I lost my Husband of 33 years in March, and oh how I've wondered; 'What if we'd gotten to the Hospital sooner?' -It made me feel slightly less devastated when he spoke of those infinite others that are the same!
I've been around this subject of infinity and the multiverses (local or temporal). The concept that everything that may happen happens an infinite amount of times through infinity isn't new for me. That been said... One and an half year ago, my 8 months old daughter choke with a piece of toy. When she was turning blue and passing out I did what was like impossible, I grabbed it with the tip of my fingers through her tiny mouth and throat and pulled it out. I hurt her so much that my wife and I had to take her to the hospital right after. My baby took a week to fully recover. But something was off. When everything was in the balance, I felt like chance did it. It was highly improbable. It just happened independent of anything. I had many nightmares after that of me living my life after this event gone wrong. I even had a nightmare about a funeral, and that frightened me the most. It's like that in many other probable universes the outcome was definitively bad. How lucky am I to exist in one of many universes where I can see my daughter grow up? So in this infinite fractal of chaos, I'm the luckiest man there is. :) Be grateful for what you have, an infinite many others of you may didn't get that chance.
@@marcelosinicoIgnore that weirdo - It's totally normal and expected to have horrible nightmares after a traumatic event like that, so don't overthink it. I'm sorry you had to go through that, but your daughter will be able to tell the story of how her dad saved her for many years to come.

I love how this channel always leaves me with more question than answers, the shape of the universe could be something we never understand and it's nice to have some mystery left, I've always thought of it as a spherical, if the universe was born from the big bang and we use points of references we can visualize from things here on earth like nuclear explosions then my small mind would expect that the same governing laws of physics to in turn relate itself to the shape of the universe going outward in all directions and then I watch something like this and I'm back to square one having no actual clue about whats going on and being snapped back to reality of bills work and life, I thank you for your channel and the respite I get from the daily grind, even if I may never understand it all, the daydreams I engage in afterwards are a little piece of happy you bring me with each video, keep up the great work!

"Even the smallest acts of kindness carry an infinite weight". Thank you for ending this amazing odyssey of cosmic introspection with these profound words of wisdom.
From looking through a 29 inch reflector telescope in 1984 and seeing the veil nebula for the first time, I’ve always wondered whether or not the universe is infinite. Infinity of space holds my interest more than anything else.
Is the universe all the matter that exists, or the space that the matter exists in? If it is the former, and the galaxies and nebulae are moving away from each other, maybe it is the outward motion or expansion of matter that is infinite. Space then is absolutely nothing and the 'universe' only exists as long as matter itself exists.
I was kind of feeling low but after watching this I realise the choices are truly infinite with a lot of possibilities, and it improved my mood a lot.. It was a great video thanks ❤.
Can someone explain to me how traveling through a 3d mobius universe to return home would reorient your particles from left to right? That doesn't make sense to me. In the 2d example the crab should be flipped over on the other side of the strip, but its claw would still be on the same side (its chirality would be unchanged).
@@thediamonddust It' might be correct, I'm just not able to imagine how traveling through a 3d mobius "strip" would reorient my body to the opposite chirality. It might just be one of those mathematical truths that you can't really visualize but is nevertheless the case.
Dude when i was tripping balls on mushrooms a few months ago, i closed my eyes and saw the connections through cosmos, and how everyone was linked through cosmic energy. I could see myself whooshing through the galaxies and stars, 500 times the speed of light, just shooting past everything like in hyperdrive. It was only short, while i closed my eyes, but it gave me such a immense appreciation for the scale of the universe, and how every human on earth, and all other life forms in the universe are linked, in some way. It was cool man. The universe is awesome.
You have no idea how this video and the journey to the end of the universe have impacted my soul and my mind. I am an astronomy buff since the age of 10. My 8 year old son put your videos on our TV. We barely watch TV.
well, that's better than screening your crack. i think. the universe isn't a 2 dimensional flat plane no more than the earth is flat. that's the silliest thing i ever heard. we can observe this fact. regardless of what side of the earth we're on, or side of the sun we're on, we can see the universe in ALL directions. nor is the universe infinite. nor is the universe a UNI-verse. in fact the universe is so un-flat there's an infinite number of dimensions we can't even experience much less observe. so this universe of ours goes off into more directions than we can even begin to comprehend. the universe does indeed curve back on itself. NOTHING IS INFINITE. if nothing in the universe is infinite why would the universe, itself, be infinite? its neither infinite in space or in time. it has a physical, undetectable boundary and a time limit as well. if you ever reach the "edge" of space your instruments will show you continuing in a straight line but you'll actually be curving back into the universe. and no one's mentioning the physical impact our multi-verse has on other universes. just because we can't see these universes doesn't mean they don't have a physical effect on each other. i have spoken. i am legend. i am my own god! so there.
@Cool Worlds great video. As a theologian, in my youth. I often, and still to this day wondered, "Is the universe just an infinite fractile per say. To put my thesis in layman terms, "If the earth was a blood cell, measuring my body from within. Would my growth from an infant, to an old man, be relative to scientists on earth, observing the expansion of the universe?
not sure how I landed on one of your videos but I am hooked. if more educators in the sciences were as impressionable as you, We'd see a wave of new generation scientists. Thank you!
Your comment reminds me on the following quote, despite i am not agreeing with the statement below, but i remembered it, while reading your comment: "The aim of science is to make difficult things understandable in a simpler way; the aim of poetry is to state simple things in an incomprehensible way. The two are incompatible." - Paul Dirac.
Very interesting. The conjectures on infinity reminded me of Jorge Luis Borges' short story "La Biblioteca ds Babel" (The Library of Babel), where every book, every story that could possibly have been written, is to be found.
Absolutely mesmerizing. If you have kids, you should absolutely raise them with this voice at bedtime; if no kids, please share these stories, in this voice, widely and generously.
Also have been believing this theory more and more as I get older.. some of these dreams I remember because I need to and others fade away because they don’t want me to find out something just yet. Also I believe that when you have deja vu, that’s another “you” dreaming in an alternate universe but is dreaming through the eyes of your wake state.
Well... if the universe really was infinite there will inevitably be an exact copy of your dream happening somewhere out there on a planet exactly like on your dream
We are insignificant byproducts of this incomprehensible thing we call the universe. We exist now, but crazy to think trillions of years will pass after our deaths.
@@aljohnson3717 It makes me think that if everything I do will never matter in the end, makes me think everything we do from every breath of air we take matters all the more.

Your videos blow my mind on a level which frightens but yet absolutely thrills me. They keep me grounded from the insanity of this world that threatens to depress me on a daily basis. Thank you for these informative and beautifully produced and easily understood videos.
What if there were other universes that collided with ours, creating a larger, combined universe, but that collision happened outside of our observable universe?
If the inflation theory is correct, the multiverse itself expands at such a breakneck speed that collisions between universes are impossible except for the very first moment of their formation. In the multiverse, the inflaton field never broke down so it doubles in size at least 90-fold in 10^(-32) seconds of our time. No universe that contains anything could expand or move so fast, i. e. the multiverse constantly tears apart all the "daughter" universes much faster than they could grow or move. In fact, there's a theory according to which the "big void" observable in our patch of the universe, a vast region of low temperature in the CMB, which amounts to an enormous area of empty space without galaxies in the mature universe, is the result of two universes born virtually together like two bubbles of foam glued together in a hot bath tub, but then rapidly separating.

Admittedly, I'm at a place in my life where I'm very susceptible to emotional things, but either way, this was a very moving video, especially the way you concluded it. I couldn't agree more about finding meaning close to home, in the world and people around you.
You are like the Carl Sagan of RUclips era...
Man the way you present this blows my mind
My father recently past away and never gave me the time of the day. I made numerous vain attempts to be his son but it wasn’t possible. Because of messages like the one at the end, I made a conscious decision, a resolution to recast my whole life many years ago into the man I though I couldn’t be and I am at peace with the results. Father, my greatest hope is that in another life, another universe, you are my father and me your son .
He loves you so much.. remember he had a life before you he was a kid too once were all human and he went thru things that made him who he was. No one is perfect.
I feel with you. Multiverse gives comfort 😊
My thoughts go out to you, your comment gave me chills.
Wow! "Father, my greatest hope is that in another life, another universe, you are my father and me your son" Man that is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Mad respect for getting that far!
You’re such a whiny annoying needy person, I understand your dad wanting to avoid you
I love how well thought out and executed every video on this channel is. This is quality content. What a great ending to a great video. Well done, as always.
I forget the exact quote or who said it, but it goes along the lines of: "True art forces the mind into unique and unexpected directions."
By that definition, what you have created with this video is one of the purest pieces of art I've yet to experience. Simultaneously hopeful, wonderous, nihilistic, and distinctly unsettling, all at the same time.
I knew there was a reason I loved this channel…… top deep stuff, not just scientific, but mind boggling and very very thought provoking.
I'm so glad I found this channel. Every video is packed with so much information and provoking thoughts that I can watch the same video several times and each time I would discover new things and have another epiphany.
not since Sagan have I been so impressed and moved. the combination of science, compassion, and metaphysics you exhibited is profound. I saw you in several TV shows. I had no idea you were capable of this! what a discovery. thank you so much. I'll be on the lookout from now on.
Me too❤️
I agree. Professor Kipping is the next Carl Sagan, so thought provoking.
"Humanity has had to swallow another great demotion". This statement is an idea that everyone needs to be comfortable thinking about and understanding. Deeply profound, thank you for putting the idea into these words. Subscribed.
A delicate balance between that concept and not falling into nihilism.
Just sitting in a chair in front of a camera , how beautifully you have dissected a complex topic in a way comprehensible by all . The last 5 mins where he brought in a philosophical perspective is superb . One of the best videos I have seen .
I lost my Husband of 33 years in March, and oh how I've wondered; 'What if we'd gotten to the Hospital sooner?' -It made me feel slightly less devastated when he spoke of those infinite others that are the same!
Peace
I hope you see your husband again 😌

Be grateful for what you have, an infinite many others of you may didn't get that chance.
That is a fallacy
@@roseroselyne9045 Care to elaborate?
@@marcelosinicoIgnore that weirdo - It's totally normal and expected to have horrible nightmares after a traumatic event like that, so don't overthink it. I'm sorry you had to go through that, but your daughter will be able to tell the story of how her dad saved her for many years to come.
That’s really impressive. I’m glad your daughter is okay👍
I slept while listening to this and had one of the most bizarre dreams. I felt like I was actualizing everything he was saying. As if I was there experiencing everything he was saying
Coolworlds I subscribed to your channel a couple of weeks ago and I have been watching almost your entire library of videos, they are absolutely amazing, space is a fascinating subject that I've been interested in but thought myself to thick to understand it all, your videos have made it easier to help me understand it better, please never stop you are such an inspiration. Thank you.
This gave me goose bumps and made the hairs on my arms stand up. Prof Kipping your communication skills are right up there with Sagan.
This was absolutely beautiful, especially the philosophical pondering at the end @CoolWorlds. AND love your calm and soothing voice.
I always love your videos. The way you consider all possibilities and are very scientific without bias as to how you reach your conclusions never ceases to impress me.
I do not recommend many videos, but this video will be a must view to the people I know. So well done. Thank you
I love how this channel always leaves me with more question than answers, the shape of the universe could be something we never understand and it's nice to have some mystery left, I've always thought of it as a spherical, if the universe was born from the big bang and we use points of references we can visualize from things here on earth like nuclear explosions then my small mind would expect that the same governing laws of physics to in turn relate itself to the shape of the universe going outward in all directions and then I watch something like this and I'm back to square one having no actual clue about whats going on and being snapped back to reality of bills work and life, I thank you for your channel and the respite I get from the daily grind, even if I may never understand it all, the daydreams I engage in afterwards are a little piece of happy you bring me with each video, keep up the great work!
This video, which I watched for the third time, illustrates that a branch of our knowledge which is complex and difficult, is actually far complexer and difficulter than I had imagined.
Just brilliant. Thank you for those beautiful thoughts.
Professor Kipping, this may be my 10th or 12th time through this one. You guys have so many that are that good. Ever since I've been a little under the weather I'm spending a lot more time talking to my cat and watching these videos. So thanks for helping me heal.
No words to describe how profound this video is to me. Very well done!
I've seen most of the videos on this channel but this one made me subscribe. Thank you for being awesome and for sharing your work with us.
I love the clips of various movies and animations you showed. They complemented your essay superbly. Thanks for the content!
The thought that my parents could still exist in an alternate universe brings me to tears.
Great video. This and The Exoplanets Channel are the *_best_* channels on RUclips.
Agreed! Event horizon is a really good channel too.

I think this may now be my top favourite video in this wonderful channel. Thank you.
Watching this again after two years. Dr Kippings videos have excellent replay value. Always understand things better if you watch a couple times.
incredible philosophical and emotional work that deserves an award.

@@stevenbrooks3573hmmmmm, good POV
I believe the astronomers/scientists say it"s +/- 13 Billion light years...Who knows if it has a end point or is infinite.
I mean our minds literally can't comprehend infinity.
If the universe isnt infinite what's there gonna be a wall you can't cross at some point?
@@nickhayden2299no
I was kind of feeling low but after watching this I realise the choices are truly infinite with a lot of possibilities, and it improved my mood a lot.. It was a great video thanks ❤.
It’s most likely that way but not confirmed.
Can someone explain to me how traveling through a 3d mobius universe to return home would reorient your particles from left to right? That doesn't make sense to me. In the 2d example the crab should be flipped over on the other side of the strip, but its claw would still be on the same side (its chirality would be unchanged).
Yeah, load of BS that part.
@@thediamonddust It' might be correct, I'm just not able to imagine how traveling through a 3d mobius "strip" would reorient my body to the opposite chirality. It might just be one of those mathematical truths that you can't really visualize but is nevertheless the case.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 This. It is something you cannot visualize because you just can't. Your mind isn't able to process it.

In some universe your screen is fine.
@@n4me1e55-W lmao 😂
well, that's better than screening your crack. i think.
the universe isn't a 2 dimensional flat plane no more than the earth is flat. that's the silliest thing i ever heard. we can observe this fact. regardless of what side of the earth we're on, or side of the sun we're on, we can see the universe in ALL directions. nor is the universe infinite. nor is the universe a UNI-verse.
in fact the universe is so un-flat there's an infinite number of dimensions we can't even experience much less observe. so this universe of ours goes off into more directions than we can even begin to comprehend.
the universe does indeed curve back on itself.

Bro is a poet

This channel is cranking out world-class science videos as if it's nothing. You guys are incredible!
This is existential poetry. Very, very well done.
Imagine every dream you've ever had was actually a view of something that actually existed and was happening in another universe.
That would be scary for the other universe because I have nightmares sometimes.
Infinite universe (s) or not, goodness matters.

All I know is that that mic is the biggest in all of the universe. Good lord
No just in the observable universe
