I've always been unhappy that we have a system of punishment rather than one of justice. I understand that the victims of crimes (or their families) want the perpetrator to be punished. That's behavioral biology, right there. But everyone else? We should be urging for rehabilitation, not perpetual incarceration.
When people think of crimes, they think of the worst crimes. But those are the minority. Almost all people deserve a second chance. Stealing stuff is not a crime that should ruin your life.
Ok, a dumb person makes a bad decision. Jail. Then what? You want them to be bad the rest of their lives. Dangerous and a drain on the community? Or, maybe, try rehabilitation so we stop that cycle? Everyone, try to think 2 steps about how to make our civilization more civil. Wanting to punish people is not how we become more civilized.

I also wonder what an appropriate time is for a crime, like I know that there are set times for crimes but who's to say those are fair times

Not breaking the law in the first place is an option, believe it or not.
Coward
It is, and yet your comment is still really ignorant.
Not always
Because nobody is ever falsely accused or arrested for a crime they didn't commit, right?
