    Bill got a lot of respect from me for the sleeping in the stand episode. I used to think yeah give me or anyone else land in Iowa and all the money spent on it and it will be the same results. But if he’s sleeping in the stand, he’s putting the same amount of dedication into literally everything else too and most people aren’t going to do that.

    Bill is the proto-typical guy to the phrase "act like you've been there b4." Humble, professional & not so serious that he can't laugh @ the follies of his past while never dwelling on them. With time things often change & u just can't react to things in a way that's not conducive to your core values. That makes him so good @ seeing value when it's not apparent to many.

    My dad and I hunted 200 acres in Auburn, AL (college town) back in the 80’s (I was just a kid). The owners offered it to him for $25k. He was devastated because my parents didn’t have $25k, and didn’t feel like they could make the payments. He was only making $25k at the time, and they had us 3 kids. Fast forward - back in the early 2000’s that 200ac tract sold for $4.5mil to a developer that built a subdivision on it full of $250k houses. You just never know.

    When reading my comment please keep in mind we can like and respect a human being but not necessarily what they do or represent. First, it's clear that Bill Winke is a good man and one heck of a hunter. He ranks at the very top in his contributions to the expansion of deer hunting and especially to the understanding of whitetail habitat. Bill is a giant in his field and deserves every accolade that comes his way.
    HOWEVER...he as much as anyone else is responsible for the skyrocketing prices of deer hunting properties that have put a once-simple sport/past-time out of reach for untold numbers of hunters. His approach - which focuses heavily on land stewardship and intensive management - has lead directly to a harmful competition among land owners/managers. Deer clubs now spend countless tens of thousands (in many cases MILLIONS) of dollars to attract deer from nearby land tracts to theirs: tractors, implements, ATVs, massive food plots and all the associated expense.
    Perhaps the most corrosive consequence is that of "horn porn." The result - rather than the process - became the emphasis. It's no longer good enough to kill a decent buck. {Forget about a doe}. Generations of hunters are now conditioned to believe the only worthy buck is 140"+. (oh....and the unfortunate preoccupation with "inches" directly corresponds to the changes in deer hunting culture Bill is part of). We no longer "hunt" deer. We FARM them. We artificially manipulate the habitat to bring deer within range and shoot them from carefully selected vantage points in trees and heated box stands, replete with gas stoves and office chairs.
    Bill is as good as they get. But I prefer the methods and philosophies of hunters like Dan Infalt, John Eberhart, and The Hunting Public guys. No need to flame me. My opinions aren't that important, LOL.

    • @jakemitchell1671
      @jakemitchell1671 Год назад +2

      @@erniesantana508 Ernie, where in my post do you find me "hating on success?" Why did you ignore all the positive things I said about Bill? I'll tell you why: Because people focus only on what reinforces their own views. You picked and chose among my comments to build your narrative.
      I'm not "hating" on Bill. I'm pointing out perhaps unintended consequences to a movement he was a large part of. I guess you truly believe opposing viewpoints should stay in the shadows, right? If it's a perspective you don't like, then it should remain unspoken. Well, you're in luck! You live in a time when anything remotely resembling criticism of the expected order is deemed "hate speech." You and people like you want only those views that reinforce your way of thinking. I guess I should apologize for expressing an opposing perspective.
      But I'M NOT.

      @@jakemitchell1671 Sir you do make a good point. These among other such as high fence have changed hunting for the negative. They also make it harder for the average hunter to find land to hunt which in the long term will also be a negative.

    • @erniesantana508
      @erniesantana508 Год назад

      @@jakemitchell1671 a movement he was a large part of is a bit of a stretch. land prices were low yes but that had to do more with low commodity prices during the 80-90. farmers started leasing and they found a good source of income. more success on one farm brought a bidding war. the winners got the farm the losers bitched about how things were terrible. Winke had nothing to do with that. its called market economics my good friend. you pay to play and if you can't go hunt public with your THP friends. this whole thing about blaming people for their success wreaks of a democratic socialism and its Anti American as far as I'm concerned. go out and risk your future work harder than anyone and you'll get yours. gentlemen dint be Jake Mitchell that probably middle aged and things haven't gone his way in life now he a bitter man and can't see the goodness in others succeeding

    • @jakemitchell1671

      @@erniesantana508 WHAT?? LOL! You know NOTHING about me, yet you feel comfortable projecting some image you've literally created in your head! WTH Ernie? I'm not a caricature, dude. "Bitter man?" That's hilarious. I'm a successful business owner of 18 years, having earned a master's degree and am ABD for my PhD, just celebrated 28 years of marriage, father of three kids, two of whom have graduated college and have successful careers, the youngest finishing next year and going to law school. Bitter? LOL! My wall is decorated with the busts of bucks I harvested on public land through hard work and determnation. I resent NO ONE for "success." I just perhaps hold a slightly different view of "success" than you. It's clear you've painted a strawman, and now you'll take empty pot-shots at it. I'm sorry you can't see the value in differing opinions and have to resort to insults and projections looking for solid ground. I'm sure you'll reply. I won't. I've said what I have to say.

    I sure would have been tempted to keep the Southern Iowa farm and move to NE Iowa near your parents. It's what you do for a living, I think your family knows you would spend a lot of time in Southern Iowa during the fall and winter. 2 hour or so drive? It almost seems like there is another reason you sold the Southern Iowa farm that you are not making public. Which would be understandable.
