer. It works just as intended.

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  3 года назад +1

      I no longer have the Coleman hot tub. I now have an Intex hot tub. The Coleman's heater/pump went out and those heater/pumps are difficult to find replacement parts. I do love the hot tub though and it is well worth the money. My wife does the bills so I wouldn't know for sure BUT I would think if it was a significant increase she would have mentioned it. I would assume running the heater/pump during the winter wouldn't increase the electric bill more than $10-$20 a month. Small price to pay for the enjoyment in my opinion.

      Thanks Daniel! Its actually built using warped cedar fence pickets that I picked up from the neighbor (neighbor owns a fencing company). I just went and bought a cheap $20 cooler from Walmart. Separated the lid from the cooler and basically built a box around the cooler and a box around the lid. Put both boxes together and installed the hinges to each side of the boxes that I just built. I left the corners (legs) of the cooler box long so that it could sit the cooler at the same level as the pool. Finally, just deck stained it all.

    Great setup, nice pool. What size pvc pipe did you use to hook up to the inlet hose? I am confused as how to make that T (spliter). that goes to the inlet and off to that valve that goes to the mist

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  4 года назад

      Thanks! The "T" isn't necessary. I only put the T in there to try to run my misters off the pool pump or a water hose. I was unsuccessful with the pool pump as the mist nozzles require higher pressure than what the pool pump provides (I think about 25-35 psi is my pump's psi). The misters would only drip water using the pool pump.. Lol. and that low of pressure nozzles were not available for purchase at the time. So, I only ever used the water hose hook up as it does provide enough pressure. I had to switch out my nozzles to match my city's water pressure (I think its about 65-70 psi) but the nozzles are cheap. If you don't replace them to match whatever your pressure is you'll either get spitting nozzles or they only drip water. I used 1/2" PVC and since this will not operate off your pool pump you will only need the 1/2" PVC to all of you 1/2" PVC nozzle connectors (I bought the 1/2" connectors that have mister nozzles already in them from Amazon), a 1/2" PVC "T" (depending on where you want your hose connection) a 1/2" PVC ball valve if you want to shut the misters off without getting out of the pool and a 1/2" hose connection. Then just find a way to strap it all to your pool frame. I hope this all makes sense. If not, just let me know what you need clarification on. Thanks for watching!

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  3 года назад

      I sorry for the late reply. I was just going through the comments and seen you have asked a question. I run my pump 24/7 but my generator I run 4-6 hours a day. Its easier for me this way. The reason I run the pump 24/7 is we get a lot of power flashes during the summer. These power flashes end up resetting the timer on the pump. So next time the pump and generator start up the pump may run at a different time than the generator and error out because there is no pump flow. If i dont catch this and reset the generator it will not work. I may go 4-5 days before noticing the generator needs a reset and during these 4-5 days no chlorine was being generated. To avoid this, I just run the pump 24/7 so it doesnt matter when the generator kicks on, I always have pump flow.

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  2 года назад

      It does bubble a little. I believe the air ingress coming from the furnco right before the pump because if I shut off the pump it slowly leaks water from that fitting . It’s never ran dry and I’ve never had a problem with air locking the pump so I’ve never tried to hunt down where it’s coming from. I run my pump 24/7 and the bubbles eventually work their way out after running for a day or so.

      Yes, I had to level the ground. I rented a tiller to loosen the dirt then dug out about 2"-3" of dirt. Filled with concrete sand and leveled the sand by hammering a stake in the middle with a long 2"x4" screwed to the top of the stake. Have you noticed any issues with having the PVC attached, buried, with no hoses to sort of take up the motion of the pool? I saw a warning about that somewhere on RUclips. I have pvc attached to hoses before going to my pump (and I’d love to bury it like you did) because my kids (and I) can really get the waves going and I feel like it needs to have some give.

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  3 года назад

      I’ve had my pool piped like this for 4-5 seasons now and haven’t had any issues. But, I do have long pieces of PVC going from the pool fitting to the first 90 in the ground along with a rubber furnco at the top. I have a 16 yo, and him and his friends (about 8 of them) get those waves going and have also done the whirlpool in the pool and I’ve never had any issue. I mention my son only because you know how teenage boys try and make the biggest and fastest waves and whirlpools.. lol. And if it has lasted through their torment then I’m not too worried about it.
      If you wanted, you could add a fernco in the middle of your PVC that goes into the ground. Like adding a 1-1/2” to 1-1/2” fernco in the middle for no reason but to provide additional flexibility between the moving pool sides and your static PVC.

      Unfortunately I do not. Not sure if you're interested in doing the skimmer hack or not but this allows me to use a normal pool hose and vacuum head with my pool. I also have the Intex automatic vacuum and even with my pump (2150 gph) it is hit or miss if its going to work properly. Sometimes I get it hooked up and it will only go one direction and this is even after backflushing the pump. I have even taken the vacuum apart and greased one of the gears to maybe help it switch directions. I finally got it to work after disassembly and reassembly but it is still hit or miss with that thing..

    how many hours a day do you start your pump, and how do you have your crystal clear water?

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  4 года назад

      Pathy I run my pump 24/7 and my chlorine generator 6 hours a day. We get power flashes often throughout the summer. This would often throw off the timing of the pump and chlorine generator and one would try to run while the other wasn’t on. To avoid this, I just run my pump all the time and chlorine generator the required amount of time. So if power does flash again, my only worry is making sure both devices have power. Hope that makes sense. :). I keep my pool clean just by running my equipment, checking the chemicals in the water and vacuuming about once a week.

      I dug up about 2" worth of dirt while keeping the bottom of my 2" pit as even as possible. Laid down 2" worth of concrete sand to bring the sand just a little proud of ground level. Hammered a stake in the middle of where my pool will be until the top of the stake was even with the top of the sand. Screwed the end of a straight 10' 2"x4" to the top of the stake. Taped a long level to the 2"x4". Spun the 2"x4" in circles keeping the 2"x4" level while knocking down high spots and filling low spots with concrete sand as I went around in circles. Once that was complete and level, I soaked (flooded) the sand and did the leveling all over again. I did this 2 more times for a total of 4 times. Note: Soaking (flooding) the sand allows the sand to settle into all of the little voids in the sand and "locks" the sand together.

      @@scott9083 No problem with the questions. This is the hardest part for everyone and if its not done right you wont be satisfied, so ask away! Don't be too worried about removing the stake without disturbing the sand. Once its removed, just fix what you messed up. The main point is that you are now level across the width of the pool. So just fill the hole with sand (and level with the sand around it) and you're good. But You actually have 2 options here with the stake. Either you can remove the stake or sledge hammer the stake deep into the dirt and fill the hole with sand. I did the latter. :). One thing I should have put in my earlier post about leveling the sand is to make sure the 2"x4" is on its side. A 2"x4" on its face over a 10' span will have lots of bow to it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  3 года назад +1

      Let me say this, I've had Intex pools with and without saltwater. The pool WITHOUT saltwater had to be replaced at the end of its 5th season due to rust. My pool WITH saltwater, which is what you see in the video, is being replaced this spring due to rust and I would have been going into it's 5th season with it. So did the saltwater shorten the pools life? I don't know, its hard to say because all Intex metal frame pools are known to rust. That being said, it may have shortened my pool's life by maybe 1 season but the time & money not spent maintaining the pool during the swim seasons is well worth the shortened pool life. I know my response doesn't give you a definitive answer but that's my experience with Intex metal frame pools with/without saltwater.

Obviously, most of the country had that deep freeze this winter and we had temps -10 degrees or so and the pool survived just fine.

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  4 года назад

      @@vhernandez4792 I agree that the pump that comes with the pool is undersized. I felt that the pump wasnt circulating the water enough even though I kept the filters clean all the time. This is why I upgraded to the sand filter. 1) I was tired of cleaning and/or replacing paper filters, 2) I feel that they don't catch the small stuff and 3) it was undersized. One thing you might consider too, along with upgrading your filter/pump, is also pool placement. My pool is in the sun all day and the UV light helps control the bacteria (but it also burns the chlorine too but can be remedied by running the salt water chlorine generator longer). A lot of people want to keep their pool close to shade but doing this makes it a more suitable environment for bacteria and debris. Granted, this can be remedied with proper pool chemicals and cleaning but you have to be more on top of it throughout the season.

    What's the difference in having salt systen?

    • @ChuckTate77
      @ChuckTate77  4 года назад +1

      Chlorine systems are hard on your hair, skin, clothes and require lots of maintenance to keep the water at the correct pH, alkalinity, free chlorine, etc. With the salt system, there is no effect on skin, hair or clothes. Also, you don't have to keep up with chlorine tablets anymore. Salt water pool chlorine generators pull the salt from the water and turn to chlorine and in doing it this way keeps your water stabilized throughout the season. Overall, salt pools just require less maintenance. You should still always check your chemical levels just in case but maintenance is nearly zero with salt pools. Just add your salt at the beginning of the pool season, turn on your chlorine generator and your done. I still pull my generator about once a months and fill distilled vinegar and let it sit to clean the plates but besides that, that's really the only maintenance I have to do during the pool season.

      @@myuploadsvideos I understand that concern. This is our 3rd ultra frame pool and corrosion happens on these pools with or without being a salt pool. My first pool was chlorine only and it still corroded in the joints and legs. I think its actually a fault in Intex's coating process. I dont think they get enough coating (if any at all) inside the legs or joints to keep the metal from rusting. Also, I have not noticed an increase in corrosion using salt vs. chlorine as all 3 pools seem like they lasted about the same amount of time. I do know that with our next pool I will be spraying FlexSeal down into the legs and around the joints though... Lol.
