    The ship's gravity crystal can indeed break. I had it happen once in my playthrough, didn't bother fixing it (because once you've lived through a few dozen loops, why bother repairing the ship as long as it can take you to where you're going?) but then made the mistake of unbuckling while autopilot was on.
    Turns out having a thing that makes you stick to the floor inside an accelerating ship is really important, because without it, as soon as I got out of the seat I was pinned to the back wall with about half my health remaining, unable to move for a very long dozen seconds or so until the autopilot switched to retrorockets, at which point I was catapulted forward into the canopy and to my death.

    57:03 I'd suggest looking up the achievements in your own time, just for fun. I really like Outer Wilds' achievements. They're not like other games, in that most of the achievements don't come from some kind of meaningful progression. There's no achievement for finding the Vessel, or for finding the co-ordinates for the Eye of the Universe, or for getting into the Ash Twin Project, or anything like that. There are *some* completionist-style achievements, like fully completing the ship log, but most of them aren't that. Instead, you get achievements for doing stuff that the game gives you no other incentive to do, but that you might just stumble into anyway, and some of them are pretty funny.
    1:14:18 I think the puzzle in the DLC where you have to extinguish candles in the dream tower to turn off the lights in the real world is kind of like the Ash Twin Project puzzle of the DLC. They've made a bunch of changes throughout the DLC's history to try to make the solution more obvious.

    • @LukaelPlays
      @LukaelPlays  Год назад +6

      Yeah I think it's pretty cool when developers find clever uses for the achievements! Some of them just go with very basic stuff that you have no choice running into, but some will use it as another tool to incentivize players to try weird funky stuff, which is nice!

    Regarging your question about gravity:
    - At the center of a spherical planet (as opposed to an ovaloid one, which, yes, it's a thing that can happen if they spin too fast), there is no gravity, because all the parts of the planet pull you from every direction, in a way that cancels out and results in you not being pulled at all
    - Spin gravity isn't really gravity, it's just centrifugal force. When a container rotates, the things inside it try to move with the rotation, which results in them being "pushed away"

    • @LukaelPlays

    As an indie game dev, I agree with your statement there are many ways to design interesting games not based around violence. Come to think of it, the 2 main ideas behind Outer Wilds (rewarding curiosity, and exploring ever-changing worlds) can be found in a few other successful indie games out there (the first that comes to mind is The Eternal Cylinder, if you haven't played it maybe you should!). However, when I watched this documentary for the first time I was expecting more in-depth developer tricks to be revealed. It may look informative to the public, but for game devs you kind of want to hear more, and go really thoroughly into details. There are so many intricate mechanics you simply cannot guess by just playing the game, and there are so many layers of fixes (including the game design documents) that you can only hear about once the devs tell you they exist... I feel like they barely scratched the surface here, and I needed more. I wanted to know the recipe, basically... But it's understandable they wouldn't share it: a part of the creative process is to come up with your own solutions to your own problems, because every game is different.
    EDIT: If you're looking for a new playthrough to watch, right now I'd say @AboutOliver is the hottest. There is so much chaos happening, and the way he thinks fits so well with how the game works. I also noticed a while ago that you have many tattoos, have you considered one about this game? I'm seriously considering my own first tattoo being either the Nomai mask, or the symbol for the Eye of the Universe! And every time I hear the end times theme, I joke about it being the tune I want at my funeral... You never know, it might just work! :D

    • @LukaelPlays
      @LukaelPlays  Год назад +1

      Never heard of Eternal Cylinder until now, looks interesting! I agree about wanting to learn more about the mechanics and development aspects of the game, but I guess they can only fit so much in a 1 hour documentary like this one ahaha you could make a 10 hour documentary about Outer Wilds I'm sure and there would still be more to say! also yeah, I am considering getting an OW tattoo! I kinda wanted to get it before I was done so I could show it off in the finale or something but I didn't get a chance to.... but I will eventually! getting something from OW as your first tattoo would be really cool I think!

      Oh, there is plenty of information the devs have shared, the Noclip doc itself says there is more of the documentary paywalled behind Noclip's patreon - but Kelsey and Alex have both done GDC design talks you can find on the web/youtube on designing a game around curiosity!
      If you refer more to the art & technical side of the game, more recently the technical designers also went on a field trip in a Unity feature going in-depth on how they programmed and made things look the way they do on each of the planets, and on things in the DLC too (they turn the river blood red for fun!!)
      You can find that in pieces on youtube, but I believe there is also a full vod. (The Art of Outer Wilds: Creator Spotlight)

  • @NLitvin
    @NLitvin Год назад +5

    Oh for real? Two Outer Wilds videos in one day? Kinda pog, if I do say so myself.
    4:52 - Someone on reddit asked the devs by email if they were inspired by Le Petit Prince, and they actually responded, they said no and gave this "shortlist of inspirations" (verbatim in this order):
    Games:
    - The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
    - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's mask
    - Myst
    - Antichamber
    Movies:
    - Apollo 13
    - 2001: A Space Oddysey
    5:46 - I appreciate what you're saying about violence being the default interaction in many games of the past decade, you reminded me of this discussion of how playing as a soldier in a war between real-world countries isn't even considered political because war is so needlessly normalized (don't wanna risk posting links): FtCV421T52s
    30:00 - The Hearthians speak whatever language you speak, not necessarily English, i.e. the game is translated to many languages. It makes a little bit of sense if you remember that you're supposed to be one of them, so you should be able to understand them without having to translate in any way. Their writing system is basically scribbles to us, which already stretches the role-playing aspect a bit, but I guess there had to be a compromise between the two extremes. Interesting point!
    40:01 - I think by "not scripted" he means that the pieces fall after being hit and not on a timer, so if you derail a meteor with your ship, that piece of land won't fall in. But it _does_ happen in (almost?) the same pattern every loop if you don't intervene because the random seed for spawning meteors is the same. They did it in this convoluted way because, like they say later in the video, they didn't want to fake anything.
    52:12 - That's a real physics fact that it's 0g inside planets! ::) It's somewhat intuitive: a massive object pulls you towards it, but if there are two equally massive objects on either side of you, neither of them would be able to pull you away from the other. At the center of a planet, there's equal amounts of mass in all directions so it all cancels out. (Edit: ah well, they explain it literally right after you ask; well it's a cool fact so I'm still gonna leave it here!)
    57:49 - In case you got confused about the coordinates thing: games store coordinates as floating point numbers - meaning you have a fixed number of digits but the point can float: e.g. 1.23456 or 1234.56 - you can either store a large number or a precise one, can't have both. So if you're far enough away from spawn, the coords get large enough that you lose precision, suddenly you're only colliding with objects when you're already half-way inside them, or they move in imprecise steps which looks like jitter. They solved this by making you the center point so the stuff around you is always close to 0, 0. The trade-off is that they have to move _everything_ around you, and not just you in an independent space.
    Aww, what a great way to complete the saga, very cozy video ^^_^^ See ya!

    • @LukaelPlays
      @LukaelPlays  Год назад +3

      -I thought about Le Petit Prince too! but guess it's just a coincidence then ahaha I was right about Zelda and 2001 at least!
      -War and violence are definitely super normalized, and I'm not sure that says anything good about us as a people, but that's just how it is I suppose. We don't bat an eye at killing people in games and movies, but other stuff like sex and such is still super taboo even though it's way more natural? makes no sense honestly
      -I guess that's true about the language, for their dialogue at least, but then if I set the game to french, would the little wooden signs in the village also be in french? I'd have to check but I'm guessing not. But yeah, it's an obviously necessary compromise
      -That coordinates stuff is wild, makes my brain hurt just reading about it! I can only admire the genius of people who not only understand this stuff, but work it into a marvel like this game!
      Thanks for following along my OW saga! ::)

    Probably not at all what you had in mind, but Viscera Cleanup Detail jumps to mind as a game where the environmental storytelling is literally what you’re spending the entire time interacting with.
    It’s very much the point that the story being told by the environment isn’t deep or original, but it might be good for a just-for-fun one-shot video or stream, if you’re interested in exploring non-combat games that do something different/interesting.

  • @Jojoschmojo

Then their memories shaped the themes and language of the outer wilds universe.

    Re: "post-apocalyptic exploration games" (which I really want to call archeology games), the trick seems to be having them still be games, and then having the exploration and the gameplay lead to the same conclusion together.
    For a good game with poor exploration, The Witness is a good example. Very interesting and varied puzzles set in an utterly _fascinating_ world... that you don't get to learn anything about. The gameplay does not drive to a deeper understanding of the in-universe lore. Though, the game does bring up a *lot* of interesting philosophy (and if you don't feel like playing the game yourself, I recommend watching Keith Ballard's playthrough).
    For a bad "game" with good exploration/story, I think The Beginner's Guide. There is nothing the player can do except walk and observe (arguably, it's not a "game" because there is no "gameplay"), but the narrator weaves a very compelling emotional story which also serves as a meta-narrative about game design, as well as the audience's relationship with an author.
    For a bad game with bad exploration, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture comes to mind. Again, just walking and observing, but the observations don't clearly lead anywhere compelling.
    For a good game with good exploration, I think I'd say Firewatch (if you turn off the map marker), at which point the gameplay is navigating the world with a real map and compass, and the story is pretty good too, driven by very charming characters.
    Obviously, I think there's something to be gained if either the gameplay or the exploration is good, but (as a player) I find games most satisfying when the gameplay drives the exploration and the ultimate goal is learning some kind of "truth".
    Lastly, I want to recommend a game, but I'm not sure it would make good content for most creators: Heaven's Vault. The game is about being a linguistic archeologist (in a sci-fi setting), piecing together the past by visiting different locations and deciphering a dead language based on context clues. The settings are gorgeous and the worldbuilding is very well done, but there's arguably too much "gameplay", slowly walking around map areas with awkward 2.5D movement, plus the traversal minigame between locations. Either way, I recommend that everyone checks it out.

    1:01:01 the Nomai are not non-verbal, it's just the one Nomai you meet who can't communicate with you verbally. I think you talked over the interviewee when she mentions that the projection stones are interplanetary communication (the different colors are receive vs transmit) and that is why you find the duplicate stones. They link each planet to another and have the same conversation.
    There are a few instances of written lore text (such as the first city under the escape pod on Brittle Hollow) but they are few and far between as to not confuse the reader about important story facts. You also see quite a bit of children communicating this way as sort of a "message board".
    Every time I watch an Outer Wilds playthrough, I think of the Beginner's Guide. Imaging creating such a masterpiece, then following up with a GOTY DLC. How do you even go forward from that?

    Hace you tried Myst games? The all revolve on player gaining knowledge. Specially Riven, which is like a big single puzzle

      Outer Wilds feels like an evolution and refinement of the Myst formula. The game studio that made Myst hasn't yet put out a new game since Outer Wilds came out, but I'm curious to see if they take any influence from it going forward.

      @@LukaelPlays I second the Myst recommendation, specifically the first three games. Although it's one of those game series where, despite how iconic the first one is, the sequel completely dwarfs the scope of the original. Like a Portal vs. Portal 2 kind of comparison, Myst is good but the second game Riven is a true gem. Myst III: Exile is also a great game.
      Cyan has recently announced that they are working on an official remake of Riven, but with no release date given yet. So you may want to wait on that, but if you do it's likely going to be a long time.

      I'm usually really big on coop in games but with Outer Wilds, I don't see much point to it, especially once the game is over I'm not sure what there really is to do in there unfortunately
