It sounds great. Congratulations. Big problem I see today is how to train this kind of Mixing if I don’t even access the Worship style multitracks.

Multiband gates help a lot with the tom gating, you can set the frequency bandwidth to cover just the fundamental of the tom that way it'll only open for that. It isn't available on the SSL channel strip, but I'm pretty sure a Digico would have something for side-chaining an EQ'd signal to a gate to do this.
*edit - also, with the new dynamic eq feature you can pull down a normal eq band to get rid of harsh cymbal frequencies before the gate, then have a dynamic eq band that pulls it back up in response to a sidechained signal of the fundamental tom frequency so that the higher freq smack of the skin is still there, but only when the tom gets hit. Hugely increases dynamic range in a very natural way. Maybe overkill, but super cool there's heaps of options now to mitigate bleed!

Unless it's a side chain filter it's also going to wreck the phase of your other drums if you only do it to one channel.

@@thepowerplaceproduction For the multiband gate or dynamic eq?

@@alakovideo anything multi band on a multi mic'd instruments like drums needs to be done to all drums or no drums usually. its adding crossover points and rotating the phase a bunch. Not that you can't...if you cut out all the bleed in post then it's less of an issue. I try to stay away from multi band. Dynamic eq is fine!

The sources of sound have to sound good, what you do on the board is just icing on the cake.

Absolutly! That makes the biggest difference. For me, i can't always control what i'm being sent, so this process has helped me have a starting point to go from.

What does the drummer think of this sound? Why so many plug-ins and gates and compressors? Kick and snare sound very dead with all the processing. Maybe not the sound the drummer was trying to get.

They do sound pretty dead to me, I did this really quick and on the fly (no idea what the tracks sounded like) on some headphones that sounded weird. I'm not trying to show you how to get this sound, just the general concepts of processing and showfile layout to have a fast starting point. Thanks for checking us out!

some people are so rude. He is teaching this for free and then you come up with this comment and some people will pay to get taught on what he is teaching in this video. So just appreaciate.

It depends on what the purpose of the mix is.
I clicked on the thumbnail, expecting this to be a monitor mix, in which case it does sound rather disorienting to the drummer and to the band.
Then I read the title, it does specify that this is a “broadcast” mix, then I would say it is actually quite suitable for this genre.
That being said, I feel like this kind of sound is rather specific to the song being mixed, if the band is playing the same style throughout the entire programme, then it’s fine; the mix might not be generic enough if the songs are of different varieties. In that sense I would agree that the sound is a bit over processed.

My man why you clipping the hell out of the master bus

That desk shows clipping before actual clipping. It’s annoying. The broadcast feed is what is metering and it has an L2
set to -1.0. Always shows red on the desk around -4 but it’s fine. I guess they think it’s to warn you. To me it makes it useless. It also reads -18 as -20. It’s weird! I don’t recommend clipping your converters haha

Sound is ohne thing, But left a Bit Dynamic in there, assuming the Peak Meter, That does Not Happening 😂

When the FOH mix is getting used for Broadcast it's a trade off. I'm always surprised how much dynamics you can get away with live. When it's getting compressed and sent to an iPhone it's gotta be slammed. The good news is that when it's compressed like this you can get a really low SPL mix that sound full. 89-92db and for church that's awesome cause you can hear people singing as loud as the band, so crowd mics sound great!

I guess people are just used to better mixes now so we have to keep up. Keeps me learning! Especially with broadcast coming off the console these days. It has to be a good mix on the desk first before the room or your fired haha
