    Clarification for your viewers: 06:26 Once SoCal Approach responded to your check-in with your tail number, then you are good to enter any Class C airspace, unless instructed otherwise. So since you made this connection before entering the March Class C, you were good to enter... UNTIL SoCal instructed 06:39 "outside of the March Class C"... and then came your nice rescue with the ForeFlight charts. Steve, as usual an excellent video. Thx. Wayne

    Nice video Steve, on that ATIS cutting in and out, you can turn the squelch off, make sure the flip flop arrow is on the active radio, then push the volume knob. Works most of the time for me. Take care.

    Here's a thumbs up to you; you're out there flying and putting your skills to use and learning new ones. It takes guts to break out of the comfort zone, and many never do. Sometimes your commentary is hard to hear with the background radio traffic, but that's the real world in busy places like SOCAL.

    Always learning! That is why I love watching these videos. I was just talking to my cfi about decent planning and the monkey wrench atc gives you with a crossing restriction. Great job. Btw just finished my 6th lesson. Progressing nicely for my ppl. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks Shane. Glad to see you are staying at it. Descent planning is important. What gos up must come down and doing it smoothly makes everybody feel better. The Garmin avionics takes alot of the math work out of it which makes my job alot easier. But one of these days that thing is going to fail me and I'll have to figure it out old school.     Love your vids Steve! Actually very helpful for me transitioning into a Cirrus from 800hrs on steam gauges in my 172. Mastering the avionics and automation is 99% of the work in these planes. More videos like this one showing best practices and tips / tricks using perspective would be great. Thanks for the excellent content!

      I am currently looking at 20 separate gauges on my Kenworth dash. It seems like a lot, yet each one is useful on its own way. The interesting part is how your eyes and brain start scanning across and only register when something isn’t in its normal range, essentially damping out all of the “noise” of twenty pieces of information so that you notice the one or two things that are critical. It’s interesting how that works.

      I have great respect for all the pilots who learned on the traditional steam guages. Keeping track of all those instruments and processing all that info is not easy. And I suppose that once you get used to that it becomes second nature. Having said that, when I started learning to fly I did virtually ALL my training on glass panels so that is all I know. I have flown a couple of planes since with the steam guages and a wall of instruments and while I managed to find my way around it convinced me more than ever that the modern glass panel setups are far and away much easier to use and provide relevant information in a much more compelling way. When things get 'critical' you get a yellow or red annunciation to grab your attention. When traffic is an issue you get audible and visible warnings while you still have a chance to 'fix' things. When you get to key altitude you get audible alerts. Now I know that for pilots who don't have access to glass panels they might be tempted to think that a good/real pilot does need all that stuff and they might be right. But I find it impossible to believe that a good/real pilot equipped with a modern glass panel setup will turn into a bad pilot once they get used to looking for that information in one centralize place. And I've had more than a few pilots who learned and still fly with old school instrument fly with me in the CIrrus. While they might have been a bit skeptical at first by the time we landed more often than not they were mightily impressed with how easy it was to make the transition and even more impressed with the capabilities that the Cirrus Perspective + avionics offered. Once you go digital I think its very hard to go back if you have the option.

      Trust me the first time I landed at PSP I started going for that 'runway' and I had actually read the airport info that warned me. Visually it just sucks you in. Fortunately the 31R threshold is much further down the road and I had time to correct and make it look like that was where I was going the whole time. But I knew. Now you know as well. Cheers-Ren

    I always learn something from your videos. The exchange you had with the Palm Springs tower regarding the landing traffic was actually really great to see, because it demonstrates in real life something that I think a lot of people think is theoretical -- the reason that "negative contact" is so different from "traffic in sight". When you said "no traffic in sight", he wasn't sure what you said, so he asked for clarification, and when you clarified, I think you stepped on the very end of his transmission, so he only heard "traffic in sight", and then instructed you to follow traffic you didn't yet see.

    I like when you leave the radio audio up for us. It just shows what sort of distractions are just “there” at all times, even on a routine flight.

    VFR flying utilizes a whole different set of skills, and often it is harder to fly VFR than IFR for the reasons you mentioned in the video. Definitely harder in SOCAL. Not so bad out here in NM !! Excellent video !!

      @@TheRenBaron quick question can you navigate nearly all the menus with just the center GCU not needing to use the soft keys on the g1000? Cheers

      @@pilothound1582 There are still some softkeys that you can't access on the GCU. Some that come to mind are Nearest, Engine, some MAP functions but its a small percentage of the pie that's for sure. You could pretty much count the times I hit a softkey of this video which is a pretty good representation of how I use the avionics system and where I'm accessing it. All the radio stuff, transponder, Flight plan, Alt and Hdg select, and autopilot stuff I prefer to access from the GCU.

    Love the videos. Recently certified Private Pilot, and N808DC (at the end of the video) is actually one of the planes I fly. Next thing I am looking forward to is receiving my Complex/HP Endorsements and Instrument Rating. However, because of my financial situation, it will probably be a while before that unfortunately. Thinking about starting a flying channel myself. Thought it might be interesting for people to see a UCSB student balancing college while also beginning their flying career. Anyway, maybe we can fly sometime. Keep up the great videos!

      Thanks Jake. So you are a UCSB Gaucho. Good stuff on the PPL. I get up to SB quite a bit so maybe we'll run into each other (not literally) at the airport one day and we'll go flying. It's kind of like my aviation equivalent of hitting a bucket of golf balls. Before you start that RUclips channel though I'd finish up at UCSB. I'm admittedly a third rate video editor but it takes alot of time to edit a flight to something watchable and the pay is not good at all. Cheers-Ren

As well as every one of my hero's it seems:-) Under my own name and with a regional California artist Cat Mclean. When Robin's wife got sick in 2014 I became band leader for Robin's singer at the time Davey Pattison. He was also Montrose's singer in Gamma. So we went out doing Montrose/Gamma and Trower music.     Nice video. Question on the video editing, ATC is pretty loud and sometimes you are narrating over ATC, making it hard to hear you. Can you put the ATC audio on one track and your narration on a second track, which would allow you to turn the ATC volume down when it’s just chatter with other airplanes and they aren’t talking to you?
    You have an awesome airplane and it’s been fun watching you improve and master the new plane and avionics!

    During climb out, you say “there’s our little shake, rattle and roll” ... what are you referring to?

      The nose wheel rattles a bit as it stops rolling. If I hit the brakes after liftoff it would not happen but usually I have my right foot shoving the right rudder in and don't hit the brakes. It's no big deal.

    Oh, wouldn’t it be nice if we all pilots had a million dollar aircraft to practice in every day, but I guess that’s what most California pilots have. Not so much here in the east coast.
