- 2017 Mutt Mongrel Review - This video is my review of the brilliantly retro-styled Mutt Mongrel, a bike assembled in Birmingham UK out of predominantly Chinese parts and sold at a brilliant price - it also sounds the mutts! If you like retro could this be all the bike you need? Stay tuned to find out...

Picked one up as a learner a couple of weeks back. Enjoying it... Everyone told me don't go too fancy on the first bike, I will drop it etc. But this little thing is so nice to go out on, it makes me want to learn and go out on it. Looks cool standing next to all the grown up bikes. Happy with purchase only under 200km so far... It is noisy, sounds great, but it isn't one for the meek. I make a right rumble, everyone turning to watch me stall. :)
+doktored Great that you're enjoying her, I'm very tempted I must say....thanks for stopping by - TMF
Benny and the boys are building great bikes. Wishing them every continued success.
Thanks TMF.
I'll second that!
This one video alone made me buy a Mutt. I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve watched your video, it’s superb! Very honest, informative and accurate. After looking at many of their bikes as a result of your video I’ve gone for a 2022 euro5 Mutt FSR. I’m not a tall guy at 5’ 8” so the FSR happened to suit me for size better than any other model, but they’re all good to be fair. Thank you for such a great review, very much appreciated!
Glad it helped!
I've been a fan of the Mutt for a while now, as the marque grew out of the ashes of the righteous Boneshaker Choppers and the mind of the proprietor and custom scene stalwart, Benny Thomas. Great to see you do a positive review, I'd certainly be tempted by a 500 when they eventually break surface.
Yes looking forward to seeing that too....cheers Peter - TMF
Great review, I love the whole concept of Mutt Motorcycles.
Great vid and nice bike...As a 50 year old, who is gearing to do his full bike license, I might contemplate getting one of these until I do the full test...Thanks...
This is a "Mash Seventy Five" bike with a different handlebar, re-trimmed seat and different exhaust. I own one. The engines are indeed 125 suzuki so reliable. The carb is a Mikuni replica.
Virtually the same as my little sinnis retrostar. Great little bikes, mine happily sits at 55/60 on the dual carriageway for 23 miles going to work.
Missenden Flyer-thanks for the review of the Mutt Mongrel 125. I'm actually thinking of buying one here in Australia as a second bike and you've answered most of my questions. We only have the 250cc version which tops out at 80mph, so it has a little more power.
Brill - as a 250cc this would be fabulous!!
Just picked up my mongrel 125 few days ago, really great machine and feels like a brilliant bike for me to learn on for the next year or so before I progress.
Cool and congratulations!
Well I think I just found my first bike when I get my licence!! Love the look of it! Great review as per usual!! Great stuff!
I think you could get your licence on one of these.....
Me too
A really good review thanks. Thinking of a lightweight 125 for back lanes and have checked out the Mutt website after viewing this.
I really like the bobber style of it. Seems very stylish and simple. Nice review, as always :)
+Tore B Thank you Tore B
Thanks for the review of this bike. I have just purchased one as my first bike and I have watched this review probably about 20 times.
I really love it and it is very easy to ride. It sounds brillant and looks fab. I now need to watch your cleaning videos... ha ha. Subbed. :)
Great! Welcome along...what kept you! ;0)
Best thing about this bike is the exhaust. Sounds lovely for such a small engine.
Yes for very short time, no disrespect but this bike is the worse thing that UK has came up with, total disappointment and very very cheap parts
That's a fantastic looking little machine. I really like the look of their S-54 in particular. I'd be well up for one of those for my work commute.
Yeah, they look great don't they...sound pretty brill too!
Looks like the 1950s/60s Tiger Terrier/Cub. I actually think Triumph should be producing a model in this category. Lightweight commuter with bags of caché (or 'cool' if you prefer).
I second that completely!
Yeah, I reckon it would sell like hot cakes - but I bet they couldn't make it sub £3K!
Len Scapoff It makes sense, totally. Imagine, arriving at work on a basic commuter bike, built by Triumph! How cool is that!! :-)
Great to see a review of an entry level bike, getting people interested, nice looking retro once again balanced and informative will keep an eye out for the next "mutt" hopefully with a few more teeth.
Definitely sub £6-7k
Guess what I just brought 1 about I love it and it's pretty awesome to ride I think.
I've just bought the Fat Sabbath - my first bike until I pass my full A license - it's a damn good bike! Lots of research before choosing it. Bit soft on suspension at factory setting for a big lad like me, but totally comfy to ride!
Cool looking too!
Looking at this as a replacement for my unfortunately written off terrain. It sounds amazing for a stock 125
Love older looking bikes and I'm about to take my cbt soon , this looks like it could be my bike 🔥
Yes great bike as your first “big bike” - I’d get some time on a 125 once you’ve done your CBT first though.
I get mine this saturday! Cant wait. Believe I'm getting the updated 2017 edition which comes with a few more modern features
Ooh congratulations, let me know how you get on? I'm quite tempted I must say....
Nice to put Birmingham on the map for motorcycle building again , very eye catching little bike ,basic spec , all part of the cool appeal sounds good too,
Yes indeed, sounds brill doesn't it....
Having passed my CBT, I think his will suit me perfectly.
I must admit I’ve only stumbled on Mutt Motorcycles recently.
I saw them at the excel show in February 2018. Particularly loved the look of the Fat Sabbath!!
Before I go for my Direct Access I want to get some miles down.
As I said this looks like model for me.
Finally a manufacturer that has made a 125cc feel and look bigger than it is.
Great review as always!!😉
Maybe you could take the Sabbath out ??
Cheers Kevin - yes a super cool bike, they sound amazing too. Good luck with your test! - TMF
I’ve got this bike I just passed can confirm it’s perfect
If honda can still turn out 125 Cubs, RE or Triumph should be building these.
I'll be looking at financing one of these in the next month fantastic bikes!
I'm going to be taking my test this year and strongly considering this bike, I've always wanted a Triumph or a Royal Enfield but Mutt seems like it'll do the job just as well ;)
...all good choices...
One day I'm going to buy this bike from Birmingham and ride it all the way to Coventry just like Ewan McGregor and Charlie boreman . Grandad would be proud of me.
Good luck mate
Haha Brum to Coventry, make sure you back a light lunch for that expedition sir, and watch out for the Russian Mafia on the A4.
They do one called the Hilts. A tribute to the king of cool Steve Mcqueen and the Great escape. Looks great. 👍
Well done, nice review and as a writer for a motorbike magazine (won't say which one) extremely useful.
Wow, thank you Jane....
I just bought one of these a week ago. Great little bike. Sounds fantastic in real life. Good reviews and info TMF, subscribed 👍
Welcome along!
Looking to get a 125 stuck between bullit hero n mutt
@@krisoneill8587 the Hero is nice but I'd go for the Mutt 😉
@@meltedMatt1 thanks my friend bought one , comes on Friday thanks :)
@@krisoneill8587 Good man 👍 I'm on the owners group on Facebook (Mutt Motorcycle Owners). Join it and post a pic up when you get the bike. It's a great group, lots of ideas, info and pics of other Mutts on it. See ya there and health to ride 🏍😁
Did my cbt Monday and ordered this 2 week ago. Just waiting for a phone call. Going to take thus to Manchester and Wales from Kent end of July hopefully.
How's the bike been ?
@@lopeks9831 couldn't tell you I'm afraid. 1 week after it should of been delivered they still couldn't tell me when it would arrive. It still hadn't reached mutt to be assembled and then to the dealer I'd ordered from. Ended up getting a sinnis terrain which has been great. Passed my mod1 last week. Mod 2 on Wednesday so going bigger next week.
Love your reviews. Can you try and do one on the bullit spirit 125cc too? Thanks!
Just happened upon these little bikes they look pretty pretty cool and for what they are they seem good value for mony
It makes such a lovely sound!
Doesn't it! :0)
fantastic little bike for sure, they have them at my local bike shop...gotta admit it made my head turn and made me wonder back over towards it!
Great fun machine, can't argue with the VFM!
Cracking little bike TMF and another great review.
Thank you TNP!
Love your videos so keep them coming 👌👍
+jamie goodridge Thank you Jamie - will do!
Just bought one of these, really hard to get hold of and are selling like hot cakes! Collecting next Saturday, really surprised at the size of this bike for a 125. Looks stunning in the flesh!
Exciting times - enjoy!
Definitely been considering getting the limited edition super 6 model at my local dealership
I love the styling. I hope these take off.
Yeah me too :0)
saw them at MCN show in London last week. Fantastic bikes. engine a copy if my old Suzuki GN125. The bigger engined bikes planned sound great. Good luck to them.
I'll second that!
How do you rate this compared to the bullit spirit 125 ?
Hello from Ireland love your channel one of the best around
Thank you Dylan!
I have a mutt mongrel, and I absolutely love it. :D Such a fun ride
+Stuart Knox Great stuff Stuart, how long have you had it and have you had any issues at all?
TheMissendenFlyer the only issue I have had is the speedo cable snapped. Done about 2000 miles on it now and ride it to work nearly everyday.
Well that doesn't sound too bad then! Good stuff...TMF
Would be great if you could review the Mutt 250 bikes?
I had one of these, I miss it so much
i have an archive 125 cc and its basically the same and damn its sweet to ride and yeah i have a pallion on it half of the time with bags and everything and still work amazing dont be scaried about it being a 125cc if scooter can a pavillion and bags a 125cc bike can absolutely do it. i have done it and never had problem
Great bike. I love it as my daily commute and for blasting about as an alternative to my bigger bikes. I probably get more nods and questions when I'm on this than I do on a custom Harley. And for less than 3 grand - can't fault the thing. Some really reputable dealers doing them now so that must be saying something good about them.
Agreed - How long have you had her Simon?? Any issues at all??
Since last spring. No issues other than me dropping it and breaking a lever etc, mailed Mutt, parts came quickly. Ridden it through the winter coated in ACF50, no problems. Clean it, service it and it seems to be pretty bomb proof. I've had more issues with a £17k Ducati in less miles..
Good to know! Thanks for the reply.....
simon I'll be havin' one in January!
Get mine next week, can't wait!
Congratulations!
What 125cc do you recommend
Good Video and a Nice Starter Bike for somebody Another Good Review Thank You Take Care.
Cheers Wayne..
Been waitingfor one of these
+T Gr Yes, cool little machines eh?
I've been watching them for a few years now. Benny at Boneshakers Choppers sets them up. They did produce a 250cc version in limited numbers. The one you rode has a Suzuki GN125cc engine, no wonder it could only do 50 mph with the choke out. Lol
I do prefer the Herald Rambler at the moment, 250cc and £3500 plus OTR costs.
I will wait and see what Mutt do re - 250cc and 500cc.
The Hanway Scrambler 125cc is a nice looking cheap classic style @ £2300 + OTR also.
..yeah it's good to have all these choices at the lower price end of the scale too...
Fantastic videos TMF! Really great reviews and also enjoy your scran videos too! I'm interested to find out what your number 1 favourite 125cc bike is, or a top 3. Perhaps you could upload a video where you recommend in order the best bikes for learners to buy (unless you have done something similar already and I just haven't come across the video yet).
Thanks for the idea!
I'd be interested even more if they did an XT600 engine based version...
To the contrary, Almost perfect day for bike reviews.
If it's going to clap out it's more likely to do it in the wet.
I'd rather see a bike that can handle some water than one that only runs right in deserts.
Thanks for the video!
Fair point! Thanks for watching...TMF
Due to do my cbt soon. For a learner would you recommend this compared to a Vespa still 125? I think the Vespa probably is a better quality bike, but I prefer the look of the mongrel
The mongrel would be brilliant as a first bike - super cool too...
i have never ever heared of this brand... that bike looks awesome... a bit like the rninet 😉
i like it
great review 👍
cheers Tom
thanks Tom...
Great bike. You should check out the Orcal Astor. Much prettier. Very high quality.
So of the 2 bikes you reviewed, the mondial and the Mongrel, which would you chose to ride each day? They are roughly the same cost. Cheers j
Well if it were my money I'd by the Mongrel as the old school scrambler look appeals to me, if I had to ride it every day then probably the Mondial as it was just a little bit more refined....
I've watched this review countless times. Quite fancy another puddle jumper and can't decide between one of these and the Mondial HPS. Which did you think was better?
Mondial felt a bit more refined....
I would like to know the overall build and engine's quality because there is another brand named Brixton uses the same engine which is made in China based on suzuki's design (which is the same situation here). Do you have any issues by time using it?
Well I don't own one so I cannot personally vouch for longevity but see no reason why it shouldn't last - especially given the guarantee...I've not heard any bad reports about the engine, only good ones...
Absolutely love these bikes in the 250cc version. Cool summer fun without losing your licence
Exactly. just a no nonsense honest fun bike - looks super cool too....
Any possibility to launch in India?
There's a company with a similar setup (import from China, then British parts and oil upgrade) in Cambridgeshire, called Herald. They do 125cc and 250cc versions in the same style. Plus, they offer a variety of customization options (seat, indicators, etc.).
I spoke to one of the main bike engineers on their stand at the 2017 MCN Motorcycle show; they said their 400cc version is due to be released at the end of the year. (It's meant to be Euro4-compliant as well, meaning ABS, appropriate emissions, etc.) Exciting times!
Yes I saw them at the London show yesterday, my understanding is though they import completed bikes and then change some choice parts (plugs, oil, etc) - where as Mutt I believe buy in key parts and do the complete assembly here....which for some reason I prefer the sound of!
Good to know! Thanks for the update. And sorry, I forgot to mention: great review! :)
i live in Australia and i'm just wondering if you can get one from a dealership.
+Casey Trewick Dunno, but somehow I doubt it...
Looks so good.
New Imperial first 250 to top 100mph hope they follow in their foot steps.
Well I'm sold. This is going to be my first bike to step onto the bike scene with.
Cool!
what was the top speed you managed to get out of it? did it do well on 0 to 60? sorry, I went in to a dealership today to take a look and want to get one.
Well it's a 125 so they're not going to win any races - 0-60 was fine, would probably lose most cars from the lights if you thrashed it but speed merchant it is not - just a fun pose bike/commuter I think (I love 'em!)
Back to basics, cheap as chips, great commuter bike. great video,
Thanks Peter...
In terms of a 125cc bike, i would hardly call it cheap. its one of the most expensive in the class
Nice!! Been looking at one of these for the Wife to do her CBT on.
Great choice, non intimidating, fun and cool!
would the exhaust on these mutt mongrels fit a herald classic125? I just got back into motorcycling and bought one of these herald classic 125's but the exhaust has seen better day.
I dunno - sorry!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks anyway.
Hi, nice review I'm thinking on buying one, the only problem I see is the light on the speed meter it's poor (sorry English is not my main language) Keep up the good work.
+darksidebidi Your English is great - certainly no need to apologise for that darksidebidi! Thanks for the kind words - TMF
Does it have a kickstart as well? Do Mutt make 250s? There actually is no website link in description
They have a 250 and the one I have doesn't have a kick start
When will Brixton bikes come In India ?
What a great, funky looking 125cc, I had. Suzuki Van Van, this looks really good fun. Sounds ok too!
Yeah this sounded amazing, reminded me of the VanVan in a funny sort of way - great fun...
Any chance you could do a ride+review of a SWM ? Don't see much about them but they look great
err, dunno.....
It seems that it would compare favorably to a grom (8.6) HP to 12 HP, and a little cheaper I think. Looks fun to scoot around town.
+rmteflonpenguin Yes, this is cooler looking surely!
Never heard of them - very cool little bike!!
Isn't it just!
Loving the 125 Videos! Is this the Euro 4 Compliant fuel injected model or the carbureted model? Is there a difference in sound between the two?
This was the carbureted model...not sure if it makes a difference to sound to be honest....
There won't be no difference to sound. Just better fuelling at low rpms and more reliable on cold starts. Fuel injection fires on the button where as carb a slight twist of the throttle
I LOVE it ! Makes me wish I wasn't 6'3". Why are all the best looking bikes too small for me? Oh well, I here you shrink with age. Maybe when I'm 104... Can't wait !!
I know you kept it for a short while however would you reckon these bikes would stay reliable for 10+yrs with good maintenance? Just worried as it's Chinese based.
Dunno about 10 years but 2 or 3 no issues...
is that church you are filming the bike near the one in many different shows? Like Greenwing
...quite possibly, there are a lot of big film studios in that area...
cool! ^-^
What camera are you using to record the video?
GoPro hero 4
should i get this or hanway scrambler 125
Whatever you like the look of most!
I'm thinking about buying one of these but I've never used a manual bike before, should I get it and practice in a car park or something or wait?
Wait for what? Getting lessons with a motorcycle school is the way to go!
Did you get one, they are great bikes and really easy to ride
What!? I though u not covering any smaller motorcycles review! Any chance for FB Mondial Pagani? 🏍👀
Mr Flyer, you enriched my life! :-)
Good!
Hi TMF, Great videos and you are an absolute treat to watch. Now the wife and kids are complaining i am spending too much time on your vids. :) . Loved your Arctic tour. Btw, As a newcomer to motorcycling world, maybe I m hitting that midlife crisis. Do you think this 125 will suit/comfortable enough for a 20mile each way from Dartford to London Commute? Seriously looking out for a comfortable commuter. Looking at Sinnis scrambler, Mutt Mongrel, Sinnis Terrain, Lexmoto Michigan or Valiant. Will be taking non-motorway route though.
Yeah, I reckon it'd be perfect for that....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks and much appreciate you taking time to respond.
Went to there warehouse come factory today
Great place with a cafe shop and lots of retro clothing
all mutts on show too
if your in Bham well worth a visit
Bikes look great the guy was saying there going to be doing 250 cc 400 500 soon
would be good if you could do one of your reviews on the larger cc
when they come out
also didn't know the actor Tom Hardy owns one
keep up the good reviews
I must make a point of visiting next time I'm in Brum! Thanks for that....
Are you going to review the mutt imperial 400
If I am able to (when available) then yes I would love too....
Cool vid, Aldenham/radlett, have a restaurant there 😀
Looking forward to seeing you ride the 500 trailie style......... when it appears ?
Yes I'd love a go on one!
It looks like a baby version of my triumph. I bet this thing is a lot of fun on a country road
Saw Mutts at the MCN Show, but did you also see the Herald stand? Similar bikes, but some really impressive 'upgrades' on the Mutts (fuel injection, rear disc brake, upside down forks, one had a nice scrambler style side exhaust), and all for less than the Mutts.
I did see them but didn't look closely - my understanding is that Herald buy the complete bike in and replace parts, rather than build the bike themselves (not that that necessarily makes much odds)....will check 'em out! Wonder if they offer a similar 2 year parts and labour guarantee?
For Herald see Sinnis/Bullit/Mash - same bikes out of a crate with a different badge. Does changing a spark plug make a 'custom' bike?
I think Herald were getting Mutt to design a few things for them and now trying to copy them. If you saw some of the 'custom' Heralds at the NEC show you'd know they are pretty clueless.
are the gears 1 down 4 up or just 5 up?
1 down 4 up
if you get a go on a Sinnis 250 .would love to know your thoughts ..have just got one.so am a bit biased.from a OAP, in sussex
Nice one Tony - thanks for watching and for stopping by...TMF
thank's shall keep watching,it's nice to see an unbiased opinion all bike and scooters.THANKs
Great review as always TMF; and it's not bad bike....but have you seen the new Fantic Caballero 500? My piggy bank's got a worried look on its face! 😂
No I haven't - although I note there are a number of these smaller "custom" manufacturers out there....will check 'em out...
What a great bike, fantastic name too :-)
Yeah agreed!
